Another great, underrated player. As you say, Blues does have a lot of repetitive patterns that even the best players employ, but he does manage to keep it interesting and fresh in each line he plays. Also works really well with the drummer (Chris Layton?) to create a great rhythm section. Certainly not the easiest position to fill, standing behind SRV and laying down the rhythm, but they both do it brilliantly.

Equip the room with the best quality gear that you can afford - that way, you'll be the best practice room around and no one will even think about starting their own to compete with you. If they do, you have the best equipment! I'd also make all the bands who want to practice there sign a contract saying that if they break any equipment, they'll pay for it. You are, after all, providing them with a service, and so being business-like in your actions will not hurt.

Hello all, Basically, I've been using my Hartke combo with a pair of headphones to practice quietly at my house for the last year or so. However, the combo is quite bulky for me to have in the living room at all times, so I'm looking for a portable replacement. What do you guys use? I could play the bass unplugged obviously, but I like the idea of wearing headphones for a bit more volume. So...any suggestions? Cheers in advance, Danny

I don't think writing a bassline is considered as a songwriting credit. I *think* that it's only the sequence, melody and lyrics that are covered by copyright. A lot of session players are paid set fees which are agreed before a single note is played, so maybe you should talk it over with whoever is organising the session to see if you can reach some sort of agreement?

The 1x12 may have an increased midrange though, and you may find that it cuts through better in a live situation.

Hello mate, I've not had any experience with the particular combo you're looking at, but I have played countless gigs with a Fender Rumble 60 combo (owned by my keyboard player actually), and a friend of mine owns the Fender Rumble 100. Both are cracking amps for the money - my Warwick sounded great through the 60, the 12" speaker had a lovely punchy tone and you could hear every note clearly in a band situation. The EQ was also very versatile and I could obtain most of the sounds required by a rock and blues band (similar to your needs) Have you looked at the Hartke combos, specifically the Kickback models? I currently play through the Kickback 12, and it's easily the best solid state combo I've played through. Plenty of power for gigs (with PA support) and sounds great at home too. If you wanted a little more low end, the Kickback 15 is quite similar but with a bigger speaker. I'd investigate these if you get a chance, they're great IMO, but of course you'll only know for sure if you play through one! Hope this helps, Danny

I paid £900 for the same bass used, and it was worth every penny! If I had £800 spare I'd snap it up and use it in conjunction with my current SSII. They really are brilliant basses, if you do decide to bite the bullet and go for it, it will be worth it mate. PS - I'm not the seller just in case you're wondering Danny

Hello all.... Well, I'm just back from a jamming session in my local, youngest person there by about 20 years and I played half the set with the house band! Nerves got me a bit at the start, but then I relaxed and enjoyed every moment of it. I tried my best despite knowing any of the songs that were played, and managed to bluff my way through a set of mostly 12 bar tunes. Felt really great playing with the other guys and definitely something I'd love to do again. So anyway.... Any jammers here? I know back on BW a few mentioned jamming sessions being a bit cliqué-y - what's your local scene like? Cheers for reading, (a slightly intoxicated) Danny

I've played two HB models in the past and would highly recommend them - the Beatbass and the Jazz Copy (not sure of the model name). Both excellent basses that where the sound definitely surpasses your expectations for the price you pay. With a nice setup, straplocks and maybe a new set of tuners, you could have a great gigging bass.
