Please I am not having a go at anybody but just raising a point. Surely the posts that pop up about people giving out on forums are doing exactly just what they are giving out about ?
Not really, but they can, and often do, lead to prolonged and polarised arguments.
You could call it arm chair mods. Nobody is forcing you to read it. When I find a thread I don't like I simply don't look at it end of story. I don't understand why you would stick up a long post about how this forum is being dragged down when all you have to do is move on.
That works fine as a theoretical concept, but the problem is that, until you've read something, you don't know if you wanted to read it or not. As for the 'moving on' part, why should a majority have to 'move on' because of the actions of a minority?
I shared a very different view on a post made by a member and I brought it up. We had a few post back and forth and then it went to pm's where after a few messages we both came to the conclusion that neither of us was being pricks and had a very nice civil chat about music.
Now to me, that was a brilliant example of two sensible people dealing with their differences in adult way and finding common ground because you are focussed on what each other is saying and not being sidetracked by 50 other people muddying the water.
To be honest I am here to chat about music and bass and meet other people who are the same which is what happened in the end with the two of us. It's a pity that because of the attitude about "bringing the forum down" that we felt it had to go to pm's and you all missed the end result.
I'm a big fan of reconcilliation, but I'd much rather miss out on witnessing it happening than for it to be done in public and failing. Human nature is such that we all feel a need to 'take sides' when witnessing confrontation and the more people involved, the less chance there is of a good conclusion.
Now don't get me started on grammar police, I really feel the biggest insult to a person is to correct their grammar. You have no idea where they grew up or even if they went to school. For some even having the ability to type a post on a forum is a major achievement and to have to be corrected on grammar is fear and should never be lorded over them by a school teacher wannabe. Again I am not having a go at anybody I am just saying spare a thought for the guy and how the might feel by being pulled up on when to use a full stop.
It has always happened from time to time and probably always will. If your involvement in a 'discussion' is limited to the use of words and meanings then there's not a lot else to 'attack' should you succumb to the urge to do so. Interestingly though, people are most often 'pulled up' on their grammar, punctuation and spelling whilst in the middle of an argument and usually when they've just told someone else that they are ignorant. I can't recall a time where I've ever seen anyone pulled up whilst posting something friendly or non-confrontational.

How do you know if a bassist is 'good' or not?
icastle replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Depends on where the word 'good' is coming from. If it's from the bass player then, in my experience, they're not. If it comes from the musicians that play with the bass player, then they probably are. Never trust self proclaimed excellence. -
I've many times accidentally hit a bass string with a fingernail when i had practices and hadn't time to trim them back (i'm a lot better at keeping them short now). If you ask me, it's a very different sound. Not bad, in fact, i think good. You could play bass like that, but it would obviously be slower, and a real bastard on your nails, but if you need them long for classical, just apply the same technique to bass.
Depends on your bass playing style. I've always played bass with nails, usually about 3 or 4mm. I can vary the attack\tone by striking\pulling the string using my fingers at different angles to the strings. I can use my finger pad (think playing a double bass but on the opposite side of the finger)or I can use my finger nail (or indeed a bit of each). I've found that playing fast isn't a problem, but I do use three fingers on my right hand (with the little finger reserved for pull offs). It took me a while to perfect, but it was worth it and I couldn't imagine playing any other way now.
I have a Peavy 'Solo' mains/battery guitar amp (Not for putting my D/B through I might add!!!)---max.15W output---in need of a new quality 8inch 4ohm speaker. Does anyone know where I can obtain one?
If you want something that'll definitely fit and work then Peavey UK have a very good spares department.
Question: Not knowing a thing about speakers what wattage of speaker can I go up to?
Well it really depends on how the '15W' has been measured, but anything above 30W is likely to be a waste of money.
Question: Do the terms: 'Driver' / 'Sub-Woofer' come into this? Do I avoid these speakers? Are those speakers for cars? Hi-Fi?
Well 'driver' is just another word for a speaker. Subwoofer is a bit of a variable description as there's more to a subwoofer than just a speaker, it can also involve electronics and cabinet design - I'd avoid them for this particular application.
A lot of things could be argued but i simply stated that i didn't like it.
I'm not arguing or trying to persuade you to like it, I was just pointing out the facts. Although now I think of it, there's at least 17M people out there who'd disagree with you...
TBH though none of it has had the impact (or sales) of Tubular Bells.
No not really. I guess the biggest things since then were Incantations (with a huge live band/orchestra on tour) and then a few chart singles from Five Miles Out and Crises.
Has anyone seen Dave in the last few days. I am worried that he may be araldited to a Peavey bass combo and is trapped.
I don't think he'll be trapped, but he might have a slightly extended midrange... EDIT: Mind you, it'd give his local A&E staff something to chuckle about...

