How was your gig last night?

Got to play Desertfest yesterday. It’s been on my bucket list for years. Brilliant time, really great crowd and atmosphere.

I didn't take any photos of last night, but someone passed on a video of us making a passable attempt at Fanfare. Unfortunately they missed off the initial fanfare, but hit record in time for the important bit 😜

 

Don't ask me what effect that is. It's a combination of a lot of things, I set it up years ago and can't remember the ingredients! I do end on a bottom B though 😄

As part of Oxfordshire Artweeks we did a couple of sets in the garden outside an artist's studio in Charlbury. This was a rare chance to play fretless electric as the performance space was a bit cramped.
A few seconds of one of our tunes can be heard here, if anyone fancies it (I'm hidden behind a bush).

Our last ever gig for the Hendrix/blues band. Just as we have to part ways we’re beginning to really gel. Still, at least we’ve had the opportunity to do it and playing with them has been an amazing experience. We have recorded about 18 songs which will be put out on Spotify in the next week under the name of Move Over Rover. The guitarist is the ghost of Hendrix (I kid you not he was born the day Hendrix died and is steeped in the blues). I’m moving to a different country in a few weeks so the reason for it ending. Although I’m trying to persuade the others to join me!
The gig had a small but enthusiastic crowd who are big blues fans. Always good to play to an appreciative audience. I’ve organised an open air music festival (a small affair) for next week, so we might do a few numbers at that, but the temperatures are now 45c and creeping up so it’ll be fairly unpleasant.

Playing an ex-serviceman’s club, doors open at 7:30, allowing us to set up, sound check, etc. People allowed in at 7! I’ve pretty much had enough of this shit! 🤬 

 

I often wonder about packing it in, this is a tick in the yes column.

Today we kicked off the UK proceedings for World Goth Day (technically this Thursday but I managed to get our event listed) with a cheeky little in store record shop gig. I played mainly mandolin with some mandocello and a bit of a guitar (not bad for an old bassist). 
 

 

We had a pretty respectable crowd and I enjoyed the set. 
 

 

We even had a brief write up locally

If i go to a Blues type band (i don't really class you guys as blues TBH) i tend to watch the musicians ability which you guys have an abundance of talent in your band. Think you'd find yourselves in demand over here. You have a style that bridges blues and popular music that i like.

Just home. Pretty flat gig. We sold all the tickets, but not all the purchasers seemed to show up, as it looked light on numbers. Couldn’t really hear myself well, definitely had a few mind blank moments and our drummer wasn’t on his best. 
 

Another gig next Sunday afternoon/evening, but not looking forward to that as we’re using a dep drummer.

The Piv in Stockingford, Nuneaton has got a great sounding room. The stage is only a step up and plenty big enough. They also sell a very nice cheese and onion cob - we get them as soon as we get there because they go quickly.

 

I took the Sub-5 and it sounded great with the Stinger preamp. I really enjoyed playing it. I did have a tiny crisis of confidence on the doorstep and took my Sire as a backup, as the Sub hasn't been gigged much yet, but the Sire didn't come out of the case. The Sub is noticeably lighter and the neck is slimmer too. I'm really starting to like it. I do need to pop a few washers under the scratch plate though as the knobs are sitting a bit proud.

 

(Note the tasty cob that I scoffed as soon as we finished)

 

It was a little bit quieter than normal as we set up, but did fill out. I guess not everyone is a Eurovision fan, although it was on the TVs silently while we played.

Just back from another outing at the Reivers Sports Bar in Galashiels. A bit quieter than last time but we still had a few folk up and dancing. It was someone's birthday, so the Altered Images song made an unscheduled appearance.

 

This was the first gig since I added the Thumpinator to the pedalboard and it made a hell of a difference. Tone was much more punchy and clear. Deffo money well spent.

Just in from a gig.

I dep for this rock band and the gig was at a pub I've never been to before.

Parking was ace. Double gates into a spacious yard and a short load in through the back door. These small things make a gig so much nicer.

I set up and did a line check. Despite everything being on its usual settings, the bass sound was monstrous. Maybe too loud I thought.

It was a raised stage and hollow as far as I could tell. I use a cab isolator anyway, but the sound was HUGE. 

The opinion from those out front was that it wasn't too loud, so I left things as they were.

Truth be told, I'm not a massive fan of most of the songs this band do. If I never play Long Train Running and Play That Funky Music again, it will be day too soon!

The said, I did get to play Black Velvet for maybe the second time ever and that sounded great.

I take repeated calls of 'one more song' after the encore as a good night. We left it at that.

 

For the most part my signal line was:

Shuker JJ Signature Precision > Darkglass Microtubes 900 v2 'Euryale' > Barefaced Big Twin Gen III

Some effects were sporadically deployed.

We had a lovely gig last night, in what must be a unique venue, The Heron Theatre, Beetham, Cumbria. It's a grade 2 listed building in a small village, run as a charity entirely by volunteers. It serves a large rural catchment around south Cumbria where there aren't really many other venues of its kind. It was sold out well in advance at £15 a ticket. Great people to work with, nice dressing room, free tea, coffee & beer! 

 

We ran our own PA but spent the time to get the sound right and it really did sound great in the room as well as on stage. The audience loved it and many of them told us so. They are booked up June 2026, but we'll get another date after that.

Another Barefaced user. I'm thinking of getting a 2nd hand Barefaced cab but not 100% sure i need it having my Mesa SW210/115 cabs. I like the idea of the 212 cab as its a better fit in my car plus the reviews for BF cabs are all excellent. Alex's vids are very interesting too highlighting many things i wasn't aware off with bass cabs. I might send Alex an email about it to see what he comes back with that would suit my needs. He comes across as a really good guy

Yep they do have a fantastic image between them. Works really well.

I'm not a Goth person by any means but would love to see these guys play.

One of the coolest bands on BC and i haven't even heard them. 😂

Would love to see these guys even tho i'm not a Goth type person. The various instruments used would make it so entertaining IMO.
