Ha, I know exactly what you're saying. It was just a bit of a rant that had kind of been brewing for much of yesterday. I'd spoken to the guy on Monday afternoon, and we'd been chatting about things. I mentioned that I was going to be at uni in London yesterday. That's when he told me he'd got a degree too, and how he'd got it in 2 years etc, etc.
Ah, but has he got a BC Composition Challenge Certificate..? That's the real test..!

T'ain't just drummers (I'm a drummer; have you guessed..?). How many times has the PA set off a high-pitched scream as a mic passes too close, or the keys decide to try out his new orchestral stabs without checking his volume..? The list is long (including a bombarde doing a sound check; that sent our whole band reeling back a few metres..!). Brass can get very loud, too. Tinnitus and hearing loss often set in in any case with increasing age (don't ask how I know this...). It cannot be cured, but it can be staved off for as long as possible.

As long as you're happy with what your hard work has brought you, I don't see the problem. If others have a 'short-cut', or degraded version, they presumably won't have your acquired skills. How does that debase your own work..? I doubt that any decent job you'd be after would be 'snatched' by one of these fly-by-night pieces of paper (or, if it was, it wasn't a decent job needing your skills...). Let the children play; trace your own route and ignore the others. It doesn't sound as if you regret having put in all of that work, so you're the 'winner', no..?
I was in Sofia, Bulgaria earlier in the year and went to a store there. This is Music Division. The manager is Boris Raikov. www.musicdivision.bg. Their retail prices are probably lower than UK prices as well.
It can't be that expensive to pop over to there for the day, maybe..?
The ecler is 1600w in bridged mode and i had it in bridged mode............an output spike I'm guessing.
And are you having the glass replaced in the windows and concrete cracks repaired..? Good gracious, we use a 200w amp and never get past halfway 'cos it gets too loud..! -
The original question wasn't bass solo, nor solo bass, but using bass as a lead (implies other instruments..?) or melodic instrument (which, by the very nature of its fundamental frequencies it is not ideally suited, I'd say...).

I've posted it before, but here's Mr. Casady pushing the boundaries of bass playing (kicks off gently at 1:30, then goes for it at 3:30...)... http://youtu.be/PyFIBEvNXbM

Overused chord sequences and artistic merit
Dad3353 replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Avoiding I, IV, V and I, V, VI, IV does not mean deliberately being left field and convoluted. How about I, I, I, I, I, I, I etc. for example?
Disco, huh..? As a drummer, I'm all too familiar with the 'One, one, one, one...' Big Beat. -
This, most definitely. Betterer to have tried and failed, than not have tried at all.
Yes, that's what Icarus was told, too.

Overused chord sequences and artistic merit
Dad3353 replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Completely true, however, some songwriters take the most overused, off the shelf chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the masses.
And some songwriters take the most convoluted, left-field chord structures and turn them into dull, formulaic fodder for the elite. -
Very few musicians have the ability or resources to start a rock band. It's why 95℅ of all start ups fail...
This is probably true of all human endeavour, I reckon. There's nothing special about rock groups; it's much the same when forming a slot-car racing club, or looking for figure-skating partnerships. It's in the very essence of experimentation to have, built-in, the possibility of failure. No secret there. There is, however, some reason that folks continue, despite the odds, to 'reach for the stars', maybe because the 5% or so that do pull it off find it so satisfying; at least while it lasts. Too cynical, 'glass half-empty', Blue. All is not instant success, which makes it all the sweeter when tasted. Let the 'youf' try their luck; it's too late, anyway, for old codgers.
Just got word via a Time+Space newsletter that Izotope are releasing Ozone Elements on the 15th November. No word yet as to what it contains but it could be quite an affordable route into mastering. So my question is, what's the difference between mastering and using a something like Ozone or Neutron on the master buss of your track to provide EQ and compression? I seem to be getting on ok with either Neutron or a compressor, EQ and limiter on the master buss of my tracks but this next stage of mastering eludes me completely.
For me, mastering is not really applicable as a concept to a single track. I use it more for giving some coherence across several tracks aimed at a similar support or target audience. When playing a CD in a car, for instance, one would not want tracks to have wildly different volume levels, even if originally recorded by different bands, or different styles. When listening to a classical selection, it would be nice if all the disk had a feeling of 'belonging' together. It involves EQ and compression (and a few other little tricks...), but nothing that can't be done with 'standard' Master track tools. I use mastering tools, though so that my 'final product' has a 'sound' compatible with the genre I'm aiming at. Even when created months, or even years apart, I still want my stuff to have a certain 'polish' to them which enables them to be played together without clashes (well, no more than the original composition contained, anyway..! ). In passing, I take the announced Nectar Elements to be specifically aimed at treating vocals, rather than whole finished tracks. Is there something else I've missed..?

