  1. I started using them as the band I was in did a lot of gigs with provided backlines, and the two I liked best were Ampeg & Ashdown, just that big beefy feel to the sound. Ashdown tipped it both on the weight of the gear, plus being UK based easy to sort any problems should they occur (they didn’t).
  2. Ashdown ABM600 at 13kg? The ABM600 has a preamp valve so not clean/clinical unless used without the valve drive. If wanting to stay with the same brand with cabs Ashdown have just brought out NEO versions of their ABM cabs, two 210s or a 210 & 115 and you’d have a pretty decent stack capable of handling all but the biggest stages - and at that point you’d have monitors anyway. The NEO cabs are about 17kgs I believe, so the whole rig would be 47kgs in three separate pieces.
  3. Not had the Orange, have had the Ashdown and paired with the RM500 it sounded very nice. Being an Ashdown fan as well I’d check the RM112 out first.
  4. Seeing as the one thing that would really bug me if I let it can’t be controlled, tuners at different angles to each other, everything else just slips by.
  5. I find that if the bass line isn’t straight root notes and if I have the tab then rather than trying to learn the whole song at once isolating four bars and mastering those, then repeating til I’ve got the whole song works. But I do agree with the posts above, knowing the chords and knowing the song really helps.

    That is a beauty
  7. Uber cool!
  8. They do make things easier, though - and I’ve learned this to my cost - never buy one with more slots than you have instruments, you only end up buying more to fill them up.
  9. Great review
  10. I think Baloney hit it nicely on his thread, nickel rounds - with eq can do a good approximation of either flats or steel rounds. The expensive but long lasting option for me is Elixirs, or the less costly Ernie Ball Super Slinky, both incredibly comfortable to play. Being a Precision I’d look at 45-100 gauge. Given the pickup placement the G&D to me benefit from having a slightly smaller E&A, balances it out a bit otherwise the G&D can sound a bit twangy in comparison.
  11. There’s one up for grabs on here at moment (not me selling it btw)
  12. Great news, I’ll bet Ollie is very happy
  13. I’m pretty much the same but with the Para Driver, Dave, no matter what I try I just keep coming back to it.
  14. I think I’m pretty much set at present, at some point I might look at getting a 5 string bass but that’s only if the band I’m currently in start doing songs where a fiver makes more sense.
  15. Horses for courses really, imo all of Tech21s gear is great, it’s just a case of establishing which fits best for the individual. In my case, as in my last band I needed a twangy overdrive sound I found that their Para Driver, which has sweepable adjustable mids was the right one for me. I suppose the first thing is, when you used the Bass Driver could you get what you wanted from it? If so then stick with it, however if there was anything you wanted that it couldn’t do then research their whole range, they’re bound to have something that suits.
  16. Hopefully Bill, Phil or Stevie will assist on this, as they have great technical knowledge, but if they fit I really like Eminence Betas. Horses for courses, there may be/probably are better speakers out there but I just really like the sound of them.
  17. Ashdown ABM410-EVO-IV would be my suggestion. Sticks with the same brand and the EVO-IV version is much better imo than previous versions. That said if your current 610 isn’t too much to cart about there’s a good Fender amp & 610 on here for silly money, buy both then move the amp on, got yourself a great cab.
  18. That’s a good point, Doddy. I try to learn the tracks as they were written to improve my playing - done that a fair bit this year. Sometimes as you say, depending on situation the correct line might not work - Whitesnakes Fool For Your Lovin being a good example, on the solo the bass line just gets in the way imo, so I root note it, and let the guitar shine through.
  19. Agree, Hugh is certainly very good, I love playing his (the ones I can actually play) basslines.
  20. Tech21 Para Driver, preamp/DI with regular eq & gain but has sweepable adjustable mids making it very versatile.
  21. Finished it a few days ago. A great read.
  22. Dunno what model/version it was but I used one 810 at a gig and it was sooooo bassy, just a wamph of low end. Had to back lows off virtually all the way, and had to boost hi mids & highs virtually all the way. Only Ampeg cab I’ve ever used that sounded like that,
  23. Yep, Eminence drivers are used quite a bit, think Barefaced use them and their cabs aren’t particularly Ampeggy.
  24. I saw an online tutorial with Slash and he admitted when he got to one part he always ad-libbed it, so he had actually had difficulty in teaching his own guitar part.
  25. This reminds me a bit of when I tried out a bass at the London Bass Guitar Show. I played Warhead by The UK Subs (with a pick of course) and quite a few passers by looked at me in horror, as if that wasn’t what the instrument was meant for.
