1. Firstly there is no way you can get 8-ohms from two 8-ohm cabs, it's against the Laws of Physics, however; Your two cabs in parallel (daisy chained) together give you 4-ohms so you could put another 4-ohm cab in series (you need a special cable for this). The down side is that the new 4-ohm cab will take 50% of the amps output. Simplest solution is change cabs to something more appropriate or get a cheap power amp and use the Eden as a pre-amp. Impedance is a measurement relative to frequency so you can't measure it with a multimeter, all you can check is dc resistance, although you will get a close indication. ie. a 4-ohm cab will measure closer to 4-ohms than an 8-ohm cab.
 2. Really sorry to hear this Phil. If you want to keep playing then you will find a way.
 3. Last evening Hamster very kindly dropped by to deliver my Hartke strings raffle prize and surprised me with a Get Well card signed by those who were at the Bash. It was a wonderful thought. Thank you so much. I've just spent a long time this morning trying to decipher all the messages and signatures. I was very disappointed that I couldn't be there. Hopefully I'll be fit again for the next Bash.
 4. Some years ago in my former Corporate life I discovered EMS cases. We used a lot of them. They are light but built like a tank. I have several of my own and won't use anything else now. They are expensive new but occasionally they come up on Ebay like here. This is a very good deal.
 5.
Hey all. I'm just wondering if it's ok to use the effects return on my amp for a line in for a an ipod or mp3 player for home practise/jam alongs etc. Thanks in advance.
You'll need a cable that mixes the stereo left and right down to mono then assuming that you can get enough level to drive the power stage then it should be fine in theory. Unless your head has the option of a series or parallel effect loop, where it all falls down is that by plugging a jack into the effects return you will disconnect the bass so defeating the object of what you are trying to achieve. I do something similar with bass head, which has an excellent headphone output, and a small outboard mono mixer. Effect send into the mixer. PC stereo out via mix-down cable to the mixer. Mixer output to Effects return.
 6. I quite fancy a Status S2 5-string with side LEDs or perhaps a Streamline 5. I'm keeping an eye out but there is nothing around at the moment. Also would like to try a Sandberg PM5. It might just be what I need.
 7.
Well I can't find OBBM or Bassic Bits on EBay. I assume it's this link http://www.bassic.co.uk/ ? I don't know a lot about cables other than an old band mate who used to work at a hifi store taught me not to skimp on cables. I tend to use high quality expensive cable and often unbranded ones designed for bass and figure I can't go too far wrong with that philosophy
I'm sorry that you can't find me. My Bassworld/Basstalk/Basschat User name is obbm. Yes I've been here for a long time. My Ebay Username is bassic-bits. Try following the links in my signature.
 8.
I've been curiously wondering about outboard pre-amps, which then led me to wondering if there were any light weight power amps that I could couple up with. Then I thought that maybe my Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 could act as a power amp by plugging the lead coming out of an outboard pre-amp in to the 'receive' of the effects loop on the amp, thus bypassing the Shuttle's EQ. Or am I talking twaddle?
Perfectly acceptable. The only thing you have to careful with is levels. Does the outboard pre-amp have enough oomph to drive the power stage of the Shuttle.
 9. Has anyone tried the PJB 6B cab, as reviewed recently in BGM?
 10.
If you manage to find them in the UK please let me know. I was looking for the same type of cables a while ago.
Why do you need these specific cables?
 11. Here's my slightly modified Lakland Duck Dunn
 12.
Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, that's not what I'm looking for. I'm not looking for already-made leads, I want to make my own. I want to buy cable, by the metre (or foot.) - martin
I can supply VanDamme Classic Instrument Cable and Klotz HiFi Audio (used to be LaGrange) by the metre.
 13. Sterling 5s are extrememly rare in the UK. If you want a new one then its a 4-month wait. Stingray 5s have been around for about 20-years. There have been various revisions over the years and special editions. There are always plenty on the used market at mostly sensible prices.
 14.
