Love my p bass. It’s perfect for a lot of songs I do but I wouldn’t mind keeping it downtuned and having another bass for more delicate tunes where I need to move around the fretboard more with my tiny hands. So are there any cheaper basses that have this, or is as simple as buying a P bass and a jazz neck and swapping them around? Are the necks mostly compatible with each other? Wouid prefer a Fender or Squire but open to thoughts about anything else. Budget is maybe around £500 but may mod it for a bit more after the initial purchase.

Ok, I'll admit to making a rookie error. It may have even been an album launch show, I can't remember as it was 25 years ago this happened. I had my wide strap, I had my well known brand strap locks and everything else meticulously installed and set up. Our band were a well oiled machine and were able to overcome most things going wrong in a show, as was the case this time. The screws that used to come with strap locks were woefully short (I am sure you can guess what came next...) So, I sought out a couple of long screws that had heads small enough to fit in to the strap buttons so that the straplock mechanism still worked correctly. Come the night of the gig, our drummer counted off the first song and with an enthusiastic leap in to the first note, the bass flew away from me with the same energy. I'd.... used.... brass.... screws 🤦‍♀️🙈🤦🏻🤦🏻‍♂️🤦‍♀️ I played the rest of the gig on a bar stool that as if by magic appeared next to me mid song!

Then a couple of years ago they brought out the Shorty Violin Bass and I thought, I have got to try that. Build quality is exactly the same as the usual Shorty, so it's just another well-made, mass-produced, Chinese instrument. And there's nothing wrong with that. They've kept the teacup knobs and the (truly awful) tuners from the original bass, but fitted a modern-style BBOT bridge with full-on 19mm spacing. It's ludicrously lightweight, balances fine, and is a complete hoot to play.

I'll see your 'strap locks' and raise you a 'pick pocket'.

It might be the picture, as the saddles are in different places to give some sort of intonation adjustment.

Half of that extra loud is sucked up with modern drivers being half as sensitive as the vintage ones old BMP was using with his 50w amp.

Congrats George! Looks lovely Does your preamp have a weak bass boost? I find I have to boost the bass on mine nearly all the way, while treble is merely a smidge over the centre detent.

According to the general rule*, 500W is twice as loud as 50W. (*all other things being equal)

Got mine today, The setup was a bit of a mess out the box, went to tune up, the A string just gave up, I thought the tuner mech had given up at first, but restrung the bass no problem, the saddles were all over the place, you have to physically have to press them down with your finger the first time you adjust them, fitted the thrust washers today, they do a fantastic job, well worth doing, Just had to adjust the neck the action was a bit high from the factory set up !! I went over all the screws nuts etc make sure everything was tight, construction seems very good, excellent wood choices, 7 ply neck should be pretty solid I am sure, hope the string clamp at the top holds up over time it is basically a big grub screw directly over the string, after all that, I must say it is a lovely bass to play it balances so well , I fitted strap locks, playability is excellent, I basically have the action where I want it , I tried it through a few different pre amps, it actually sounded fantastic through Head Rush MX5 , I downloaded some custom bass presets for that unit and wow, really nice sound just enough grunt behind the preamp models to do the job, very pleased with that , I also tried it through a Dark glass alpha /omega going into a dug Pinnick tech 21 preamp, that again was fantastic, a bit more growl from the bass with that setup, I love playing this bass it sounds very decent, I am normally a Ric/Spector player, for the money it is awesome, solid once set up.

I had a bit of a revelation at my uncle's funeral last year that sometimes when someone dies, along with the grief there can also be a genuine celebration of a life well lived, someone who played the game and won. I think Ozzy definitely falls into that category.

I was never a Sabbath fan as I'm not a fan of that genre of music particularly, but I totally respect their unique talent and sound, and their massive contribution to rock and roll. That said, I liked Ozzy a lot as a frontman ; he just had something about him that connected and reached out to you. Charisma and authenticity, I guess... RIP, Mr Sabbath.

Sticking with the theme of fretless Rays… I met @bernard_beard last night to buy one - perfect deal from start to finish - and it’s clear Mark is one of the good guys Thanks Mark - the bass is excellent.
