1. another one here
2. are the pole pieces on the pickup staggered ? just curious...they are on my sabre
3. i'd be right onto one of these if i hadn't recently decided 'no more overdrive pedals'
4. nowt galvanises a band faster than an impeding gig* book it for a months time, and then practise the set till then. you're not a band until you've played a gig ! *other than dipping them in hot zinc that is
5.
mind you I've never seen Jaco play with a plectrum, that would of been interesting.
indeed.
6.
if you do not play "fingerstyle" you will be missing out on control, feel, the ability to slap and pop, easy volume control with your fingers alone, right hand damping, double harmonics, finger tapping.....and on and on....
developing control, feel and volume control with a plectrum is just a matter of practise, as much as acquiring the same skills with fingers is.
7. playing with fingers isn't 'proper' playing any more than playing with a plectrum is. i tend to play with a plectrum at lot more than i do with fingers simply because i prefer the sound. i'm also a lot better at it. that's not to say i don't play fingerstyle...
8. i'm a bit too scared of the plate voltages on valves to go down that route. i've built plenty of op-amp and tranny-based circuits before, so i'd prolly be looking at that again. that kit looks good, but a bit too pricey tbh
9.
That's nice. For a while I was after one of those myself in sunburst. Why don't you use it much these days?
it just doesn't get the sounds i like to be honest...it's pretty darn clanky for a semi, but as i tend to use a very clanky sound it doesn't quite cut it. it plays well, but just isn't for me any more.
10. just mooching round the 'net i found this again, something i stumbled across a while ago. in my quest to get rid of the 'annoying fan' situation i've just scored a cheap silent power amp from ebay and i thought i might try to cook up my own pre to go with it. anyone ever tried this ? know of any good schematics ?
11. ok, here's mine. it used to have some mods (hence the two small switch holes between the vol and tone controls), but now it's back to stock. it's lovely, but it's mainly used for 'on the knee' noodling whilst watching tv these days. as i said...could be up for sale.
12. perhaps cos it's pick-up only ?
13. not to my taste, but then i'm not a huge fan of figured woods.

mxr m-80 di+

just to add i've just come back from practise where i was using a peavey solid state bass head and an ampeg 8x10, with the eq on the head set flat...just relying on the mxr for eq. sounded fabby...both with and without the distortion channel.
15. mrs. pickguard...paging mrs. pickguard to the white courtesy phone... good price btw
16. looks like i'll be cleaning the pole pieces on my cowpoke tonight ! thanks for the advice peeps
17. that's a great sound...works well with those drums
18.
I sometimes have a problem with Stone Roses, I Wanna Be Adored... it's so repetitive that as soon as you think what you're doing it can all go belly up... I also hate playing those really simply basslines where you just follow the chords... no riffs.. I can never remember them as they are so indistinctive....
19. got a mail back this afternoon from jon at black guitars. lovely chap, and the price is right. thanks for the advice (don't worry - when all the work's done, pictures and a run-down will follow !)
20.
I've just got a really sick D&B bass sound out of my Supercollider fuzz going into a Tonefactor 442 analogue filter (which you can now buy as the Boomstick Bottom Feeder). Even though the fuzz compresses the peaks, it's still possible to control the envelope with how much you dig in, and it sounds like a really dark Renegade Hardware style filtered bass synth. Adding octave/modulation/delay to this would be awesome. I'll do some clips alongside drums sometime this weekend!
ooh - i'd like to hear some clips
21. oooh - that's a nice 'un i'll post a pic of my dearmond starfire when i get home. (and not just cos it's possibly, maybe up for sale !)
22. imho playing repetitive stuff should be the first thing you learn as a bass player. it's like the anecdote about stuart copeland saying at a drum clinic that he was about to do what most modern drummers can't do...and then playing a straight, simple rock beat for 2 mins.
