1.
If using a simple passive bass then the number of parts involved is pretty low and it is very easy to get a very nice sounding and great to play bass for very little money. They don't normally arrive like that but the fact that a few tweaks and low cost changes can make a £150 bass great to play proves the point. After that what are you paying for that is really required? More expensive woods - debatable whether that makes it any better Better level of finish - looks nicer but doesn't play or sound better Made in a country with higher labour rates - makes no difference at all Electronics - £10 of pots and wire in whatever bass you pick Pickup - just put the pickup from the £1000 bass into the £150 bass So unless there is actually something technically wrong with the lower cost bass, i.e. the frets are not positioned correctly, then no you do not need to spend anywhere near £1000 for any purpose besides looks.
This is Bollards mate Ok so your average over price fender copy might fall into that camp but the electronics in the back of a GB rumour will be hundreds of pounds, graphite twin truss rods of a custom bass to enable super low action takes time and skill to create, graphite or carbon fibre necks enable a bass to be used in unstable climates without truss rod trouble ( flea went to modulus to get a graphite neck stingray because they would not make one), the people who design and build their own or custom designs need to make a decent living compared to some one throwing mighty mite bits together with a fender logo to finish it off
2. That cunjurs up an image of someone wearing a piece of carpet attached to the bottom of their slippers instead of carpeting their house
3. Pre eb stingrays are brilliant, you can't go wrong, I miss both of mine.
4. As for the action you need to watch Geoffs lessons, probably the right hand technique ones to start with
5. Cool! Yes just file it a touch deeper.
6. No it isn't I agree but that's not what the OP asked is it, leaving it in a bag or taking it to the Sahara desert won't move the string height or the intonation screws so why suggest to the person asking to start messing when they obviously are not a bass tech and all the bass needs is a truss tweak?
7. I disagree 100%, ok if you are searching for perfection and messing with string types as I said before but the op was very happy with this bass as it was, suggesting playing with the saddle heights wont help as the op has confirmed by 1/8 of a truss rod turn
8. Cool, when it starts to feel like a bow and arrow just reverse it
9. I had a year off basschat, hopefully he has done the same, hopefully he will be back soon
10.
I always assumed you were referring to a '77 Stingray.
No, a 79 was as near as I got to a yob Stingray.
11.
I think we can all buy whatever we want, I don't think anyone needs to earn the right to play an expensive bass and you dont outgrow an inexpensive bass.
I know a few players that would not be able to pull off their best licks even on my Rays, id disagree that you cant outgrow an inexpensive bass, thankfully for my wallet my own skills are more Encore P bass than Fodera
12. I'm going the other way, thinking of leaving my amp at home and just using the pa
13. Sorry it was a bit of an in joke if you were aware of the gear ebs freak uses you would have got, I presume Luke was with me How do you get the Ashdown sounds into the in ears then?
14. I don't buy into the idea of fancy gear being used by poor players, most people I know first hand with high end gear are great players, plenty more sh*t players playing sh*t gear out there IMO
15. I like many others used to use two basses at a gig most weekends, one was a Ray of sorts £1350 minimum to £2000 ish depending on which one and at which time, the other was my Bitsa Jazz that I sold on here a while ago just because I only play 5 strings now, it was worth a fraction of the Ray but it did 50% of the gig every time, it was (is?) a great bass
16. I love Brizzle, If I did not live here on Button Moon I would move there full time
17. Thats it, im not saying you should spend it on a bass but I am firmly planning to spend disposable income on toys, for some that could mean a squier P and a set of fancy golf racquets for example. Note the disposable though
18. I dont think he has £4 earphones.....
19. One of my work colleagues dropped down dead last week, he was 52, I have no concept of religion or afterlife etc, I came home that day and booked a holiday, I dont need a holiday as ive just been, I dont need 3 stingrays either.
20.
The other side is, one of my most stunning looking and amazing playing/sounding basses is a Musicman Classic 5....it was not cheap...and they have risen to around £1900+.... I think its worth every penny.
21. I had lunch on the grain barge a few months ago, I presume its still there.
22. No the clue is in my name
23. Milton keynes bowl 1993, I was 15, best gig yet, the sound was epic.
24. I was thinking P basses? I love them, get all gassed up, try one or gig one and the gas is gone for another couple of years. I only gassed for a rick once, had one on loan for a while, gigged it and put that gas in a box with a tamper proof seal on it
25. I never bought anything after the black album
