1.
Also anything off of the first two Black Sabbath albums!
Do "Paranoid". Its good.
2. A method for 5 string is not greatly different from that for a 4 string IMO- not enough to warrant a whole different approach. What are you looking to get from a method? Technical tips (finger placement or technique)? Ideas for lines? Something else? All of the above? I find it helps not to think of them as separate instruments, and as a result they don't require separate techniques. What you already know about bass still applies, you just have a few extra notes to play with.
3. Conversely, if you want to play Raining Blood with fingers I would say go 3 fingers- it will take a bit longer to get it accurate but for metal it works IMO and IME.
4. I'd get a BassLab doubleneck if I were you.
5. Where abouts in the world are you?
6. I also recall seeing a computer immersed in vegetable oil for cooling reasons- handy if your deep fat fryer breaks and you fancy some chips. Although I suppose that would make the whole assembly virtually unliftable.
7. As long as you're in tune you should be fine. I've played fretless in a metal band before- I didn't notice much sonic difference unless I did something obviously "fretlessy".
8. Alleva Coppolo (sp?). edit- How close we talking? F-Bass do a rather nice take on it which I'd say is pretty faithful.
9. I use Overwaters on my 7 string which I tune BEADGBE.
10. That seems counter-productive- surely you would be limiting your playing in some ways, unless you have a variety of basses with differing setups? I've always set my basses up to suit me, (and as a result don't really like playing many other people's basses) but I like to think when I play it sounds like me, instead of sounding like the bass, since I'm not limited by the characteristics of the instrument.
11. Make sure whatever bag you get is symmetrical- I have a cheapish Ritter bag that looks like its been designed with an offset bodied bass in mind- this means the straps are different lengths and join the bag at different points. I have tried cycling with it, but it always wants to slide to one side or the other.
12.
3) Plectrum users have their feet firmly placed on the ground Rob.
I think something along these lines is probably correct.
13.
Hi, Have had a look at the pic & it looks like there is a LOT of tension in your picking hand. I think a more relaxed approach would be in order? A "moveable anchor" might be a good starting point (go to www.adamnitti.com - there's a lesson page on there regarding plucking technique), or failing that, go to Todd Johnson's floating thumb video on YouTube. There's also a clip on Dave Marks' YouTube lessons about tension in the plucking hand which is well worth a watch. Cheers, iamthewalrus
A big +1 for this.
14. Have to create an account to view it...
15. FWIW I would always get a second opinion on this- I have a Peavey 5 stringer (different model though) that had the same problem, and one guitars shop told me it was knackered and no way to fix it properly; the second one I took it to fixed it for a tenner and replaced the truss rod nut.
16. Looks like its made in the same factory as budget Yamahas.
17. I like Elixirs- I use .40- .125 gauge on my 5 strings. Enough beef on the low end, nice and easy to set up and they last for ages. If they did a high F I would use them on the 7 string as well.
18. Hmm, I didn't know he'd released another. Will have to get it ordered!
19. To my ear, light strings make the higher strings noticeably sweeter, without losing tone on the bottom. That said, I doubt I would go lighter than the .125 on the B string I use at the moment for tension reasons.
20. The basses currently gettig played a lot in my household are my Peavey Dynabass 5 strings, fretted and fretless- dirt cheap but after a lot of work (amateur fret dress, filing saddles, incessant truss rod tweaking) the fretted now plays better than my Conklin 7 string which cost substantially more. Its quite satisfying actually
21. Now I just need to sit down and play it...
22. To be honest I'd be surprised if they did, its a few years old now- I bought it 2nd hand on a previous incarnation of this forum, that was at least 2 and a half years ago. Still, one never knows...
23. Good stuff all
24. Hello all, As I alluded to in my recent thread about nut height, my Realist pickup appears to have given up the ghost- the output is drastically reduced and there's loads of hum. Doing some digging on TalkBass it looks like this is a fairly common issue with Realists, especially on basses with a high bridge and high tension (like mine ), caused by degradation of the piezo element. Has anyone here experienced something similar? Is getting a new pickup going to be the only answer? Cheers Kyle
