1. i'm now working on the 'pookbass', which is a body and glued-in neck i bought a while back from ebay, and had howard of howard's bass place do some work on (gives you an idea of how long i've had it !!) now that the other project i was working on hasn't worked out, i'm determined for this one to work. i mounted the schaller bridge and machine heads last night, but i've come across a problem...the strings lie against the neck, so they can't even vibrate. now - is this a trussrod issue or will i have to jack the bridge up by a bit ? the schaller bridge i originally used came with an insert to raise it off the body a bit, but that's been sold to a friend years ago, and the one i'm using now hasn't got the 'shim' do i need a bridge with more 'height' ? i don't remember this problem from the first fitting of the parts, but i'm not sure if i used the 'shim' last time... any ideas would be great
 2.
No, it's a Philips cryogenic, specially chosen by the Dood. He did the research for the upgrade and then fitted the valves. Have a look on Watford Valves' website at their spec and properties.
thanks
 3. the body's been junked now...as i said, whatever the cause i can't play an instrument that i don't feel i can trust. i'm now working on the other bass i was building up...expect another tread soon !!!
 4.
That was my thought. If the 12 volt power supply was wired the opposite to the 9 volt supply, that might draw enough current to fry a track.
it was the correct polarity
 5.
Yours Kev! Bump with some pics of the Harma and Philips valves.
is the 12au7 a harma as well ?
 6. hmmm..the neck screws and plate were snug as a proverbial. i've given it a bit of thought and i've decided to leave it...i don't think i'd be comfortable with it now. thanks for the idea tho
 7. would anybody be inerested in mine ? tbh honest i've used it quite a bit since i the faulty one was replaced and in my mind it's more suited to fingerstyle playing than plectrum, so i'm not getting the use out of it that it deserves.
 8. ...a year or so i bought cheapy japanese jazz copy for £40 iirc, with the plan of stripping it and doing it up a bit. time passed and this spring i've finally got round to stripping it and varnishing it. it was going well... just as a test i strung it up today and as i was tightening up the strings... CRACK there's no obvious cracks in the body, but from where i heard/felt the sound come from i reckon the ply in the body's started to go around where i routed the body for the new pickup...it was stored out in the garden shed for quite a while and i reckon the damps's got to the adhesives. shame...it was looking rather nice too, but i'm not risking a fully-strung bass folding up on me at some point. BUT i now know more about finishing wood and varnishing, so i've only really lost a few quid's worth of sandpaper and varnish. so it goes
 9.
how do you pronouce the plural of ibanez?
firewood ?
 10. gig went well, but to be honest i left the night rather pissed off with the headline band. mid-way through their set the bass player's amp goes on the blink - cutting out it seemed, so the call goes out from the stage asking if i can get my head back on... the bass player is so battered he can't even sort out the mess of cables and pedals he's been fiddling with to see if that what was causing the cut-outs. so i help him with that and set up the head for him and ir works fine. then at the end of the set i go up on stage to start packing up, and what do i find ? the bass player's put a bottle of beer on top of my head which, suprise suprise, has spilt all over the rack case. thankfully there was no damage, but i mean...borrow somebody's gear and then use it as a beer table. out of order. AND as i was breaking my stuff down i noticed that they whole stage was pretty much covered in puddles of beer ansd there's empty bottles and broken plastic glasses everywhere... /shrug/ i dunno...it's just not the way i'd conduct myself.
I've always maintained that original material is my primary goal...I never ever wanted to play anyone elses songs.
plus the one. but you are getting paid to play the covers...there's bits of my 9-to-5 i hate doing, but i console myself that at least i'm getting paid for them.

 22.
Who else would have bought this?
me !!!!
 23. a cheap and cheerful fretless is exactly what i've got...i'm sure it's not a fantastic-sounding fretless, but it does the job when i fancy pretending i'm a real bass player !!! but you should think about the project side i think...always nice to play an instrument you've had a hand in creating
 24. my 86 japanese fender jazz (sd pickups, wilkinson bridge), with week-old strings sounds just like a bass should to me.