...are you intentionally trying to incite another argument because it's gone quiet or was it an accident?

It's taken me this long to even dare look...

How was your transition from 4 string to 5??
icastle replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
I've tried it three times now, and on each occasion it has produced the same result - a five string bass in the for sale section
...so if anyone wants a 5 string then tell Conan what you think is good and visit the For Sale section a week later... -
How was your transition from 4 string to 5??
icastle replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
The best thing you can do is play your 5 string constantly without going back to your 4. It took me about a month to get used to it (got my first 5 in 1996) and have never looked back. Having the extra string also means you can give your fretting hand a bit of a rest by playing things in the middle of the neck, as opposed to playing it up by the nut (i.e. if you're playing in C or D). The main thing to remember about the extra low range is using it sparingly.
This ^. The only real problem I can remember having was getting the B and E strings muddled up resulting in some hilariously unpleasant and inopportune notes at times. Took a few weeks to get to grips with it. -
Though I have noticed lately that there is a bit of an era of confrontation within this very site of which I feel a bit fed up of seeing. Arguments over daft stuff that has no actual bearing over real life. It just seems so silly. Not so long ago I had two pieces of bad news, news that really made me question who I am & what really is important in life, it's times like these you look at how you spend your time & think I could get more out of life than what I'm getting, I just need to sort out the negative things from the positive. And that's when I realised that arguing & confrontation is not something to seek out, it's not worth even taking part in unless you are going to get something out of it that really matters. Life is something we all have & we waste our times talking about all the bad things that are. life to a point is hard & sometimes very unforgiving, so why spend our private time talking about negative things when we could achieve so much more ? We all have a passion for the same thing, we a lovers of music in various guises we create music. We do fantastic things, we create songs & play music we love with all our hearts and we do it because it feels good. so why get involved in arguments that don't feel good ? It just doesn't make any sense at all to me. Time is something I don't want to spend on negative things anymore, life should be better than this.
Without doubt the most sensible and eloquent post I've seen on here for ages.
What do you call a Scottish shepherd who's lost his dog? Douglas. What do you call a Scottish shepherd who's lost his dog, but has large feet? Big Shughie Douglas.
I am now going to track you down and sing sea shanties at you...
There are also more trolls, because they appear to be a relatively fixed percentage of any online group of individuals.
The thing I've always found with anything that's 'fixed' is that it comes undone if you use a big enough hammer and wallop it hard enough.
I was born in the house opposite Hilda from Lieutenant Pigeon and I used to hang around with her grandchildren. Just thought I'd better let everyone know
I saw Kirk Douglas on the beach, filming a scene from To Catch A Spy, and dropped my ice cream. That was in 1971 and I'll never forgive him for that and I hate his children as well...
I'm still none the wiser about NGH's Beatles connections though. Despite GK's post to the ontrary, there's nothing in that thread about it.
There is, but you do have to dig through a lot of erm.... 'stuff' to find it. NGH lived in the house opposite Paul McCartney's back in the Beatlemania days.

I'd be more inclined to pick up a replacement neck, spray that instead and put the other one somewhere safe in case I ever wanted to sell the bass on.
