Rattling open string and odd harmonic sound?
Ou7shined replied to iBudd's topic in Repairs and Technical
Oddly enough my 440Hz rattle is on a bass with TI flats too. I'm sure it's just a coincidence though. I have a set going on a rattle free 70's P bass soon..... I'll keep an ear out. -

Rattling open string and odd harmonic sound?
Ou7shined replied to iBudd's topic in Repairs and Technical
My '80 G&L L-1000 has a 440Hz rattle too. Try as I might I've never gotten to the bottom of it (and I've heard of many other similar stories). I get the feeling it's coming from the tr. But as it doesn't get amplified, I just treat it as a quirky foible and live with it. -
Traded pedals with NIck.... ... it wasn't until we were just about to do the deed when we realised that the pedal he was trading to me, I had originally sold to him and we'd both forgotten all about it. Haha Anyway the trade was a pleasure and Nick is an excellent guy to deal with, no major hiccups (bar forgetting to post on day one ). He gave me some nice Lane Poor / Bartolini / Flea Bass related tidbits too. Cheers man. Rich.
Having played this :- its was an absolute steal! Needs the thumbrest dude!
Aye min, that pic was taken a day or two before I made the (patent design ) miracle thumb rest for her.

Not sure if there was a fire she'd be the first out out the door (that would be the Shuker... or the '80 L-1000... or the Pingray... or the ... ) but she's definitely the first one I pick up to play these days. A one-piece 70's mystery Jap bass with an original DiMarzio, £80 off ebay and a couple of days TLC....

Why are there so many copies of Fender basses?
Ou7shined replied to The Dark Lord's topic in Bass Guitars
Look at what the majority of hero players are playing now and have been for the last 50 years. These designs are burned into our psyche... and the designs that fall outside of these standards by too much are considered niche and therefore obtain less of a market stronghold. Also on a practical level, Leo's designs are not too wacky, are actually very functional and fairly ergonomic. -
I'm with swanbrook +1 Gareth
Me too. I thought you were joking about the whole "contact at S&T" thing.
Just a thought. Are thinner necks more susceptable to moving in response to local climatic changes ?
Compared to those of an identical construction... possibly. But a thick neck made of pine (perish the thought) would be more susceptible than a thin one of carbon fibre say.
Yes. I have one body almost built entirely from the stuff
It all adds to the tone.
-
It depends very much on your tr. Where it is set and how thick it is - some are almost twice the height of others. You risk taking the back of the neck so thin that your tr has very little to act against and will punch through when it is tensioning. I agree that a rasp/surform will be overkill on an already profiled neck and that a spoke-shave then a vertically held blade would be better. "It's difficult to put wood back once it's gone". Never heard of glue Billy?
....The only other suggestion would be to go to a reputable repair guy/luthier ....
A reputable repair guy/luthier has already commented in this thread and his advise was ignored.
Could he have said "kink"?
You of all people should know what a kick at the top of the neck is Matt. Although why the guy said it was common in Fenders (over any other make) beats me.

That tuner on the fretless looks all sad and lonely though.
-
Welcome to the forum. That's what happens when the the rear of the tuner is nipped down tight while being misaligned with the front bush. It's often best to seat your tuners then tighten them up fully once they've had a wiggle and few turns under tension first. Oddly enough, I had a set of Wilkinson's do this to me.
If you can't sort it out with the truss rod, take out the plastic fret fillers and put maple/ash veneer in. If that doesn't sort it then other options are: A new and very thick fingerboard from ebony, pau ferro, gonzales or similar dense hardwood A stainless steel fingerboard on top of the old one. and/or reinforcement using stainless steel or graphite composite rods in the neck.
get yourself a musicman sub,the easy way to do it.
Quite simply this.... plus you'll have to wire the pups up in series from parallel to make truly authentic sounding.

Hope you didn't go for the matching headstock.

Encore masquerading as a Squire
Ou7shined replied to silentbob's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
As far as I can see and read its a no name generic bitsa with a decal slapped on it! Looks nice though lol A
That neck is definitely 100% Encore. -
Thats true, but there is the fact that the rod is a long thin piece of metal and it can be depresssingly easy to deform something like that.
Well I guess you know more about it than me.
