If they can sort the driverless car thing (as has recently been suggested), then who needs car radios?
That'll bring forth a whole new flurry of nerdy quips about 'updating drivers', 'rebooting' and bring an entire new reality to the acronym BSOD...
Longbox, anyone? I take the point on "ignore" - but that's willful. The flip side of the coin is that they blundered into it. Not sure which is better or worse.
Did he trip and break his nose or did he walk into a door and break his nose? Either way round, he's still got a broken nose.
Thinking it through, did we see any significant investment in security before the genie of piracy was out of the bottle? It felt to me like they simply tried to ignore the channel
I'm not sure if it was 'ignore' or if it was a complete lack of understanding of where technology was going to impact their business model. Whichever one it was, they all followed suit and are now all in the same boat. I seem to remember Sony implementing a security package (MediaMax) on some of their CDs about 5 years ago and getting hauled into court for it. It cost them a packet to implement it in the first place and a further packet to buy themselves out of the resultant mess.
Another added value might be some 'good' music. Lots of demand for that, these days. I mean, giving away three crappy 'bonus' tracks with the other 16 crappy 'paid-for' tracks doesn't really float anyone's boat, does it?
Ah, but that's opening up a different container of wriggly things. What I consider to be 'good', whilst appealing to those adorned in beige cardigans with leather elbow patches, probably wouldn't go down quite so well with a less discerning listener.
I meant the bass drum tone was lacking - bit difficult to get that from the fertiliser sack!
I meant he'll probably pass the watering can tip on to the drummer.
What's a solo?
It's where you annoy the other musicians so much that they b*gg*r off to the bar and leave you playing.
That is true, but the "tangible benefit" right now & in the near future is whether it's a loss cutter benefit or an actual benefit in excess of where they are now. There's not much "added value" (the trendy new must have) to something that doesn't physically exist, part from giving something extra away for nothing (like the "bonus tracks" on a 12" single), which doesn't gain profit as such. Once CDs, DVDs & Games are download only where else can they go?
Yep that's what I was trying to explain earlier. If something is available free of charge then it's market value is essentially zero. The only real 'value added' route would be to give people who pay, something extra - 'extra' equating to 'free'. That free portion then gets shared - your 'value add' is then worth zero and now you have to add some more freebies and the cycle continues. That'd leave the music industry with the same size bills they have now, but without the returns and, I suspect, even a break even possibility.
I was interested to hear on a radio report last week that they have again reduced the qualifying amount of sales needed to acheive Silver, Gold & Platinum status. When I was a kid a platinum album had sold a million copies, now it's half that IIRC.
Back in the 80's I used to be dead impressed if someone told me they had a single in the charts. Nowadays, even if I work my hardest to seem impressed, the best I can muster is 'hmmm, that's nice'.
It is more it will go if it doesn't change, or it will change because of the massive downside of not doing so. The music industry is already too bloated to sustain itself, that's clear enough.
It's not clear though is it? All I'm really seeing here are loads of unsubstantiated claims cunningly(ish) disguised as fact and flying in the face of commercial reality.
Ha! Love it. Good "snare" snap there, but a bit lacking in the bass department. He needs to have a look round the shed for a large watering can to kick.
The bassist is actually a BC member so I'm sure he'll pass that on...
Gutted for them. Central heating, electricity and child labour laws really wrecked the chimney sweeping business, probably need banning. Or at least morally, should keep burning coal in your house, otherwise you are a bad person who doens't want children to have gainful employment.
It really doesn't matter how many analgous semantic kids you get climbing up chimneys, the industry will only change if and when it can see a tangible benefit in doing so - that's not an opinion or an argument, that's a fact.
This goes back to that thing where music existed before the recording industry existed.
<sigh> I miss those days, I used to enjoy being a wandering minstrel singing bawdy songs for bread and ale... I got moved on from all the best places y'know...
Depends on the label. one that released the Caricatures CD found it through file sharing, and ha no problem with ongoing digital distribution. Seems to be how modern labels work. A company in the business of distributing copies of material saying that copying and distributing material is wrong, apply that to other industries
Well your record label, and I dare say some others, have obviously adopted a business model that can support that sort of activity. However, to be perfectly realistic, there's no way that the large established labels are going to be able, or indeed willing, to adopt that same business model that only exists because of current legal vagaries.
This is true. However, if they don't want it shared at all then by following the logic of that opinion, they'd never release it into an environment where the sharing of culture is what is expected to happen.
Whilst that argument may stand up in a philosophical context, it falls flat on it's face from a commercial point of view. The 'environment' where the record industry makes it's money is the only environment where it can - and that environment has become one where sharing is seen to be a problem. Of course the music industry is going to release material into that environment - the alternatives are to either walk away from music altogether or lock it in a metal box and never release it.
-
But recording and releasing said material is a very strange way to express that opinion.
Only because it suits a particular viewpoint. Record company opinion is, obviously, that copying and sharing is wrong - they've expressed that in no uncertain terms. They still release music every other week - that doesn't make their opinion invalid no matter how hard an argument anyone throws at it. The problem at present is that technology has galloped way ahead of various copyright laws that were fit for purpose, but no longer are.
OK , as a quick thread hijack, I can do photos by any number of methods just fine , but I just can't seem to do the embedding of you tube stuff and such , I want to embed the BCbass relay map , the code is on the links of the map , but its beyond me , I tried embedding this stuff before but no joy , Is there enough space left in this thread or does the answer deserve its own .
All you do with YouTube is copy the URL of the page you are looking at in YouTube and paste it on the page where you want it to appear. The forum software does the rest for you.
But if you think that others shouldn't have the right to make copies and share them non-commercially with their friends, then that's simply absurd - and to be frank you don't deserve to have your material shared and propagated.

