1.
I'm trying to find some local slags & all I keep getting are ads for bloody bass amps.
Living in the heart of what used to be a coal mining area, if I look for local slags all I get is anthracite and fuzzy photos of men in moleskin pants...
  2. I think I've played nearly, if not all of, the songs mentioned so far. However, the last time we had a count up we had about 80 songs we can 'pull out of the bag' whenever we want, so having to drop some is never a problem for us. As for whether the landlord is justified in banning certain songs, it really depends what you're motivation for playing is in the first place. If you're looking for a fun night out, then having restrictions placed on your set is going to hurt. If you're out to earn money, then he who pays the bucks calls the shots and you just have to accept that's the way things work.

  6.
As it stands, you have to do something horribly wrong to get a feedback that is anything but positive, so the strength of a bad feedback is high. If it were open, then its a bunch of information from which to make a decision on your own personal dealings, rather than having moderators dictate what information is available.
I've not done a stint in the 'For Sale' areas yet, but I can see a difficult balance having to be maintained given that it's actually an individual standing there being judged rather than someone with a different opinion you are talking to in an OT thread. My own feeling is that if a transaction hasn't gone smoothly, posting derogatory comments about the seller is just going to burn any bridges that exist for mediation and throw away what slim chance there is of getting a successful resolution. I think, so far, that I have only seen two reports, amongst the floods that appear in the BC moderation queue, regarding possible bad transactions. One of those is actively being investigated by a mod and the other was from someone who posts here infrequently complaining about a transaction he did with a non BC member, based in a different country and on a site other than BC.
The only relevant thing is the ability to block PMs, that's totally annoying and basically the reason I don't do much by way of listing spares and parts on BC any more, and go straight to ebay, where I can block people at will, and pay for that convenience, and generally not have to deal with lowballs.
I agree that's annoying and very surprising, but this is an OTS software package and not something that we have had written especially for us. There's a limit to how much 'under the bonnet tinkering' that can be done, so we're kinda reliant on the guys at IP Board to sort this problem out in a future release of their software.
This is about the feedback section is a forum for information, and restricting said information only serves to undermine the validity of the information that is there. I've not really had any bad transactions, but I generally rely on my intuition on if someone is worth dealing with rather than the feedback section.
Looking at the mistakes that professional information holding companies make on an almost daily basis, intuition is definately a valuable asset. Taking that into account, how well do you reckon a bunch of unpaid mods on a free bass discussion forum are going to fare in comparison? Crikey - I wouldn't trust me!

Seems OK now, but I was certainly having troubles earlier. It seems to have been a routing problem - I was able to ping everything shown in a tracert from here all the way through to the BassChat IP address and there it failed. If I RDP'd onto another desktop which has a different ISP (and therefore a different default route) I was able to get a response from the BC IP address. ...which is a posh way of saying that there's probably a datacentre out there that's had builders in today and one of them unplugged a router to make room for his drill...
  8. I'm just gonna sit in this liferaft and wait for the tsunami to arrive...
  9. Having a dedicated singer is always a bit of a gamble. You need someone with stage presence, someone who becomes 'the face' of the band and can captivate an audience. The problem often is that the person who can meet all those criteria AND actually sing is only one twist of DNA away from being a prima donna.
  10. Still doing 2 or 3 gigs a month in the folky circuit and about the same in the function band. It's been quite a good year for us in publicity for both bands, radio appearances and headlining at a few folk clubs and the covers band headlining at two festivals this summer. Pretty well booked through to November now and we're starting to get xmas and NYE queries coming in.
  11. If you think about it, it's hard enough to get a group of friends that all get along with each other, now add artistic temperament, musical ability and taste to the equation. The chances of hitting all of those criteria are pretty slim. In a band context, as a bare minimum, you'll need to be able to stand in the same room together without inserting equipment into each other and have some musical ability. I've been playing in bands for well over 30 years now and it's only in the last 5 years that I've managed to find a group of musicians that actually tick all of those boxes.
  12.
Oddly it's not even my favourite colour, just seems to look good on every bass! Had a set of Fender flats once with a horrendous green silk, had to get rid because it was clashing... sounded quite nice though!
A bass player that understands colour co-ordination? That has to be a first... (Ha - that has to be the first time anyone has ever managed to insult every bass player in the world using just six words... )
  13.
Roto Swingbass all the way, 50% for the tone and 50% for that sexy red silk. However if Elixir ever bought out a set of their coated lovelies with red silk ends my loyalty would be severely tested...
...any prizes for guessing your favourite colour..?
  14.
you aint going to change MB1 Nige, its just not gonna happen!!
Nope. And I've been a purveyor of [s]bad[/s] high quality jokes for too many years to change now.
  15.
I rarely post these days but I am Mrs Lurksalot! Big thanks to all admin and mods (past and present) for their hard work Am now off to cause mischief somewhere in the hope that icastle will reprimand me!
- you're the second one in two days to say that. I'm starting to wonder if Ped has plans to set up SpankyChat and everyone knows about it except me..!
  16.
Not new passwords. Passwords to their own account. effectively giving their mates all the mod (Black) magical powers Was quite interesting. a few of the Mods had been complaining about a long standing member in the "Secret place" who had decided to poke the hornets nest . So another Mod let him use their account so he could see what they were saying, that was followed by a bit of trouble making by a "hacker" who accessed that Mods account. Was fun.
Yep, that'd be a problem on any system. In the commercial world it's usually indicative of poor management systems, a lack of organisation, poor leadership and/or a lack of commitment to the 'service' being delivered. We have none of those problems - it'd drive me up the wall if we did.
  17.
But one thing most of the big ones have in common is after a big change in Mod team there is a meltdown. I've lost count how many I've been on or signed up to not been on for ages and just paid a visit to to pass unemployment boredom and discovered a meltdown in progress or the aftermath going on. From new mods getting power trips, still trying to find the boundaries that their predecessors have marked in urine many moons earlier and the new ones overstepping that mark pissing people off to simple jealousy from people not chosen or even asked stirring a bit of trouble then blaming an over zealous new mod.
Well, there's nothing that the new mods can do if people want to stir up a bit of trouble, but I'm hoping that won't happen. Something that I think all the new mods will agree with me on, is that we have absolutely no wish or desire to change this forum into something other than it's always been. IMO, this should be a partnership, everyone pulling together in the same way we've always done to ensure BC remains the place to come to for bass friendly chat. From what I've seen, the majority of the work revolves around preventing scammers and spammers from running riot in here - something that most of us, myself included, had never thought about the lack of.
I've seen new mods start breaking rules just because they now think they can. Hand out passwords to their forum mates so they can read whats in the Mod only part of the forum to one that went "rogue" on a forum where Mod accounts are separate from posting accounts (So anonymous mods) . Instead of simply deleting rule breaking posts as the norm he/she was retyping them making the poster look even more knobish (that was actually funny).
True, Administrators do have the necessary permissions on the system to do things like that - but mods don't. Even if they did, I don't doubt for one second that the Admins would practice some buttock reshaping exercises on anyone who tried playing juvenile games like that. These Admins are the same bunch of [s]reprobates[/s] highly skilled techs that have been kicking around doing 'adminy' stuff for yonks.
Not saying all that will happen. But I will sit with the ten toes up and watch eagerly anyway
I think you're gonna be sat there for a long while waiting mate.
