1. Probably not in time for Sunday, but Bass Direct have a couple of other makes of double gig bag on their website.
2.
I was lucky enough to know the guys at The Bass Centre in Wapping (now defunct). They were nothing but welcoming and when I had to buy something, it's the place I took my cash too. In Glasgow though, had bad experiences with a couple of shops, which I just don't go to anymore. My wife was going shopping and offered to go in there and get a truss rod wrench for a guitar I had. She took the neck into Strung Out Guitars so they could give her the right size. The two women (who it turns out own the shop, were nothing but patronising and nasty saying that they couldn't possibly sell such a thing, no-one who wasn't trained should do the job anyway and that whole guitar should be brought in for a full setup. Apparently one of them used to work in Andy's in Denmark St. Say no more.
Contrastingly, I've always had very good service in Strung Out, whereas Jimmy Egypt (supposedly guitar repairman to the stars) was totally unhelpful and overpriced. Odd isn't it?
3. Your nut spacing isn't related to the bridge spacing- different instruments have different degrees of taper, so you should be able to specify your nut and bridge spacing to suit you surely?
4. Gorgeous body and no doubt a fabulous bass, but what was he thinking with that headstock?
5. Fancy a 7 string? Conklin GT BD sig?
6. At my girlfriend's graduation a few weeks ago, while we were waiting for the ceremony to start, the Uni organist played a version of "Summertime" on the massive Glasgow Uni pipe organ (it was a hot and sticky day). That was quite fun. No idea what the chords were though!
7. Depending on the design, it might. I believe some are not removable- however, I've no idea how to tell whether it is or not without trying it!
8. Definitely something weird with the file- Windows Media Player doesn't like it at all. I d/led it and Foobar 2000 plays it though. Certainly no probs with the fretless as far as I can see- pretty good tone overall IMO (obviously a bit necro but that's to be expected from one mic).
I feel that when i play very very fast the notes get lost easily. During the second part of the chorus (The bit with vocals) I am playing along to the double kick drums, just doesant seem to be cutting through there.
I think this is pretty common- the only solution would be to EQ each differently so they're not competing for the same space in a mix- a lot of metal drummers use a trigger with a pretty clicky sound so their double pedal cuts through, and you can hear the bass in the low end a bit more.
9. Depending on the nature of the truss rod nut, a guitar tech may be able to remove and replace it- I had it done to one of my basses and it cost all of £10.
10. Good investment? I don't really play 4s any more...
11.
Also anything off of the first two Black Sabbath albums!
Do "Paranoid". Its good.
12. A method for 5 string is not greatly different from that for a 4 string IMO- not enough to warrant a whole different approach. What are you looking to get from a method? Technical tips (finger placement or technique)? Ideas for lines? Something else? All of the above? I find it helps not to think of them as separate instruments, and as a result they don't require separate techniques. What you already know about bass still applies, you just have a few extra notes to play with.
13. Conversely, if you want to play Raining Blood with fingers I would say go 3 fingers- it will take a bit longer to get it accurate but for metal it works IMO and IME.
14. I'd get a BassLab doubleneck if I were you.
15. Where abouts in the world are you?
16. I also recall seeing a computer immersed in vegetable oil for cooling reasons- handy if your deep fat fryer breaks and you fancy some chips. Although I suppose that would make the whole assembly virtually unliftable.
17. As long as you're in tune you should be fine. I've played fretless in a metal band before- I didn't notice much sonic difference unless I did something obviously "fretlessy".
18. Alleva Coppolo (sp?). edit- How close we talking? F-Bass do a rather nice take on it which I'd say is pretty faithful.
19. I use Overwaters on my 7 string which I tune BEADGBE.
20. That seems counter-productive- surely you would be limiting your playing in some ways, unless you have a variety of basses with differing setups? I've always set my basses up to suit me, (and as a result don't really like playing many other people's basses) but I like to think when I play it sounds like me, instead of sounding like the bass, since I'm not limited by the characteristics of the instrument.
21. Make sure whatever bag you get is symmetrical- I have a cheapish Ritter bag that looks like its been designed with an offset bodied bass in mind- this means the straps are different lengths and join the bag at different points. I have tried cycling with it, but it always wants to slide to one side or the other.
22.
3) Plectrum users have their feet firmly placed on the ground Rob.
I think something along these lines is probably correct.
23.
Hi, Have had a look at the pic & it looks like there is a LOT of tension in your picking hand. I think a more relaxed approach would be in order? A "moveable anchor" might be a good starting point (go to www.adamnitti.com - there's a lesson page on there regarding plucking technique), or failing that, go to Todd Johnson's floating thumb video on YouTube. There's also a clip on Dave Marks' YouTube lessons about tension in the plucking hand which is well worth a watch. Cheers, iamthewalrus
A big +1 for this.