That is way out of line. Disagree with my opinions all you want but don't question my integrity as a musician because of that. You have no right to say what I do and don't deserve professionally based on a single opinion I have.
If an artist decides that they don't want their material shared then they have a perfect right to express that opinion. In fact, the artist has more right than anyone else to express an opinion on sharing their work than anyone else has, regardless of whether they can stop their work being shared or not. This topic has divided people for a number of years now and neither the 'pro' or the 'anti' camp, most of whom aren't even musicians, are going to see their wishes granted for a long time to come. In the meantime, it should be beholden to us, the musicians, to carry on doing what we do best, producing music, and not stoop to the levels of mere.... mortals. Let's set an example and keep it civil guys.

Cajon's? Posh hi-tech stuff. Look what you can do with a pair of brushes and a plastic bag in a garden shed...

I've never really thought about it. I tend to just drift off into my own little world and immerse myself in the music when I'm playing. I do have to remind myself to make it look like I haven't though because it makes my natural arrogance level appear much larger than it actually is.

Certainly not me. I can give you one clue though. If you look at the top of his head you can see that his conservatory electrics are missing an earth connection...

1975 Fender Jazz - very noisy! Do I need new pickups?
icastle replied to Mike's topic in Repairs and Technical
There's an earth wire sat underneath the bridge that runs back to the jack socket. It might have a poor connection at the jack socket end. More likely though is the wire sat underneath the bridge has become corroded (rub it with a bit of sandpaper to clean it up as well as the underside of the bridge that pushes against the wire) or perhaps time has caused the wire to embed further into the woodwork so it can no longer touch the underside of the bridge (it's not fixed - it just sits there - just move it a centimetre). -
Bass player who plays every song in same key?
icastle replied to lowlandtrees's topic in Bass Guitars
A friend of mine plays in this band. Won't name them. The bass player plays everything in the same key through a modulator(or whatever its called) which changes the key as needed, Wit aboot that. Is this common?
Thankfully, no. Whilst it's true that most bass players have 'favoured' keys for different things, I don't think I've ever met one who can't play in a different key without resorting to technology to get them there. -
Wot, posting things three times? Yep
Fixed

Would this be a good thing? A Led Zep Reunion
icastle replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I never really 'did' Led Zeppelin, they were sort of 'over there' while I was 'over here'. If they want to get back together and play for the sake of playing then that's fair enough. If it was me, my concern would be that my fans would either love the material, regardless of the quality, because of their undoubted loyalty - or hate it because the years had taken their toll. -
`blimey......... thanks for that speedy ,knowledgable reply........ and yes you`re right.............. unless a second hand female inline cable (60320 C9) is knocking about,I probably won`t be able to get one....... I`ll try fitting `kettle socket ` and see how we go...... thanks again!!!!!!
No problem Those 'kettle' sockets should fit in the same hole and, if you're lucky, the screw holes will match up as well.
