Just a little MIDI progress this holiday break. @Chienmortbb made me up another two patch leads, so all 6 outputs are available at the front of my rack. We had some success using the synth for recording our first album - one track has a low E drone, a sort of Celtic pipe sound. That was played live and recorded as a WAV file to share with the studio - so easy-peasy. The album also has a self-penned jazz number on it - featuring a band mate on solo clarinet. I played bass (of course) and recorded it at the studio, but there was also a piano accompaniment. I recorded this as MIDI straight into Logic Pro at home. I tweaked the odd out of time or quiet note then played it back through the synth to record as a WAV. We did the same for the percussion for the jazz tune, recording the high hat, toms and cymbal separately, but next time with the patch panel I'm set up to record them all in one go as my Zoom recorder has 6 tracks. Sorry a very blurry photo from just holding my phone at the back of the rack and hoping for the best. Of course, I could just go straight in the back, but the rack is heavy and has no wheels, and I like having a front panel

When I was involved in recruiting, I hated reading CVs. They are great if you want to judge someone’s creative writing skills but other than that, marginally better than a day old copy of the Sun when the Andrew runs out. A well structured application form made it much easier to compare candidates. I hope that you all get the interviews and jobs you want in 2026.

Well, it's now all set up and the only thing I have to complain about is the strings. They're supposedly D'addario sets, but they were pretty lifeless and the E was a dud with a nasty overtone. No problem! I bought a couple of Warwick Red Label 35-95 sets in the Black Friday sales for £8 each, so I've put those on it, and it sings. The pickups (whatever they are) produce a deep and toneful bottom end, and a clear, but in no way nasty top end. It's a low and fast funk machine now. This will make someone a fine bass. Total spend, £71.

I would say that's OK - band funds not your personal gear - but as @Mrbigstuff points out, it has always been a T2 fail. @neepheid is in Aberdeen and Hogmannay falls just before a weekend. When the party's over and he's sobered up he can have final say. 😊

Listed as a tier 2 fail.

Jazz Bass control circuits (passive) - what works for you?
JapanAxe replied to JapanAxe's topic in Bass Guitars
The VVT control plate arrived yesterday but, despite being used, it is considerably shinier than the relic’d stack-knob plate. I intend to attack it (gently) with some fine wire wool before treating it with acetic acid fumes from white vinegar. I also could do with some raw sheep’s wool from a fence as the lanolin is apparently good for dulling bright metal. -
I can still find new ways to spend more but I do feel like I’m semi pro at it now 😄

Origin Effects BassRig Ampeg B15 Fliptop recreation
Clarky replied to Quatschmacher's topic in Effects
I don't have the Flex any more (a BCer contacted me privately and asked to buy it off me) but, from memory, I think the Fifteen has more tonal variety (including helpful LP and HP filters) and can be driven a bit harder. Its also quieter in operation. Early impressions of Fifteen are that its exactly the preamp/DI pedal I need. Edit: I also had a nagging fear over valve failure with the Flex as I previously owned an EBS Valvedrive which died on me (yes, its easy to replace a dead valve but not during a rehearsal or gig!) -
Mine is coming Monday morning. 😀 Had to pay £55 customs charge.☹️

The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
Stub Mandrel replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
While a few people have genuine reasons for needing a short scale, the number of kids playing long scale on 'influencer' videos shows that they are not needed by most small folk. Short scales sound and feel very different though, and to me they are a lot of fun to play. -
I don't know who originally made it but I've had it a couple of years and added a Thunderbird neck. It's had a Rickenbacker 5 string pickup, so will need re-routing for another shape. Has a KiOgan wiring loom and the cavities have copper conductive tape. Paint job - not good - Halfords finest put on too quickly and not sanded down. Top is finished with a vinyl wrap (which doesn't hide the paint inconsistencies underneath). Great if you want that 'Rat' look.

Last gig of 2025 went to a large WMC, nice and local too! It was a ticket job and fully sold out, we had reservations as flu is still rife but we were happy to see a rammed club full of enthusiastic punters. 3 sets instead of our normal 2 and the obligatory Auld Langs Ayne, we were knackered at the end but it was a cracking night. That’s it for us Glam Lads until the 10th of Jan when we hit the Lion in Cas Vegas. A happy new year to all youse in the BC gigging fraternity.
