The AKG D112? I don't even like the sound of them on kick drums...
That's the one. Can't comment on the sound to be honest, worked at the time anyway- although I recall not having the proper mount for it and having to gaffa tape it quite severely. Like I say, a bit of a short notice botch job

Seems a tad high- one for sale in the classifieds for £450 along with some further discussion.

Ouch. Get well soon!

What kind of gig are you looking for? Are you in a band?

The only time I've recorded DB we used an AKG kick mic (D550, something like that? The dead common one) which I borrowed an AKG C1000s. Used the kick mic close to one of the F- holes and the C1000 pointing at the bottom of the fingerboard from a distance. Recorded them to two separate tracks in Cubase so we could play with the levels of each- worked quite nicely for a quick botch job.

I never try and get near my heroes for the reasons outlined in this thread!
That's metal band talk. They seem to have to pick weird tunings and then all tune the same to show solidarity or something. I don't understand why the bass player can't just leave it alone - more so if you have a 5 string.
When you're playing unison riffs with the guitar that have lots of open string pedal notes (like a lot of metal riffs) it can be easier to play a downtuned bass. That said, having done both, I much prefer playing the 5 string.

Bought some cables from him- came as described, very prompt delivery. Would not hesitate to deal with again. Cheers!

"Giant Steps" article in September BGM
velvetkevorkian replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Theory and Technique
Giant Steps is undoubtedly a bit rich for people who have been brough up on a diet of, errr, Pixie Lott... but, PLEASE. can people get the word random out of their vocabularies when discussin gjazz. Its is never random. It can be bad and you may not like it (I don't give a rat's..) but it is NEVER, EVER randon Jazz is a VERY broad church and many of us who visit regularly would suggest that Fourplay just aren't jazz (they told Larry Carlton NOT to play blue notes - how CAN that be jazz ). I'll give you the rest, Major.... but all of that is an argument for another thread. The trouble is that people keep going to listen to the hard stuff without developing the ear required to 'get it'. Yes, most of this stuff is improvised - that, at least, is one variable that is common to most things that sit under the umbrella term 'jazz', but some of it is beautifully written too. Try some Duke Ellington stuff: go to Spotify and look up Johnny Hodges playing ''Isfahan', Day Dream', or 'Blood Count' or look for 'Such Sweet Thunder' or 'And His Mother Called Him Bill'. If you don' t 'get' that, you are dead from the neck up - I am not saying you have to like it, that would be too much to ask, but you should 'get it'. Try Medeski, Martin and Wood playing 'Julia', 'Tequila and Chocolate' or 'Legalise It'. John Scofield playing 'Georgia On mY Mind' or Pat Metheny on 'Don't Know Why'. T'ain't rocket science, guys.
How are you meaning "get it" here Bilbo? Do you mean appreciate the technical aspects even if it doesn't speak aesthetically? -
Well, technically you've got an infinite number of notes on the fretboard, depending on how you want to divide it up. What you're getting at would be a quarter tone, which Wikipedia suggests as follows... "Quarter-tone accidentals residing outside the Western semitone: half-sharp, sharp, sharp-and-a-half; half-flat, flat, flat-and-a-half, another variant of flat-and-a-half". So it could be F sharp and a half or G half flat.
Would you rather do A to B in my mums Micra with her at the wheel or come for a spin with me in my 350Z. Same journey, different experience in a multitude of aspects.
Pics required before I can give a definite answer here I'm afraid.

I had one (bought new) which I subsequently left at someone's house and have never bothered going back for. They sound fine for indoor practice, not a lot of low end (never tried a 5 through it) but solidly built. Unremarkable but definitely usable.

What exactly is a "jam night"?
velvetkevorkian replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
I've been to the one at the QMU and the one at Nice'n'Sleazys, and also one at the Butterfly and Pig on Bath St (?) - they were mainly singer songwriter oriented, unless you brought your own band (which we did to varying degrees). Maybe I'll check some more out anyway. Off to brush up my pentatonics... -
Ok... next question then... does anybody know of any in the Glasgow area? I found a list of what was described as 'jam nights' but they all turned out to be 'open mic' nights which I'm guessing is just singers.
Keep us posted- I'm also interested. -
How much would your ideal bass weigh?
velvetkevorkian replied to pricechris10's topic in Bass Guitars
Ideally, as little as possible. In practice, I play a Conklin that probably weighs over 12lbs. -

LEFTIES ALERT!!!!!!!!!

Now revised to show correctly. Still seems like a pretty good deal though, especially if the Trace Elliot amp it mentions is included. -
I have to disagree with you here. The instrument that you play has nothing to do with your ability or expression as a player. You can be playing blues badly in a grotty pub on a Fodera, does it mean you are a good player? No,it means you can afford a Fodera. If you are looking at the instrument to improve your playing,I'm sorry, but you have a warped view towards music. The technique, the expression, and most of all the music, comes firstly from the player.
I think what he was getting at was that if you buy an expensive bass, you push yourself to get the most out of it- not that it confers some magical advantage. There is a steep law of diminishing returns with electric instruments- I doubt I could bring myself to pay full whack for a Sadowsky, for example, although they're great basses, because I have basses that cost 1/20th as much but can do probably 90%+ of the same job. I've found investing my time in learning to set up my own instruments properly a better investment than going through progressively more expensive instruments.

My band basically built our style around it. Link if you're interested.

The LM2 isn't Class D- it has a conventional (Class A or B or A/B or something) amp with a switching power supply IIRC.
