NBD: Ibanez SRMD205 Mezzo 5 string. Medium scale
Obrienp replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
Fair enough regarding active basses. I only ever use my active bass in passive mode. Each to our own. The parallel serial switch sounds like a good idea. Worth going after that. I forgot about the pickguard. That should cover up any unsightly holes and rough edges. Just keep in mind what I said about the bridge pickup on the Mezzo. It may be difficult to find a direct replacement of the same size. Worth checking the dimensions before ordering, unless you want to do some woodwork there too. There is no pickguard there to cover up any rough edges. You don’t need to change the original barrel jack socket. You can use the extra ring terminal as an additional ground connection, or just ignore it. I don’t really like barrel jack sockets on basses and they do tend to develop faults. Also I don’t think the sockets Ibanez use are particularly good quality but that’s just my personal preference. I have a Maruszczyk Elwood (Jazz bass clone) medium scale at home. I will measure the front pickup location for you when I get home. I’m not sure if it is in the ideal position but it sounds very good to my ears. -

.125 string, has the zing of a smaller string but enough heft to add weight behind the note. Much, much more importantly than that, the setup on the bass needs to be spot on. Neck as straight as you can get away with, nut cut well. When you string a new string, when just under tension, push down hard at the break angle over the bridge saddle (towards pickup) to create a cleaner break. Makes the world of difference. Experiment with tapered strings too.

I get really good results with lighter gauge (.125 B) Elixers on my MPV-5. I also get a pretty good B tone with the HB flats on my Dynabass. Less happy with the B on my fretless Spectracore using low tension flats. I do use the B up the neck and find, like many on here, have tone and intonation issues above the 5th fret with fatter B strings.

Bit of growl I guess?

I've been taking prescription anti-histamines (not the ones you get in a shop) in hay fever season since I've been a teenager. I do have some special beeswax type thing to wipe inside my nose, along with nasal sprays, etc. I once did a big blues festival type gig in Dundee once while having a major attack. It must have looked a bit strange to any eagle eyed punters to see a box of tissues on top of my rig, with the cover behind the cab half filled with used tissues - not exactly rock n'roll! It was actually a great gig in a pretty big packed venue, but I was relieved to get through it...

Walrus Canvas Tuner lots of bells and whistles I just want it to tune anyway it works and might be the “fastest “ tuner I have used

Another bloody rabbit hole 😄

Not so good. I only occasionally suffer from hay fever but i'm on daily anti-histamines for past 20yrs or so. Hopefully it'll be ok and you can enjoy the gig. Did get a tip from a guy that suffered badly was to rub some vaseline on inside of your nose to trap pollen. Not tried it but he swore by it. Dave

Seems really fair for a solid bass. Now the fun starts!

Ok, for better or for worse, I've done a deal at £900 subject to viewing on Saturday. I'll report back. Thanks to all for your advice, I'm sure I'll be back for more. All the best 👍

Take a large 18" cooling fan and position near you. I use one every gig with Glam band and it does keep you cooler. Dave

Aha! Thanks for that. It's a bit difficult to follow, since Chordify lags behind the song. Nevertheless, that's a big help.

Nice one Daryl, this is more how it should be for you guys. Should be a fantastic experience. Keep us posted on how it goes. Dave

Hey, thank you so much for your answer! I think I hate active basses/guitars and in general I hate batteries haha, that's why I think I'll probably mod this bass to full passive. The spare hole isn't a problem since I can leave the original, unconnected, pot there or maybe I can add a switch for a serial/parallel thing if I decide to keep the PJ config. What about the original stereo jack? Wouldn't it be compatible with my plan if I decided to leave it? Talking about the Jazz/Jazz conversion, keep in mind that this model has the pickguard... that's why I'm not really concerned about the hole aesthetic and I wouldnt refill and repaint it, since it will be covered (with a new custom pickuguard). Of course it's the hardest part of my mod plan...I don't even know where to put exactly the Jazz neck P.up haha -
Ah that's a shame - can't actually see anything - just a tiny blue square with a question mark in it !

Mine are just absolute staple basses now. 3 or 4 tracks on the album and they’re going out live from July Onwards. very, very happy with them.

Its not about the fee, its about the underhanded marketing. eBay provide a service so should be compensated, no arguement there. But doing it in such a way to hide their fees is my gripe.
