I guess each to their own. I am not a big fan of YouTube type ‘entertainment’ but give me Danny Sapko anytime. In my grouch like, cynical way Dubai is the ideal zoo to house these types of vacuous, bling, influencers. All the tax avoiding, money obsessed, shiliing, toxic toss pots can all move there and impress each other.

As an aside, we shouldn't forget that Danny and Mohini are making a shedload of cash out of this spat. I'm not going to begrudge them for that.

Now of course the interesting twist would be if AI puts annoying influencers out of business along with youtube musicians, but in so doing makes the world realise how great live music is with real musicians on a real stage (I think there is a Blues Brother quote about this!) - I'd listen to either Danny or Mohini's bands play live anytime, while their youtube antics are a performance of a somewhat lesser type... mind you I suppose still a performance...

Regarding Mohini Dey being one of the best bass players on the planet, it's more accurate to say she is one of the most bass players on the planet; she plays an awful lot of notes, but it never seems to add up to much. Yet another bass prodigy who never found a way to make meaningful music. Myself, I'd put Danny Sapko way in front of her in terms of being useful on the bass guitar.

 

The vast majority of these bass "influencers" are all fairly similar in that they have formidable skills but lack enough self-awareness to realise that their playing isn't very interesting in itself. They don't seem to have the creative intelligence to make something more worthwhile. And yet they are offering advice.

 

I like Danny Sapko because he has no such pretentious or delusions. To me, he's not part of that world and long may that remain so. I certainly don't begrudge him if he gets some free bass stuff, though.

 

Better than that even, someone should to send him some proper clothes to wear. He is undoubtedly Britain's Worst Dressed Man, and that is quite an achievement considering both Dominic Cummings and John Barnes still live in the U.K. Never mind YT videos about visiting Andy Baxters ect, he could do with a trip to Primark at the very least.

To be fair, it's just an advertising cash grab by all parties. "I'm outraged by this!" Next, post "I'm outraged by your reaction video to my video" video. 

 

However, I would say Sapko has some very reasonable points here and Dey comes across as a blatant cash grabbing div. I'm not sure which of those two statements I'm more curious about my reaction to. 

 

As someone who's never really liked Dey's playing but appreciate the technicality of being able to do it, it somewhat saddens me that it's about nothing more than cash for her and as a result, she doesn't come over well and that's before we get to her other half having the wit and personality of a fatberg.

 

She's done some serious reputational damage to herself here and Sapko is completely right about it.

IMO Danny makes far more entertaining videos than Mohini and her pal. My only suggestion, if you are in the entertainment business (sorry, are an "influencer") and can't take criticism, and cry about people being nasty to you, then you're in the wrong job. Go and hide under a rock!

 

When I was a kid  the people who influenced us were the guys who said, "Do your own thing." The guys playing in the pubs and clubs, Clapton, Mayall, Green, Floyd, Beck, Geno, Zoot, Hendrix etc. I guess I bought a Precision because of John McVie, grew my hair because of the Pretty Things, but my friends, the people I knew and met and hung out with, were my influencers. You could have a conversation with them, real people. It's quite sad that kids today are influenced by the nonsense they see on Social Media.

I started to watch the Dey response video and as soon as the, “See link in description,” flashed up, within a few seconds, any kind high ground of integrity was ceded. I didn’t last long beyond that.

It does seem the better connected we become online the more isolated everyone is in reality. It was brought up in a meeting my old company had regarding AI reliance and was shrugged off by upper management.

 

Regarding the torrent of crap content. If people keep watching and discussing it, creators won’t stop making it! What worries me is no one seems to want them to.

Somewhat hurt response? Somewhat calculated, more like. Little to no make-up and, most unusually for her, no flesh on display (Danny jibed at her making videos in her underwear). Yes, she's an exceptional musician. She's also a grade A grifter - the amount of product placement in the video she and the boyfriend made that Danny went to town on was ridiculous.

I think the thing I like about Danny is beyond the brash Yorkshire humour is a genuine love for music. I do enjoy his deep dives into some of the ridiculous stuff that’s happening in the music industry, glad someone’s talking about it and not dancing around the subject.

I first saw/ heard Danny Sapko demonstrating various basses on YT on behalf of Gear4Music. I remember being impressed with his playing, especially because his style of playing actually lets you hear what a bass sounds like. It might sound simple but it's a trick that eludes so many other would-be equipment demos. A four minute double thumping slap and tap fest doesn't really tell me much. And he was wearing proper clothes.

Before I read this thread, I knew his name but nothing else about him.

Based on the two videos people have linked, I think he's funny & makes some good points and Mohini (sp?) and her feller are insufferable twunts.


I can see his style might turn some people off (See also: Jimmy Carr, Peter Kay, Stewart Lee etc) but I like his shtick.

ETA: I'm not going to comment on his dress sense... I've worn many, much worse outfits

Agreed 100% - when I watch a gear demo I want to hear what the instrument/pedal/amp does and sounds like, not how fast and pointlessly the reviewer can play.

I'm neved sure how real any of these influencer on influencer spats are.

 

Reminds me of the Twitter 'beefs' of around a decade ago where celebs would insult each other on social media with the result of all parties getting some free publicity from the inevitable ensuing media attention.

 

I'm not suggesting it's that cynical in this case but I doubt either Mohini Dey or Danny Sapko is too devasted at the thought of all the potential new content  they might generate from their 'conflict'.

There is a separate thread about AI, probably loads of Rick Beato content.

 

But she is right, not because it's better, but because it's easy for people to use than spend a lifetime becoming an expert musician. 

 

It won't matter because pretty soon music tracks will all be 30 seconds long in the same way as songs reduced down to 3 minutes in the 60s. 

 

And when no one knows how to play instruments we will be worse off.
