  2. That's not a crossover. A crossover splits the low and high frequencies, sending the lows to the woofer, the highs to the tweeter. That's just a high pass filter, and a very poor one at that. It's what's called 1st order, meaning that it attenuates below its knee frequency at a rate of 6dB per octave, which is totally inadequate. I never use less than 3rd order high pass filters, which attenuate below the knee frequency at a rate of 18dB/octave. That makes them over ten times more effective in reducing low frequency content to the tweeter that leads to high distortion and blown tweeters.
  3. Since I was just inside my BG250-15 adding a tweeter switch, here are a couple photos of the stock tweeter and capacitor (1 μF) for posterity...
  4. If you watch the video carefully they show 3-D images of a neck through. If you look even closer there is a Blue one that has EMG pickups. This is all at the beginning where they talk about the ICON lineup. Since the Ethos has also been discontinued I suspect that soon there will be a neck through, EMG pickups aquiped ICON out soon. And there is no blue ICON Bolt on but there was a blue one sitting there during the video. I hope so since it will be an immediate purchase for me.
  5. what do the 3 knobs on a passive stingray do??
  6. I can't see why it wouldn't work with a neck plate. Countersunk allen heads in stainless are good.
  7. That's sad news, I love Danny's bass on those John Martyn records. I spoke to him briefly in the bar of the Winchester Theatre Royal after a sparsely attended gig there. I think at the start of the gig he acknowledged and spoke about the lack of an audience but the performance he and his band gave was excellent, that was around '92/'93 I reckon. The only other time I saw him live was with Martyn at Salisbury City Hall, I think he did Blue Monk. There was a fair bit of banter between them, probably the main draw for the tour 😄.

  9. Alternative - have a series of bars the width of the strings (plus a bit) running across between bridge and neck, each having two coils. One coil is for the signal, the other is connected to DC to turn the bar into an electromagnet. Power would be applied through a sliding switch - the wiper would connect a single bus bar to a series of segments, each powering a single coil. For added entertainment, there could be more than one slider - there would need to be a bit at the end of the slider's travel where it wouldn't connect power to any coil, so that either one or two pickups could be suggested. I suspect that to get an adequately powerful electromagnet, the voltage to be applied to the coil would be a bit on the high side, but I'm sure that could be catered for and the simple expedient of playing wearing rubber gloves would be a minor inconvenience when this is considered in the context of the next great advance in pickup technology.
  10. I will give them a go. Can you use them with neck plates or do they need ferrules? I normally drill a hole in the middle of the neck pocket to mount the bodies to a painting jig handle and cover with a neck plate.
  11. If Leo got it right with the G&L, why did he persist with that stupid overweight and oversized 4 inline/4+1 headstock when better-designed basses are 2+2 or 3+2, or headless? It's reminiscent of Edward Turner when he was brought back to Triumph to design a 350cc twin to compete with the Japanese and persisted with the vertically split crankcases, so there was no centre main bearing and the crankshafts kept breaking. Admittedly not quite as disastrous, but definitely a poor idea.

  13. Interviews Thursday (a charity) and Friday (a serious company paying mega money) obviously less competition for the former apologies for the thread hijack
  14. Finally, on that note, ive just knocked my drink over my PJ's. It's off to bed in reckon. Lol
  15. I'll add a vote for inserts. I see photos of vintage basses where the neck comes off for inspection of manufacturing codes. I always think that eventually a thread will get stripped. Also, I think you get a better coupling between neck and body if you use machine screws. They're easier to torque evenly.
  16. Oh, I have also now realised, like you, that you can never have too many clamps.
  17. Same as me….building basses is a hobby/side hustle which is good for my up and down mental health and something I am doing as a plan for some extra cash and keep my brain active when I finally retire lol. i haven’t summoned up the courage to do necks yet so just buy Chinese ones and modify/titivate them to bring them up to scratch. I will progress to doing them when I get a neck radius and fret slotting jig but as they say….Rome wasn’t built in a day!
  18. Jack bought my Danelectro. Perfect transaction, great comms etc. deal in confidence x
  19. Thank you! I really like them - to be honest if you're steady with a drill you can do it by hand relatively easily, although I used the pillar drill this time. Probably overkill but hey, I'm not a massive manufacturer just a hobbyist, and I prefer the look of the hex head machine screws
  20. They have a natty white over paisley roadworn to which looked nice. I have abeaten up P which is just enough tho thanks so went for black.
  21. How do you finding using the machine inserts instead of screws on the neck? I have a set and keep meaning to try them but worried the drilling even though I have a pillar drill lol that laminated neck is gorgeous BTW!
  22. Lol. Yes, it's happened again, a story told on BC as old as time itself. Its 23.27, im a few drinks down and doom searched stuff till I found this.... https://www.musicstore.com/en_GB/GBP/Fame-Custom-JB-4-Black-Paisley/art-BAS0012971-000 I'd say a questionable challenge to the real thing, but I dont have over £4k for the real version. Always fancied the paisley tho. The website description is an enthralling enticement to feel polish hand built quality, im genuinely looking forward to it, I know nothing of them but have taken a punt and am hoping for something produced with a little love. Not too much, that would be weird.
  23. Nor could I, writing it 🤣
  24. Round overs done with 1/2in roundover bit, forearm contour with the trusty saw rasp and farrier's rasp. Neck carved the same way, then sanded, danish oiled and waxed. Ash headstock veneer to match the body and a denim blue stain started!
  25. Evening folks, It was very sad to hear about the passing of Danny Thompson today, someone who was a real inspiration for my bass playing. In fact it was watching Danny playing in the Transatlantic Sessions series that got me back to the double bass after being away for a lot time, playing along with those videos taught me a great deal. A player that I much admired not so much for his virtuoso skill personally, but someone who could sit behind and accompany many different musicians across many styles, understated and looked damn cool doing it! Here are a couple of my favourites, please share your thoughts Much respect and thanks...
