I use open strings mainly for hammer ons up the neck. I also like to use an open D string as a drone while playing a little melody line up on the top of the G string over it.
100% too. I got a bit caught out by Charles Mingus. I have never heard any of his stuff. Kim Gordon also caught me out.
I knew Tina Weymoth played a short scale Fender, and did not have huge, hairy arms so that was a bit of a giveaway!
I have fitted Fender straplocks to all my staps and basses. I like the simple push/pull simpleness to them, and I can switch to whatever guitar or strap that I feel like.
Have you thought about the Amphones? You can detach the quarter inch jack and use them as regular headphones as well.
