dub started following Passive Jazz controls and pickup loading on musicman
-
I bought a second hand Squier Jazz bass with passive electronics and I have settled on setting the controls with the neck pickup at max, the bridge pickup down a quarter turn, and the tone down a quarter turn (or a bit more if I want a really mellow tone). What was interesting about this was that backing off the bridge pickup even a tiny bit really boosted the low end. I have been reading a bit about pickup impedance loading so I think I have an idea of what is going on, but this important bit is that I really like the overall tone with this setting. My other bass is a musicman 5 string with a nordstrand MM5.4 quad coil and a John East MMSR pre. It got me wondering what would happen if I added a small resistor to the bridge side of the musicman pickup, would a similar low end boost be achieved?

That GOS track is beautifully put together. I love solo acoustic guitar (as opposed to acoustic guitar solos) but I won't hijack the thread.

Bought a Barefaced One 10 from Andy. He's ace.

RichT started following Gretsch electromatic CVT bass
-
Love the look of it, but oof that's a wide pickup spacing! It'd be interesting to hear what kind of tones it can produce. The only bass I have with anything like that sort of spacing is my Hofner, and they're famously rather specific tonewise.

Pedal bought from Ashdown as I love their signature range - and It's Guy Pratt - who doesn't like guy Pratt ?? But apart from testing it it has sat unused in it's box. So lets find it a great home. Comes with all the "case candy" including the unused rubber feet. Note that it requires a good quality 18v power supply.

petecarlton started following 1974 Grabber G1 up for auction

I know there's a lot of love for these on here (and not a lot for the recent Epiphone version - or was that a Ripper?). Anyway, there's a very pretty one up for auction in Cirencester next week - link here: https://www.i-bidder.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/cotswold/catalogue-id-cotswo10292/lot-483de1ce-d86a-4da4-89e7-b2f900eb6445 Way out of my price range, but the starting price is £1300, with an estimate of £2200 - £2800. Plus all the fees (28.95%). Anyway, if it's your thing, have at it!

Vandolin.
-
Not to harp on but for context there's a 4 string example on here for £575.
-
I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Poor mandolin! Silly man for storing it in a van!
-
Agreed. Slightly frustrating though when it's something that doesn't show up often that I've been waiting on but hey...

chris667 started following Crafter Acoustics.

I was at an open mic a few weeks ago. The Crafter mandolin the chap was playing disintegrated during its owners set! It went out of tune while he was playing and over the next ten minutes or so the top started caving in. I told him to get the tension of, the strings straightiaway. There's a lot of tension in mandolins. Angry little things! To be fair, this one lived in a van so not stored in ideal locations.

Shaft! - Isaac Hayes

I think MartinB has it - if you like the tone of the DI from the amp, just stick a plug in the headphone socket, as long as that doesn't also mute the DI. A very cheap technical fix.
