1. i got a small phonic mixer a month or so back and it's great for the kind of thing you're describing - i use it for the same myself.
2. they may play well, but it's not drool-worthy to me. each to their own.

4. i'd prolly say.. 1) bass 2) settings on amp or pedals 3) plectrum (just to be obtuse)
5. i don't have time to play games...i'm too busy playing my bass !!
6. met up with dangerboy today to buy his westone spectrum gt. really pleased - i transplanted the nut from my frankenfretless that has a westone neck and it's a lovely player and has a nice fat humbucker sound. thanks steve...hope to be hearing about that gig soon so...now i have a red bass, and it's coming to the festival gig next weekend !!!
7. sold ben my aria paltinum drive...no hassles at all. the guy has class - if you do deal with him, you'll both come out smelling of da roses.
8. ooh...it's prolly some racket i made back in 1987, in a jesus and mary chain-style band. we used the mission's drum machine for the demo iirc. i've got a tape somewhere with it on...i really must get round to digitising it soon.
9.
A classic example of a jazz bass honk is easily anything and almost everything by Jaco:
thanks. it's not what i'd call a 'honky' sound, but at least i know now.
10.
We have an un-knower of the 'honk' amongst us...run for your lives!!! Sorry about that. Erm, no clips, there's plenty of songs out there that feature this 'honk'. It's that classic mid bite that some jazzes have, the one that makes you screw up your face, flare your nose, a dig every note you play...ooo yeah...funk, funk funk it up!!!
gimmie a clue on the songs...i'm not being obtuse. i just need to hear the quintessential honk
11. no, not bruce dern and a trio of cute robots... i finally have my silent bass rig for home...i managed to score a samsom 120 servo power amp from ebay (£35 delivered !!) and wired it up last night...heaven. so now i have all the valvey tone from my avp-pro, but without the noisy fans on my power amp ! what's more the samson just sits on top of my rack case so it's nice and easy to unplug and move ready for gigging.
12. what do you mean by 'honk' ? any sound clips ?
13. i've never taken a spare bass to a gig.
14. lovely...looks much classier than gold. too much bling ain't my thing !
Ampeg SVP-Pro. Perfect. Well, nearly. A whole extra AU7 valve just for OD, and it works, too. Can be wound right up and never loses control (See Big Muff!) Can even get a different OD/ Distortion from Pushing the AX7 in the gain stage too hard. Or combine them in varying amounts. BUT... You can't switch the OD on or off. Just set it and forget it. Grrr!
try putting a signal booster in from of the svp...i use either a cae line booster or my m-80...a touch of extra gain can add a bit more grind to the sound...and have you tried playing with the footswitchable eq ? tbh the svp isn't meant to be a 2-channel preamp, but playing with the signal you're hitting it with can yield different sounds. each to their own obviously, but i love my svp to bits...
20.
The boss tu-2 is a stonkin pedal, chromatic, step down, 2 step down tuning. Its built like a tank too. Should get one for about £50 and you'll never have to think about tuning again. just my humble opinion
plus the one
21. i've had one on my fender vi since i bought it...not problems so far.
22. girlfren says she might keep my no. 1 bass (the fender jazz), everything else goes to my best mate in preston, to do with as he sees fit.
23.
my point is: what happened to the days where a bass rig was pretty much designed to be the heaviest thing on stage!
technology happened to those days !!! and huzzah to technology i say.
24.
I see these and other shiny works of art, and yes, they are great eye candy. Then I see some guy down the local live pub with a worn-out Fender with just enough surviving bits of paintwork to reveal that it was once a sunburst, getting a fat, woody vintage growl... and I yearn to have that old simple, passive veteran under my shoulders, much more than a blinged-up object d'art with NASA electronics. I'll get my unfashionable old git coat...
/quiety/ i think they're god-awful looking bases...that blue is just horrific