Music Man have flat fingerboards. Well, at last the 3 I have owned all did. With the Sterling and Stingray, you can't say which is the 'better' bass, they are simply different. For example, the Stingray will offer a more warm, old school tone, whilst the Sterling offers more aggressive, more mid range punch. The Stingray is somewhat scooped in the mids. The Pickuips and Preamps are different, but you will get the classic music man vibe with either bass. I love them all! Also, the Sterling offers a smaller neck and smaller offset body and the Stingray is quite a lot fatter. This doesn't neccesarily mean the sterling is lighter than the ray, as wood varies obviously.
OP is asking about 5-string versions. Necks of Sterling 5 and Stingray 5 are the same dimensions.
 15. I am so annoyed that I can't be there. Have a great day chaps.
 16. These magazines are still available. I was going to take them to the Bash but I'm not going now. They are very heavy so need to be collected. I really need the space but am reluctant to skip them. It seems such a waste of good material.
 17.
That's simply because those cabs don't have much ability to move air (cone area x excursion) and therefore really need the boundary reinforcement to cope. Common problem - amplifying bass outdoors is tough! Alex
Thanks. Point taken and understood.
 18.
so you are suggesting that cabs with a rare port are no good for outdoors gigs ? ? ? surly the amp/cab makers would have thought of that when designing the cab ? ? please correct me if Im wrong R
Just personal experience with the pair of Ashdown Mini 4x8s I had 6 years ago. Fine indoors, especially in front of a wall. Useless outdoors in the middle of a stage. That's why I sold them.
 19.
A rear port only needs a port diameter behind it to work well and most heavy-duty speakon cables force you to give the cab that much clearance at the back - literally only 3" or 4" is required for the vast majority of cabs.
Except when you're playing outdoors old boy, when your LF content disappears into the field behind you.
 20.
The neck plate seems to be blank though, surely it should be stamped with the serial number or the logo? The headstock seems to be 1976-8 style from what I can make out. The bridge, I cant find one like it anywhere. I suppose its possible it is a 70's stingray thats just had bits chopped and changed.
My pre-EB has all gold-plated hardware and the neck plate is plain. The bridge should be larger and have the string mutes and yes the pick-up is too close to the bridge. Asked the seller if it was active or passive and if active where was the battery? Answer "hi i know nothing about guitars sorry i cant help you i dont think it has a batt."
 21.
Anyone seen this? Looks a bit dubious to me, but I know little about them. The back plate looks wrong, there is no battery compartment, the bridge doesnt look quite right.... what do you lot think? Ebay link
That is very interesting. The neck looks to be original pre-EB. Bullet truss rod, skunk stripe and 3-bolt neck plate. Control plate could be but the body is probably not. The bridge definitely doesn't look right. Story: Several years ago a local luthier borrowed my pre-EB so that he could take a pattern of the body. He had a customer in Sussex who had several old Stingray necks that he needed bodies for. Go figure.
 22.
I use a 502 and I'm very happy with it. As far as I know, it has the same front end as the 902 but a Class D power section. Does the 902 have a Class A? (and bear in mind, I could be talking though my backside - I haven't checked the Epi site for specs). OBBM - how would you describe the difference, i.e., is the 902 "better" in terms of tone or some other factor - power, versatility re: powering various cabs etc?
It's my understanding that the 902 is also Class D but has a different power supply to the 502. As for the differences I only gigged it a few times with my UL112/T112NYC cabs, both 8-ohms. Bags of power, almost too much, and very, very clean. I used to have a 502 for several years and I think there is a sound difference but couldn't say exactly what. You would have to A/B them to hear the difference. I'm sure the guys on TB can explain. Certainly having two 900-watt power amps gives loads of options for cabs. Running a 5.3-ohm cab and a 4-ohm cab was so simple.
 23.
That's a wicked stack, must have sounded wonderful and generated major trouser flapping action. Love the look of the Status too.
The 212/310 combination was also amazing. Never got the chance to gig it though. It's not a Status, it's a Stingray 5 with a Status neck, my main gigging bass for several years. It just feels and sounds rigth to me.
