1.
Any tips for a first timer ?
That Weller gun isn't the best tool for the job, they concentrate the heat on far too small a surface area and most electronics engineers steer away from them these days. There's a pretty useful thread which will take you through the basic steps - it worked out just fine for the OP so it should work fine for you too. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/110170-dull-solder-joint-why/page__hl__soldering
 2.
I find your comments seem like an attempt to have a snipe at jazz players who apparently don't need their instrument to produce a quality tone.
However, as ubassman is also a jazz player, that seems very unlikely to me.
As one of my teachers told me as I quizzed her about bow technique, 'let your ears be your guide'.
Now that is a lesson that should universally be taught to all bassists regardless of genre or instrument type.
 3.
Yup, it squelches like a fat bird doing 'armpit farts' in a bath of warm swarfega.
I think I'll just have to bow to your experience there...
 4.
He is right, you are merely failing to understand what he said :-)
I strongly suspect you're right, I have to admit that I've kinda lost track of what it was that I was disagreeing about.
 5.
Slightly OT but was asking my 6 year old daughter where our food comes from.. Pork - "A Pig" Beef - "A cow" Milk - "A cow" Yoghurt - "An Out of Date Cow" They do make you laugh at times
I like that one and totally agree with it!
 6. Excellent
 7. I use a Hiscox for my SR505. With a little bit of folding I can just about fold the strap into the case. I use generic rectangular cases for other weaponry so all the bits and bobs fit in those. Leads just get stuffed in the back of my amp flightcase.
 8.
Big hat.
Back in those days I mostly wore a climbing helmet. 'Big helmet' is just asking for trouble....
 9.
I do have the wookie haircut to back it up though.
I used to have one of those as well but it used to annoy the hell out of me when it blew over my face.
 10.
Thank you Ian, I'm really pleased with the bass. As are the guys at Overwater, which is most pleasing of all. The bass is off into sanding next, and then finishing, which will really bring the wood to life! Can't wait! RK
I'll be watching out for the pics.
 11. Yep. I found a reference and it intrigued me, the location being the village next to mine... "A true Relation of Four most barbarous and cruel Murders committed in Leicestershire by Elizabeth Ridgway; the like not known in any Age: With the Particulars of Time, Place (and other Circumstances); how she first poisoned her own Mother; after that a Fellow-servant; then her Sweetheart; and, last of all, her Husband: For all which Tragical Murders, she being brought to Justice, was tried, and found guilty, at the Lent Assize held in the said County; and for the same was burnt to Death, the 24th of March, 1684.” It started off as a set of lyrics, then I ended up with two different tunes, then a different set of lyrics and then another tune. At last count I had six complete song arrangements, a smattering of fragmented passages/spare parts and was getting suspiciously close to creating a concept album, which I'm far too young and short haired to have any truck with...
 12.
That stuff's good, but don't breathe in fumes or get it on your skin!
It is very very smelly UPVC frame cleaner takes it off your fingers pretty well - in fact it's the only thing I found that would get it off of a surface other than sandpapering it. It also comes in any RAL or BS colour as well. One thing to mention is that the surface needs to be thoroughly cleaned with spirits before spraying or it'll craze on oil residue from fingerprints.
 13.
Still disagreeing?
Yep but only 'cos it's making you sound all Scottish. It really depends on how much less of a stretch it takes to fret the note than it did when the guitar was originally setup. If you shove all the saddles right forward and then mount it in the correct location, you'll get the correct intonation for that set of strings at that action. Lower the action or use a different gauge of strings (so exerting less stretch than you had to use on the previous setup) and you'll not have anywhere to go with the saddles.
 14. Talentless? You'll be right at home here then... Welcome Mark. I'm off to South America now with my fake passport to start a new life...
 15. Guys, That's two threads on here in the last 24 hours where I've seen people are going out of the way to help. I'm not given to emotional outbursts but I really just have to say that I feel very proud to be part of a community like this. I take my hat off to all of you.
 16. Try this. Instead of just sitting on top of the plastic as a layer, it actually molecularly bonds to the existing plastic. It's not cheap (about £15 a tin) but I've used it in the past to paint UPVC window frames and it carries a 15 year guarantee.
 17. The only thing I'd expect to find underneath the bridge is a piece of wire - could this plastic be an unstripped piece of wire? If so, strip it so the bare metal is showing and put the bridge back over it. Which screws on the bridge are stripped?
 18. You need to be looking around TR3 (label Q3) 2N5088 or IC3 (label U3) 4007
 19. 20. That is a fantastic looking bass! I've always been a sucker for a nice wooden finish and this certainly ticks all my boxes.
 21. Ah, this one's a REV A version using a 4558 dual op amp.
 22.
Ok, I'll disagree then! I agree that there are a number of factors behind setting the intonation (e.g. action, string diameter, string tension, and how hard you tend to press down on the strings when you play, which is why intonation is always a personal setting). But all of these factors go into determining how much you stretch the string when you fret a note. Nothing changes the fact that you are stretching it, to some degree, so the saddle needs to be moved backwards to compensate, but never forwards (from that "equidistant" position).
I disagree with your disgree... If you have the saddles all the way forwards as your neutral starting off point then that'll be fine (we hope) for the gauge of strings and action that is set when the bass leaves the factory. Problem with that is that it ties you into a set action and a set string gauge... and you know how picky and finickety bass players can be...
 23. How about this?
