HELP : Peavey Combo300 LOUD cracks & pops !?...
icastle replied to nuno1959's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yep, it's those big blue things They certainly shouldn't be making a noise like that! There's not really an upgrade for them, a capacitor is just a capacitor as far as power supplies are concerned. As long as the replacements are the same voltage and value, they'll work just fine - they don't need to be Peavey ones. You need to be aware though, those caps are definitely blown, but there might be other things wrong as well, so don't get too excited yet... -
The Bass remains in the Wild West Midlands then... Anyone gonna pick this beastie up? It got an outing in sunny West Bromwich last night and is probably on the way to The Crown Inn, 23 Main St, Heather, Leicestershire, E67 2QP, next Saturday. PLEASE let me know if you are gonna pick it up there as I'm hoping to travel light next week and if no one throws their hat in the ring, it'll stay at home. C'mon people, this thing needs to get moving!
I can see that pub from my window. It's actually LE67 2QP

HELP : Peavey Combo300 LOUD cracks & pops !?...
icastle replied to nuno1959's topic in Repairs and Technical
Right in that case it sounds like a power supply issue to me. I'd suspect the smoothing caps. I can't find a picture of the board to give you precise details of where these are located, but they will be two of them, they will be the largest capacitors in the amp and they will be somewhere near the power socket. Before you try changing them, take a look at the underside of the board and make sure they are soldered firmly to the circuit board - they have been known to fracture the solder joint over a long period of time because the components are large and the connections are small. -

Does it make that noise with the volume turned down? -
I did say 'Ok', cos no one bass player is bigger than BC
I'm smaller than most topics! The thing is that we try to run BassChat in a way that the vast majority of people like, a considered consensus if you like. Within reason, we try to give people what they want - the left handed bassists wanted a specific forum for them to advertise basses in - they're getting it, members wanted to be able to sell non musical stuff here on BC - it's coming. The bump rule was bought in after complaints from members and a quick search through the forums show that it has been discussed quite a few times over the years, the consensus still considers it to be a good thing.
The same rule still applies. It was put in place to prevent people from artificially moving their listing to the top of the pile and gaining an unfair advantage.

Fane used to manufacture some really heavy duty bass drivers from 10" (Studio 10B) all the way up to 18" (Studio 18B). Those were rated at 200w. They also made a HF horn (the HF250) which you needed both hands to pick up. Those beasties used to really pack a punch - I used to have a load of Fane loaded cabinets with Studiomaster amps and desks as a PA system back in the 80's.
I can see that at the top of the E, where the string becomes just the core and a single wire going around it, that little wire has snapped, but its well passed the nut and where the nylon cover starts
FW strings don't have the same sustain that RW strings have, so that's part of what you're experiencing. Short scale basses also don't have the same degree of sustain that their longer scaled brothers have, that's another part of what you're experiencing. However, from the description above it sounds as though the inner core and the outer winding have parted company and that mechanical 'break' has probably tipped the scales too far.

Dingwall Combustion FD3 Pickup Problem
Are you sure?
Apologies, I hadn't clicked they were Dingwall issue. However, they certainly aren't going to fit in that bass as it stands - there's just not enough room. -

Dingwall Combustion FD3 Pickup Problem
icastle replied to Jellyfish's topic in Repairs and Technical
It's not a Dingwall problem, these are aftermarket pickups that it was never designed to take. The answer is to route out a recess for the cable to run into and have the cable hole enlarged so the cable will run smoothly into it. I'd be inclined not to do a DIY job on it though. -
Boschma 2U shallow case - rear support rails?
icastle replied to dincz's topic in General Discussion
There's really no need for rear rails on a shallow flightcase, you're not going to get enough mechanical leverage to damage anything. If you imagine standing the two units on top of each other, how much tension is there on the front panel? All you're doing when you rack these two items is standing one on top of the other inside a box. The screws just stop the items from sliding out of the case. -
No mate it's not just you. It was removed as it was being misused by a small number of individuals. A dedicated 'LH For Sale' forum is opening next week and a new LH thread will be following shortly.
Currently (in the Stagg case) ive had to remove the amps rubber feet to get it in and just used the screws at the front to secure – am I meant to secure the amp internally too?
I've rack mounted a few Hartke amps over the years and the feet always get in the way - I just take them off. You've mounted it correctly, it is just the screws on the front panel that hold rack mounted kit secure. Nothing wrong with adding a bit of packing on the underside to give it some support though - I usually use that foam draught excluder stuff, sticky side attached to the case side.
I had been put off before by stories of the coating peeling off and them not being as durable as advertised, but having tried them now I am truly impressed.
I've used them for quite a few years now on a couple of my basses that really get a lot of use. I get the impression that the 'flaky coating' issue seems to affect pick players more than finger players - I can't be trusted with a pick, so it doesn't affect me...

The covering is immaterial, it's the copper that carries the signal. If the plastics we use today had been available back in the 1950's then covering wire with cloth would never have been seen as an even remotely good idea.
