I guess it really boils down to how you view yourself - a band member or perhaps a musician who happens to play with whoever gives them work? I’ve played music for a living for over 30 years, and wouldn’t have been able to do so if I’d not been loyal to the bands I was in. It’s different in London I know ( and maybe other big cities ) where there are plenty of great deps who allow lots of flexibility if the situation allows it. But commitment and reliability count for something outside of that sphere, and in my world I couldn’t have constantly been depping my gigs out whenever I’d had a previous / better offer. I’m not saying either option is wrong or right, just not the same for everyone. Similar problems can arise when band members have day jobs that define their availability - being in a band ( earning big money) with 3 teachers in it got to be very annoying for me. (Best bit was when we got some deps in to enable the band to carry on working, and they were better than the guys working in school!) Naturally it all inevitably came to a messy end.

Wasn’t in a great place when I arrived but Dr Gig helped to pull me out of the pit. Very hot last night with the windows and doors mainly shut, and a lot of people outside in the front garden of a small country pub, so it was a bit quiet but those that were inside were appreciative. All good with the IEM’s and the new better boundary mic I ordered after the old one wasn’t working last week w a marked improvement. Very tight on space and some of the videos look very static and somewhat disengaged from those in the crowd but I think that was to do with lack of space (at least I hope so)

I was jesting of course. Nowhere in Scotland can hide from the rain. To be honest i don't really mind the rain. Not been in Pitlochry for many years now. I generally stop at the outdoor adventure centre cafe in Ballinluig on my way North. Its approx half way to Loch Ness for me. Dave

Thanks for that your reply 👍 Well, it's home, very pleased with it and looking forward to the journey ahead. A setup & strings, as mentioned in the above posts are fairly imminent but I'm getting a decent noise out of it, as is.

I always resolve that issue with a shortish one of these. Safe as houses and no drilling or gluing. Caveat: I use a lightweight class D head. I‘m sure you could do it with something heavier, up to a point. However, anything really heavy and tilted would raise an issue with the centre of gravity anyway.

All you have to do is avoid the high st in season. Go north of the Co-Op and it’s always quiet (we’re much closer to Moulin). As to the rain, I have a water butt that says that it really does rain. After the 3 weeks of constant sun, it was bone dry, once the wet returned, it was back to full up in 2 days or less.

Double bass rebuild - not for the faint of heart!

Oh yes, I remember now. -
Now can somebody tell me what that picking style is called. When I learned it (a long time ago) it was called clawhammer with the pinch being the 'claw'. Now i see internet guides callingthe picking that I call 'frailing' being described as clawhammer.

I will say - I adored a blue one I picked up for Walshy in March. It was a beautiful bass. we sold it at the bass show before I got chance to buy it. -
How was your open mic or jam night last night?
tauzero replied to tauzero's topic in General Discussion
Something of a contrast between the two open mics I did this week - Wednesday was all male, minimum age 65, one really good performer but the rest (including me, I'm not a great singer and only an average guitarist) mediocre. OTOH, last night there were (I think) five male singers and six female ones, and I think only me and the host were over 65. Three featured bands - a quartet (female singer, DB, drums, keys) did jazz covers of various rock songs (eg Eye of the tiger, Sunshine of your love, Seven nation army), a sextet (2 gits, bass drums, female singer, female keys) playing straight rock, and a conventional quartet, female-fronted, also playing straight rock. I was recruited to play bass for someone who is an even more recent arrival than me, so I learnt All the small things on the hoof. Also accompanied the youngsters again. The guy who played drums for various artists has just returned from playing Download with his band Jayler, who are playing Glasto shortly - very capable multi-instrumentalist called James Bartholomew who generally plays guitar and sings but can also turn his hand to bass and the aforementioned drums. -
