1. Bueno I thought they looked cheap and plasticky until I saw one up close, arent they well built!?
2. That's how you play an F# punk style, saves having to learn what the notes are on the other strings are, or tuning them
3. That only works if the neck can take the extra tension though,as brx says the construction needs to be good first and foremost, most basses over a grand have a pretty good neck, some cheaper basses have a great B with 34" but naturally the better necked basses tend to be expensive, this also helps as the electronics are often good too. My double bass is around 39" 105cms?, the neck is stronger than any electric bass but the E string sounds just like an e string to me I like my rays because they are a halfway house IMO, on one hand the B won't bother a dingwall or a Roscoe etc but on the other hand I quite like the timbre of the E on the B string and now favour it over the open e.
4. The B string myth is self perpetuating because most cheap five string basses are less than 35 inches, most expensive 35" or more have a good B string as they quite rightly should. I tried a dingwall directly against a GB rumour, to my ears the GB just had the edge but by an irrelevant amount, they were both great so it would not have been the deciding factor over other differences between them if I was seriously in the market for one.
5. I don't tend to rely on pickup configurations or settings, it's all in the fingers, it really is. With double bass having a massive come back a lot of innovation has gone into electric upright, most people still want a full size DB though.
6. Musicman made "the game changer" it mostly got slagged off on here, it matches your needs quite closely and better still you can save pre set settings too. To many knobs for me I'll stick with the single switch on my stingrays thanks.
7.
Leo Fender made up this testbed during the G&L phase (if the headstock is anything to go by). I think he must have had a few of these 'sweetspot finders'.
Even with that test bed body Leo has spent more time making the sharp edges more rounded than a Rickenbacker!
8. He actually made the first few stingrays wrong with the bridge too far away not allowing enough saddle length to intonate them!
9. Yes I think they are threaded rather than sprung, so the pads are like being on top of what we now know as the thumb screws.
10. Accidently invented the Lakland bridge while he was at it too
11. For the purposes of a balanced thread , Because of my family on the wifes side I regularly attend various Jewish doos and you can be certain any bands involved will be top notch!!, if I was in London or Manchester rather than the midlands I'd be looking to join a klezmer/ Simcha band but I doubt I'd be good enough
12. I'm neither for or against, if I found one I liked id buy it but I havent found the B string to be particularly any better than on a well built 5 of 34", id say they have a better B than my stingrays but no better than some 35" high end stuff without the wonky frets, GB and Alleva etc have nothing to worry about ime/o, like I say neither good nor bad for me overall.
13. Nice work and welcome
14.
OK, time for this pic of his & hers again
The one on the left, not the lefty is identical to my old right down to the grain,I do wonder where it is now
15. I 100% agree with this and do exactly the same too, I was going to respond earlier to that effect, none of the combos mentioned could keep up with my Genz 6.0 and Genz Neox 2x12T (never mind the Shuttlemax9.2 but thats an unfair contest) unaided by more cabs so I really struggle to see the point other than something like a Markbass 1x12 combo with an extra 1x12 for flexibility.
16. Have you been drinking this evening Mr Tractor?
17.
I've had G&L's with no problem from the head design. I thought it was a final mark of Mr. Fender.
It was only put there for legal reasons though, Leo still had his fingers in the Musicman pie at the time too
18. Even with my limited experience I know the others are going to tell you that the depth of the fingerboard should not matter with correct left hand technique and arm weight, trying to grab around like a P bass on a DB or even on an EUB is going to cause you problems IMO, I can't see any other EUB or DB helping that unless you adopt a DB technique rather than an electric bass on its end technique, it will be an expensive way to discover the same issues you had before. I am not saying I can adopt the right technique at the drop of a hat either but I know what I am trying to do, infact if anything I have adopted the DB technique on the elec bass instead As soon as that left elbow drops the fingers close up, the intonation goes to bits, I start to try finger per fret style playing and the hand cramps kick off. This is cup of tea time for me
19. Ha ha thats great news, just remember that in future if you are having problems with a different amp getting the sound you want that it might want raising or lowering, but you know how to do that now, cool
20.
Pete....that has just had me rolling around....lol....very funny.
I aim to please
21.
This is a creation of Olavi Linden from Finland. The guy is actually a violinist and designer of garden scissors, but he also has a small acoustic guitar and bass company and makes some unique acoustic bass guitars and upright basses with a carbon fibre horn inside the body and multi soundhole technology that produces tremendous volume and bottom end. The one in the pictures is some sort of prototype http://www.lindenins...om/history.html http://www.lindenins...instrument.html
They would love me turning up with that at the Dog and Duck!
22. Does anyone know how this gig went down in the end? I tried to google it and got no info on bands, listings or anything at all I am hoping it was better than my last one, you can see why I am now forever sceptical can't you?
