1.
Hey mate, if I were you I'd have a look round the items at the for sale section within your budget - there's always something good running at a really good price! Maybe something like this? http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=22561
You can't really go wrong with trace elliot in my opinion. played a few and my mate's band have one, i've been nothing but impressed. good name for quality, hard as a bad of nails too.
 2.
Has anyone actually had any knobs made yet?
In that department i've always found stock equipment to do fine...
 3. Completed items on ebay is usually a good place to start. the trace should sell - everyone loves trace stuff..
 4. OK, i'm thinking about a practise set-up after having to practise silently for the last 9 months. I want to.. - play with tone to figure it out. So i want it to sound relatively nice, and be configurable/play-aboutable - practise silently as far as neighbours are concerned, and also along to cd/computer etc. - have a line out/output suitable for recording on my computer. Also be able to go round my mate's house to record there, and sound nice. - use effects (my own, but more are always welcome) I WAS THINKING.... - of getting a small mixer (like this http://www.behringer.com/502/index.cfm?lang=ENG ), - and a pre-amp (like this http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TubePRE - i use this link becuase the pre-sonus site doesn't work at work, flash huh..). it should sound good (assuming the pre-amp is any good), can play around finding the best setting etc, take the pre-amp round my mates, and of course whack effects before/after the pre-amp. and the mixer will have headphone amplification. I basically want to know if you guys have any better ideas. Of course money is an issue. but temptation for nice kit is also an issue. I've been out of touch with whats about for a while. and i can't tell you how sick i am of playing 'acoustically'. i should have moved on this earlier. thanks for any help.
 5. I've been playing with the idea of replacing the pickup in my stingray for a while. I get a really weak G string sound, and tbh sounds a lttle.. i dunno dead. it's doubtless the desire to fiddle added in as well. I've heard great things about the Nordstrand and thats what i'd go for. Also i remember john east doing a 2 band based on a very early pre-amp, but with a sweepable mid added in, so you'd have bass and treble on one stacked, and gain and sweep for the mid on another. Since you're building it all from scratch a series/parallel switch has gotta be on there. it'd be rude not to.. these 3 are all things i'm thinking of doing to my stock ray.
EBMM will only sell on an exchange basis. They will not do an outright sale. The closest that you will get to an early Stingray sound is a Nordstand pick-up and a John East MM style 2-band pre-amp, in fact there is really nothing in it.
By nothing, could you please elaborate? Cheers
 6. i've never bought anything from bass bass gear, but i have thought about it and still do a lot when i fancy changing my pickup. i've exchanged some emails with them and they always seemed helpful, and their shipping over here doesn't seem extortionate either. Chris
 7. bump just to add that the auto q is my wah of choice, and 60 is a decent price for it
 8.
morley wah and big muff? sounds like you'll like it from your name
I tried buying a big muff off the bay, and by mistake ended up with the double muff fuzz. i have since tried the big muff (owned by a guitar playing friend) and i actually preferred the double muff fuzz, having thought the big muff would blow it out the water. jus my 2 pence worth saying you may get ideas from here, but they're no substitute to trying stuff out yourself. also i do recommend the double muff fuzz if you're after a distortion
