I remember reading somewhere that one of the reasons he got that fat recorded sound was the use of a 5" speaker used as a mic.Somehow it was wired to act as a microphone and placed in front of the cab, dont know if this is possible but its a good story.
And a true one! Cut and pasted from Wiki... "'Paperback Writer' was the first time the bass sound had been heard in all its excitement," said Beatles' engineer Geoff Emerick in Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions. "To get the loud bass sound, Paul played a different bass, a Rickenbacker. Then we boosted it further by using a loudspeaker as a microphone. We positioned it directly in front of the bass speaker and the moving diaphragm of the second speaker made the electric current." I had the chance to visit Abbey Road studios a few years back All that history and I was surprised how small it was!

 3.
I,m thinking about selling or swapping my 1977 vintage P Bass as its a bit too heavy for me theses days! All serious offers considered or swaps for similar quality instruments, I,m thinking about a stingray or maybe a less weighty Precision. It was setup and restrung by the Bass Centre in London last week with elites 45-105,s and the action and neck set the way I wanted. It was fitted with active pickups when I bought it over 10 years ago, but I had it professionally restored to its original glory. So its all original except for Fender Vintage Pickups with cloth wiring loom Pickguard V & T controls from a 1973 P Bass TGI flight case. I,m looking at around £1200. Cheers! Paul. 4.
I had a JV '57 reissue back in the day. I got it only a couple of weeks after they came out so like yours it was a first issue with the big Fender on the headstock. Like a fool I sold it a few years later to get a MIA Jazz (think it was a 1980 or thereabouts in sienna burst). I was a fool it wasn't a patch on the JV. The JV is probably the only bass I've ever regretted parting wuth (and there's been a few). Do not make the same mistake
Oh yes the Squier JV series I bought a fiesta red 57 Squire P Bass back in December 1984 Lovely maple neck as I remember. I had it resprayed in 1985 and had it fitted with a black pickguard. A couple of years later, I foolishly sold it!! My 14 month old son loved it!!

 6. Thanks Mart, but I,m not looking for a 5 string at the moment!
 7.
I've a Ray I would consider trading for this - unfortunately it weighs more than your Precision at 10lbs 9.5lbs aint bad for a late 70's P I believe. Unless you get a nice trans Ash Ray a lot of Rays (notice I didn't say all so MM fanatics don't pounce) with solid finishes come up in the 9.5 lb category
I see you have 2 Rays in your sig, I take it your talking about the 30th Anni Model?
 8. How many simultaneous tracks can you record at the same time?
 9. Its Quite weighty, my bathroom scales reckon about 9 and a half pounds, about 4kg HTH!
 10.
Sunday morning bump
Monday morning sure looks fine! Bump
 11. I,m going gigging tonite, so I,m gonna bump this!
 12. Heres my settee contribution Sorry about the crap quality of the pics thats the crappy camera on the iphone for yer! OLP Ernie Ball MM2 Stingray copy, These are quite collectable now, OLP pulled the plug on them last year i believe as they were proving a bit too popular! Made in China but quite well made! The nut was a bit sh*t so i had a new one made for it, and the bridge saddle screws were so sharp they cut yer hand when playing with a pick down there! I had it fitted with Rotosound flatwounds and it sounds quite nice! 1977 USA Fender Precision Very heavy peice of kit! When I got it, it was converted to active circuitry by some muppet who made a right pigs ear of it! I relaced the P ups with Fender vintage ones with the old style cloth wound wires and a new pick guard. Had it set up beautifully by the Bass Centre in London last week, they put on a new set of Elites 105-45 on it. I,ll gig it on the weekend and see how it sounds!!
 13. I was in a guitar shop a few months ago trying out a Squire P Bass for a friend who wanted to learn how to play, I cranked it up and played the bassline to "Down In The Sewer" pretty soon I had a little crowd of youngsters gathered around muttering something about The Who and John Entwhistles bassline sounded wicked!!
 14. Hi Paul here! I,ve been playing bass since 1982 when I first heard Bruce Foxton of The Jam as a spotty 17 year old! Nowadays I tend to do the working mens clubs playing all sorts from the 1950,s to the present day. I play a 1977 Fender Precision and an Ernie Ball MM2 Stingray copy (passive) I love to talk to other bassists and you never know, might actually learn something!
