Not so sure about parting with it.. But I'm reorganizing my gear and for my current needs, I'm not using this instrument at the moment as I also have other 5 string jazz style instruments. I might consider a trade, or exchange, for a different instrument, maybe something more modern, or 4 or 5 strings.. with active preamp This Olinto is a sensational instrument, maybe the best passive jazz 5 I've ever tried.. a very woody and organic voice.. it doesn't sound like the typical maple fretboard instrument.. it sounds very 60's.. it even has a sound that seems older than my 66 jazz!! As for the characteristics of the instrument: Olinto J5, Production year 2023 body: alder maple neck, birdseye maple fingerboard, custom Mas Hino hand wound pickups 34" scale Carbonetti Sunburst nitro finish hipshot hardware weight around 4kg original hard case available a spare white perloid pickguard Other pics and samples available on request price for a new one, around 5200$ plus shipping, plus taxes I set a trade value of 4800€, open to discuss depending on the offers no issues on the bass.. really near mint conditions

Is it just me or is the neck pickup route bigger than the bridge pickup? I was just about to say how nice it is to see a body which could be used without a scratchplate, unlike what Fender do these days. -

I would like to bounce this around to everyone. I have a line6 pod express bass and I was thinking about either a zoom b3 or a ms60b+ and a di for a small pedal board. I'm in no hurry and the line6 might do everything I need. But I'm going to need a di anyway and the b3 could do that. Any insights would be appreciated.

So this arrived yesterday. Haven’t had chance to try it out yet, but if it’s half as good as my internet research suggests, then I think I’ll be happy. All part of my master plan of splitting my acoustic/double bass board from my electric board, as both of my bands move towards silent stages.

I am exactly the same. With one notable exception, I think of everyone here as a chum and hope I treat everyone accordingly. I'm reminded of a local store that was offered a wonderful old Hiwatt stack, by a widow, at a silly price but insisted on paying a fair one instead. I have PM'd sellers in the past to suggest their price is possibly low. As stated, we all have our own (valid) view.

Guess it depends which P bass tone you’re after, and I should have qualified my post by saying I think of the looser, low mid P bass tone. I have a BBP35 and Am Pro PV. They’re in the same ballpark, but the Yamaha is more ‘modern’ sounding. The BB has deeper/tigher lows and more aggressive upper mids. Both are brilliant, just different variations on a theme.

Not sure this "made the original" by Stevie W, but great cover right?

Curious as to which one? I found the P pickup soloed on the Yamaha BB series (PJ) to sound more P than an actual P. Especially the passive ones.

Thanks for clearing that up. IMO having following switched off is the only sensible option. -

I had Strings Direct put together a custom "balanced tension" set of D'Addario XL nickel roundwounds for me and they are great: 42, 55, 75, 100, 135. No issues with the B at all.

Personally from my experience I would not necessarily agree with those talking about the benefits of much thicker strings. They tend to sound thunderous when playing the open B, but the further up the neck you get, the more unusable/hollow/warbly/out of tune they become. You can get great sounding Bs at 118/120. Scale length is part of the equation, and given equal materials a 35" scale and above will give a tighter B, but by no means do you need a longer scale to get a good, tight sound, and some manufacturers these days can get great sounding Bs out of 32/33" scale basses. I find it very much comes down to the actual manufacturers. I would agree that exposed core/tapered strings tend to sound good: the old LaBella slappers and Deep Talkin' roundwounds had much better B strings than their current offerings. Dunlop nickels (the Super Brights and especially the standards) have a very good B despite being low tension. Overwater have started doing strings and their B strings sound great. One more thing - I've also had a great low B sound when using roundcore strings (especially Fodera nickels and the sadly discontinued LaBella Deep Talkin' rounds) - could just be coincidence though.

This reminds of a PMT(RIP) purchase I made online a few years ago for a really nice bass that never made it to my door because...the DPD driver got robbed and had his van emptied of all packages! PMT refunded me immediately but to this day I wonder where that bass ended up and for how much.

Or they're selling it because a family member died and they got it in a will, knowing absolutely nothing about it, and not wanting to. There are more shades of grey than you think.

I must admit I don’t use eBay enough to know of this feature. But with a bass guitar that is enough to put me off because it shows they don’t really know much about the instrument. I then have concerns on maintenance and how it’s been treated under the seller’s ownership, or worse it has been stolen.