I suppose (not being that much of an expert...) that it's a bit like motor cars. If one changes the make of tyre, or modifies the tyre pressures, then, ideally, as in F1 or similar, one should also set up the camber, and the shockers, and more still. That's what F1 and other stables do, but they're at the ultimate, high-end, 'every last micrometer counts' end of the scale. For mortals, there's no discernable difference, especially the way mortals use their cars (and basses...). Technically (and if one could afford to do so...), every tiny change could be matter for re-working the lot. For my part, I'm of the 'if it ain't busted, don't fix it' school, and once it's set up, I leave it alone. If I decide to change something, I'd look into the matter further only if I came across an issue. In general, I don't. I don't check the camber when I change tyres, either, but don't drive an F1, so...
Surely being able to do this is basic musical skill that should come shortly after figuring out how to pluck and fret a note. Otherwise it's just a question of "monkey see, monkey do" which isn't really music.
If the Terrortones videos are representative; I'd be wary of using terms such as these. Just sayin'; no malice intended.
That said, there is a rather splendid Concerto by Carl Nielsen whose two solo instruments are violin and snare drum!!
It must be admitted that one has a rather more limited repertoire with that combination than with many others, surely..? No-one would deny that fine music can (and is...) composed and interpreted for many instruments out of their 'comfort zone'; there are, however, physical and physiological reasons why instruments have developed as they have. I would maintain that it's narrow-minded to think that it's narrow-minded to blithely label 'people' as narrow-minded. The world is a very big place, and folks do, indeed, have wide imaginations. There is no limit, but basses are less used as solo or lead instruments, and that's it. Why..? Because they're not ideally suited for that role. That's not a cultural mould, it's a consequence of its very nature. Snowballs are not (often...) used for building houses in Africa, either.

Root or fifth (or both...) at an octave above or below can be easily worked in to 'lift' a groove., if done with taste, and sparingly. To hear just what can be done, try listening to the early Hot Tuna albums, with Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen.
Bass as a melodic and lead instrument is as valid as virtually any other instrument. It's people's narrow-mindedness that's the problem. People have preconceived ideas of what an instrument should, and shouldn't do.
Surely within the inherent limitations and qualities of the instrument itself..? Castanets..? Difficult to imagine a symphony with only those, no..? Possible, too, I don't doubt, but not as rich a potential as a grand piano. Yes, solo (or orchestras of...) bass is all very well, and feasible, but it has to be admitted that the range is less than some other instruments. Melody..? Fine.Lead..? Why not..? An ideal choice..? Not so often, I'd say. Limited scope, by the very nature of the beast (similarly with many other instruments, of course...). Just sayin'. Edit: And no thanks offered for the 'narrow-mindedness' (itself a blinkered view, no..?). A pair of breeze blocks has as much musical potential as a theatre organ..? I think not. Stuff is what it is; one can do much, and many have, with all sorts of unusual takes on 'traditional' views, but stuff is what stuff is, just the same. Yes, one can take something away from its comfort zone, but a sow's ear is a sow's ear. Maybe I'm just too narrow-minded, though.
