Nice bass, but I could do without the bland pot. My playing is boring enough as it is! I've had a few Silver Series Stratocasters in the past and there's something about them that has been better than any more recent Squier I've tried. These were made in the early 90s in the last few years of Japanese production. Some nice modifications on this one too. Good luck with the sale.

I’ve got no advice I can give on fingertip protectors, but I had a similar sensation a few years ago. It turned out to be a deep-lying splinter that was not visible on the surface.

Mickeyboro started following New Chas & Dave book - bargainous New Year deal!
-
Emerging from the London pubs with their own unique combination of ‘50s Rock ‘n’ Roll and Cockney Music Hall, much-loved duo Chas & Dave had hits such as Gertcha, Rabbit, Margate, Ain’t No Pleasing You and Snooker Loopy’; had their own TV series, numerous one-off specials and were the subjects of ‘This Is You Life’; and played Glastonbury, Knebworth, Hyde Park and the Royal Albert Hall. Yet there’s never been an in-depth look at their music - until now. From their tentative beginnings as ‘Country Pie’ and ‘Oily Rags’, via the classic singles and albums of the ‘70s & ‘80s, right through to their triumphant return in the New Millennium, Author and Music Historian Peter Checksfield reviews everything they ever did. Yours for £10 posted. Gertcha!

HeadlessBassist started following How mass produced is mass produced?
-
It is interesting, isn't it? Along with being 'mass produced' also comes that ratio of good ones, average ones and bad ones. I never see most of my old basses again either - I hope that's because they were all very nice examples that played and sounded fantastic. I guess they all found good homes, or several more good homes since my careful stewardship. Also, as I travel around the country picking up various basses for sale, I realise that there are a lot of Bass Players around who don't visit these hallowed pages. But yes, as for your list, maybe they are a little less 'mass' produced than we think. Fender maybe sells 1000 Indonesian Standards for every 100 Player series sales, and maybe those 100 Players equate to 50 American Professional sales, so how many American Deluxe/Elite/Ultras do they sell compared to those 1000 Indonesian Standard basses? 10? Obviously they must sell in much larger numbers than suggested above in order to feed that behemoth of a business, but it starts to give you an idea.

Working in music retail gave me a different perspective. We sold basses from the 3 brands you mentioned, and would pretty regularly re order popular colour combos, for example. It's not like we sold loads of US Stingrays, but I know for sure there would have been several examples of the same spec/colour in the same town, so when you expand that globally it's not insignificant! I do think more people hold onto quality instruments than perhaps we assume; being members of this GAS - inducing den of disrepute (Bass chat) I think warps the perspective a little 😂

Basszilla started following Allen & Heath QU6 2025 version and How loud is a PJB Double 4 Plus really?
-
I use a Rumble 100V3 for small acoustic gigs. Fewer bells and whistles than the PJB mentioned, but still relatively lightweight at 22 lbs and cheaper too. Sound wise it’s fantastic, and will cope with even a not too heavy handed drummer. It’s great having headroom on gigs , and with both acoustic and electric basses in a duo and bands. Best amp I’ve used for a long time.
-
That's a good point about high c string on fretless and eq'ing to account for it. If I plug in my 6er fretless with my normal settings the high c string is exactly as you described and I need to tweak my EQ Dave

Well... I am a bit of a heretic - I have a tone control on my Naim system! The problem with Hi-Fi systems which strive for getting the best out of the signal is that they can also bring worst out of bad recordings. I have one of these attached to my Tape in/output so I switch to that if the sound engineer had cloth ears. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bellari-Audio-Rolls-EQ570-Equalizer-Red/dp/B07PPQ3XWM -

I've already got a graphic equaliser, but I'm thinking of replacing my elderly Nad amp, so was thinking I could get rid of the equaliser if I could get the job done with an amp -

Heresy! It's well known that amplifiers must not have any sort of time controls, as this interferes with the Ultimate Goal, which is High Fidelity, or absolutely accurate reproduction of the original... 😁 I find that the best way to bring out the bass, is to have a large amp and speakers with decent low end extension, but if that's not an option get a graphic equaliser, as there's more control over other affected frequencies. Second best is something like my work Sansui amp, it's got a loudness button and 6 band graphic. Though I rarely use either as it sounds artificial and thumpy, apart from at very low level. -
Thanks and sorry for the confusion but that’s how I’ve got it set up. The issue is that it’s easy to hit the tiny preset button (next to the four red/green LEDs) when using the main foot switch as an engage/bypass switch. I just need to work on my foot technique!
