1. Crazy how cheap our gear looks under the ghetto tent, there is a few quids worth there, the Jobeky drum kit and control modules alone are worth a fortune yet it all looks like crap from a jumble sale because of the shack, my lighting rig never left the van....
2.
You need to make an album called 'Sell Out'...
Ha very good
3.
PS - Does that say Sue Ryder? Basschat have already raised a lot for them by buying ALL of their old bass stock.
It was the first thing I thought, well second after wtf! Actually third because second was "what the f*** is that horse doing roaming around!".
Great charity Sue Ryder, I do stuff for them in my spare time. Well done for trying.
yep im not saying the charity is bad and the organisers were trying their best too.
Ive done some charity gigs which have been fantastic fun, and some that have not, but arguably there was a decent amount of money raised, so I suppose thats fine, as I thats why we agree to help So I guess the question is, did they raise a decent amount to make your effort worthwhile, by the look of the tarpaulins, I think I know the answer, but I hope I'm wrong?
£250 I think.
4.
I must admit that looks hilarious... I now worry about the charity gig we're doing on 4th July....
Is there a marquee provided? Lol
5.
Is it my eyes or does the front of the kick drum say 'Judas Trio'? Divine retribution? Nice basses by the way!
That is our tongue in cheek bit of fun as the band is made of judases (judi judass judas'?) Lol
6.
Can't blame you for trying to do a decent thing but maybe the organisers would have thought about it a bit more if you had charged them something.. I am getting the idea that they maybe didn't respect your effort much which makes it a bit galling. We tend to take a stance that maybe appear to be arrogant to a degree..?? but it is something like, we aren't 'amateurs' so don't treat us as such. This is why we try and sound them out with what they are providing. Something that sorts the men from the boys is Beer festival P.A's, for example. If we spec that and they agree, then we know they have done their homework... Stage size, etc etc ... if events want everything free, then alarms bells tend to ring...sorry to say.
It was a proper home made effort which we knew to be fair but how hard is it to at least find a flat bit of ground and two extension reels? Some charity gigs I have done have been arranged by people I know that provide and mix the pa, very good engineers with great gear those are possibly still worth doing but even then often the gig is poorly attended or it rains.
7.
Good on you for apparently seeing the funny side of it. At least the weather seems to have been on your side.
If it had rained that would have topped it off!
8. So we agreed to a charity gig, it was last night so a sunday, fail 1, miles away, fail 2, meant to be a marquee on site, massive fail 3. Even with a huge field at a football club we ended up on a slope next to the changing rooms where we couldnt be seen, no one was interested in a live band and clearly planned to go home as soon as the match finished regardless of how good or bad we were going to be, utter waste of my sunday night. I have agreed to a charity gig in september that is indoor and local but it will be my last ever im affraid no matter how good a cause it is, I know other musicians who have the same policy but I have been lucky to only do a few each year really, this was my worst gig ever. I cant see how anyone could have made a good job of it?
9. I saw Richard Bona live a few years ago, utterly gobsmacked at the ability he has, do I wish he had been in Queen 30 plus years ago? Nope.
10. Unless you know how to set pedals up well trying to get the same sound in a live gig mix is hard, I cant so I dont, Flea cant but he still does, and I am a Flea fan! Once you have all that shizzle before the DI the engineer is fighting a losing battle before you even begin, clean input and DI then add the pedals to the FX loop and let the engineer mic the amp up on a fresh channel so they can be blended together, almost always ending up with nothing but your Jazz bass and a great PA system giving you a awesome sound and a tad of your amp to keep you happy that dragging them along was worth it If that cab and amp cant reproduce the frequencies you want from them then volume will be an issue also IMO, I really would try mixing your amp and cab with some others from a local basschatter and see what is what, if that Ashdown is still muddy to your ears with a modern Neo 2x12 with a horn well you will be joining quite a few people on here than have decided Ashdown is not for them, likewise if it sounds great you know what santa needs to bring you
11. I use a PA for a band mix, pre EQ on my DI to the desk, middy cutting sound by myself from my amp and a great bottom end to die for out front, I left the ranks of "my sound" and wanting a mic to collect it for a bigger venue long ago. The one thing most MM users will tell you is that almost every venue or recording studio you turn up at with one the sound engineer, will say "cool a Stingray, I always get a good mix when the bassist uses one"

13.
Do I remember correctly that he used a Musicman stingray to record another one bites the dust ? Not that it matters that much, it's just that he is remembered usually more as a P player.
Lots of Ray use from him.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PI3LAgGBxqU A bit of an early pioneer for the Stingray really, lots of the hits of that era were on a Ray.
14. Nobody going to mention the (looks discontinued?) S.U.B 14 which is/was the SUB version of the USA Sterling but a Sterling made by musicman version of the EBMM Sterling or something similar......Lol what a bunch of idiots the marketing dept are My go to bass is a ceramic loaded Ray 5, thats the got the selector switch and pickup of the Sterling (USA ones!) but the preamp of a 3 EQ ray, it weights a shade less than my Transit van I use for work, it was a fretless 2007 model and now has a 2004 fretted neck but I love it! The as new 2011 Alnico equipped one and the stunning Classic 5 with a John east preamp are my backups, not a bad situation really
15. There's a lot more fretless P and stingray on the recordings than people realise if you listen carefully. Check out good old fashioned lover boy for examples of everything said in this thread, brilliant!
16. When you see everyone say "have a few lessons to get you started" it is easy to think how hard can it be?, those rockabillys spin them around and everything! As soon as you actually try and stand with one it all becomes clear that the only way is to have someone physically show you, even the good youtube clips are tricky to grasp imo. Btw Jake im ready for another next time you are up this way, ta
17. Well beedster you know where to come if you dont like it, lol
18. Good stuff, best not rush into the schaller then, I would not have drilled my fb either! thanks
19. No problem let me know either way, saves me getting in trouble with the wife just before we go away! whats your thoughts on the schaller 411? Bear in mind im not the best player in the world, I need a quick gig volume solution mostly blues and slow rock numbers really.
20. I think I want this, has it hit the bay yet?
21. This is my first post for months, as its not far from here count me in please I will bring my Gedo half carved with spirocores on and my Yita-music bow.
22. Tatoos, doubles basses, women in their under crackers, whats not to like?
23. Watched, studied and practiced for tonights practice session. Fitted in nicely around the walking basslines from your toolbox and I am working on similar stuff from the rufus reid book and trying to get chord tones nailed, ma7, dominant7, mi and mi7 are coming together now, thanks as ever Geoff.
24. Anyone after a good gigging combo right now needs to bag one of the sell off Genz contour amps, crazy cheap for a great gigging amp and you can add an extra cab if needed. Any comparable combo will cost double in the shops.
