1. Tasty! Any trades/ part ex's? edit- never mind, I read the first post properly. D'oh!
2. Not tried the basses, but my old teacher claims they make the best Strat copies ever.
3. You can get free lightweight piano and Fender Rhodes plugins here. Not a lot of options but the sounds are usable.
4. Keytar= instant win.
5. You could see if flats for guitar will fit- I just fitted a guitar string on my 7 string with no problems.
6. Cool. It takes a bit of getting used to but is well worth it IMO.
7. I play with "free strokes" (as opposed to "rest strokes", which you're describing above) using a floating thumb technique. I prefer it as it minimises string noise and lets you play faster IMO. If you want to stop hitting the string below you really need to look at how the whole finger is moving and modify the whole technique- keeping the same hand position and just trying to reduce follow through will not work IME.
8. Or, if you like the occasional bottle of Grolsch, take a few of of the red rubber rings that they use on the flip-top bottles and stick those over the strap buttons. Probably cheaper than a proper set and you get beer as well.
9. I always thought it was more of a pinky rest for pick players.
10. I don't bother. I just set the strings to my preferred height and try and use my ears. I did start on DB originally so perhaps my attitude is coloured by that.
11.
My amp head has separate inputs for active/passes basses, and I also usually run through a fuzz and a limiter; are we saying I'd get nothing from adding a pre-amp? I'm just not really sure what they're for.
You would have a lot of redundant features- the preamp would do the same sort of thing as the EQ/preamp section on your amp.
12. Floating thumb normally has less anchorage, so when you play the A string your thumb floats over the E string, it doesn't rest on it to the same extent.
13. If I was paying him a million dollars just to join my band I'd bloody well want him to be spot on every time.
14. Sarcasm detector broken again?
15. Ergo instruments.
16. Fear Factory
17. Well I got the full set of strings set up, tuned BEADGBE with a super light Elixirs set for the lower six and a single .024 guitar string for the high E. Seems to work perfectly- only problem was the ball end was a bit too small so I had to cannabalise one from an old set of strings and run the string through it. Bit of a bodge but seems to be holding, and it sounds great
18. If you're in Edinburgh anyway might be worth giving Stringers a shout and see if they have anything in stock. Last I checked they were quite close to the bus station in Edinburgh, although I would probably call first as they don't hold that much DB stock. I think they try and be a bit more "up-market" than the Violin Shop, in a typically Edinburgh fashion :snob:
19. I'd also be interested- thanks for taking the time Leftybassman!
20.
I think your post answers the question. It seems to me that people who play 4's just prefer 4's. They don’t need any more strings, they don't want wider necks and they think that changing up will be a problem that they don't want or need to deal with. People who play 5's prefer the flexibility. Each choice is personal and valid. 5's are perfect for me now. I own a 4 string bass which I brought first and don’t want to sell even though I might never play it again.
Agree 100%.
21. Boogex. Appears to be a VST effect which models the response of a guitar cab.
22. Unless you want to give these guys some business...
23. Yeah, I'm about 6' and found it difficult to get the bass high enough on the backpack straps to avoid having it banging into the back of your legs while also avoiding doorframes, bus stops, signs etc. As always though, your mileage may vary. FWIW I like having the wheels but will need to do something preventative if I start taking my bass out again- she's been sadly neglected of late.
24. I've not used that specific case, but a couple of points in general- if you're using the wheels, make sure they're not putting pressure/friction on the bass itself- my bass has noticeable chips in the finish from where the rivets that hold the wheels on rub. Also, IME backpack straps are almost useless on a DB case, unless you're about twice my height or play a tiny bass. I've had better luck with a strap that loops around the endpin at one end and the neck at the other- much easier than trying to use the backpack straps. Hope that helps to some extent edit- I think this is the case I have- that supplier is trade only but I ended up paying about the same as the one you're looking at. The Violin Shop in Glasgow ordered it specially for me as I needed one bigger than the ones they normally stock.
25. Are those ear protectors that PG is wearing?
