Well they’re made of different materials, and if voices to be like their decades I’d expect the 60s to be warmer sounding, the 70s to be snappier. Both look great, I’ve played one of the 60s ones and it was a really nice bass, felt great to play.

The Vintage V4 is a great bass, I have the Tony Butler Sig version and it’s a seriously good instrument, not just for the money, just good full stop. The necks are quite chunky on them, and the pickups - certainly the ones in my TB - sound very similar to the Custom Shop 62s that came in Fender US Standards. I’ve not played a CV Precision but I do have a VM77 Jazz and as above, great instrument, I can’t think that the quality of the CV Precision wouldn’t at least match the VM. So I’d be happy with either.

Given your comment, like the deep bass, Precision sound I’d recommend the Squier. When starting out I too loved the Precision sound, virtually all of my fave bassists played them. So what did I do, I bought basses other than Precisions and tried to get the Precision sound on them. When I finally bought one it suddenly clicked, there was what I’d been chasing all along. So save yourself the trouble, get the bass that makes the sound you like. Additionally the Squiers are very good basses, and should you - you will - decide to upgrade later on the CV will be a great backup bass. I have a Squier VM77 Jazz and the quality for a so-called budget instrument is amazing.

Know what you mean, I quit my band at the start of this year as the gigging/touring was getting too much for me and I needed a break.

Blimey, you learn something new every day.

Probably my fave Elvis song, and a good possibility that’s due to the bass line, one of Jerry Scheffs finest.

Sting Fender Signature Model - Who has/had one?

I love the 51s, there’s something special about them, never tried the Sting but am sure that those contours must make them a lot easier to play/wear. -
Just sold a compressor to Hans, good comms, swift payment, advised of delivery, all that is good in a transaction.

A very very late new bass day...and first foray into fives
Lozz196 replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
That’s a good point, Chris. I remember reading an interview with Bruce Foxton - he who plays a 57 style Precision, the ones with the wide necks - and he said he had small hands. Given the rather quick up & down riffing that The Jams work entails that would support the theory of technique being most important rather well. -
I remember recording bass/drums/rhythm guitar in one take and selecting the track that had the best feel rather than the most perfect. Of course if there was a track with both that would be chosen but back in the 80s there was still the thought of getting the best feel to the track (well in sone studios anyway).

Always nice to see a glass half full approach to life 🤣

Difficult times, Ash. Given that Parcelforce have said they do have your item I’d take some reassurance from that. I’ve had similar where an item seemed to roam every street in Coventry before finally getting to me. Giving the guy you’ve traded with the benefit of the doubt it may be he needed cash and just thought he’d be able to move the Stingray on quicker than the Fender (which given it’s now gone could support that). If the bass doesn’t get to you I would think he would have to pay you the money that your ‘Ray sold for. Parcelforce don’t insure musical instruments - it’s in their T&Cs - so he wouldn’t be able to claim from them. So you would need to put in a claim on EBay, given that the ‘Ray sold on EBay he wouldn’t be able to plead poverty and say he had no way to reimburse you. The liability for the (possible) loss of the Fender stays with him for using a courier which prohibits insurance in what he has sent.

Very good indeed

I don’t know about that specific model but I have a VM77 that had Duncan Designed pickups and regular Fender pickups just dropped in, no mods needed.

So, just how many basses do you own ????

Sold Charlie a tuner pedal. Good prompt comms throughout and advised of receipt, something I really appreciate when posting an item.

Currently I have: Fender US Standard Precision x 2 Fender US Professional Jazz EBMM Stingray Am keeping those, I’ve then got the following which I’ll be putting up for grabs once the world returns to some form of normality: Fender Player Precision (buttercream/maple) Squier VM77 Jazz (Black/maple, Fender 74 pickups) Vintage V4 Tony Butler (refin in Oly white) And I’m still considering getting a 5-string.......... -
Not exactly, I’ll always be a Precision player through and through, if I could only have one bass it would be a Precision, no contest. That said I think it’s best to outlay the various points objectively on a topic like this.

As others have said, the classic question, which for me can be answered: The neck on a Jazz is slimmer. This could make it an easier bass to learn on. Precision has one pickup, and a very meaty/full powerful sound. Jazz has two pickups, a more refined sound, and more variety of sounds due to having two pickups. The Jazz can get fairly near the sound of the Precision, the Precision can’t get hear the sound of the Jazz. And finally, both of those CVS are basses I’d have been happy to have as my first bass, and similarly as others have said, go with your gut feeling and get the one that you’ve thought about and really wanted.

The Squiers are very good basses, I have the Vintage Modified 77 Jazz (same black/maple as CV but with pearl blocks not black ones) and the quality and playability is amazing for a so called budget instrument.

As I’m currently working on a different style of music I’m thinking a - hold on to your seats peoples - 5 string may be beneficial. There’s a lot more riffage in the material so I’m debating on this big time, plus the ideal bass, a fiver of my current 4 string Jazz is on here at present. -
Some nice sounds there, Andy
-
I used Rotos for years, never once had a bad string. However due to their less than impressive life span I did a bit of research and many other Roto-lovers recommended Warwick Red Labels (steel version). They’re very similar in sound, and last at least twice, maybe three times as long. Maybe worth trying their nickel version?

Don’t use Parcelforce, their T&Cs prohibit payout on musical instruments.

Yep, looks like some form of dual humbuckers, possibly active, so if a different pickup setup on the bass used, well it could be tricky to emulate it. I reckon you could get nearby with a Jazz using both pickups.
