Desert Island Discs (Sort Of)

Recommended Posts

With apologies to leftybassman392 who started a proper eight single tracks thread in May this is more DESSERT island discs because I want to have my cake and eat it!

Rather than individual tracks here are eight albums I could happily be cast away with.

This is a current selection and is quite likely to change with the wind

In no particular order but all with personal significance:

Renaissance - A Song For All Seasons
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Rush - Farewell To Kings
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Rainbow - Rising
Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Deep Purple - Made In Japan
Pendulum - Live At Brixton Academy

As I’m well and truly bending the rules here my book of choice would be M John Harrison’s Kefahuchi Tract Trilogy (Light, Nova Swing and Empty Space) bound as a single volume.

My final cheat is, as a luxury item, to be able to include a portable music device loaded with all the classical stuff I like.

I'm with you on M John Harrison. A great writer.

For the albums...
Richard and Linda Thompson, 'I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight'.
Wire, 'Chairs Missing'.
Magazine, 'Real Life'.
Television, 'Marquee Moon'.
Palace Music, 'Arise Therefore'.
The Mutton Birds, 'Envy Of Angels'.
Talking Heads, 'Stop Making Sense'.
3 Mustaphas 3, 'Heart Of Uncle'.

Luxury item... trombone. I can't play the thing worth a damn, and there'd be nobody there to laugh.

Albums:

Rush - Exit Stage Left (fantastic tracks - apart from YYZ which I can't stand).
Tom Waits - Orphans: Bawlers, Brawlers & Bastards (brilliant collection of songs).
Steely Dan - Citizen 1972-80 (sheer class which has kept me entertained for decades).
U2 - Achtung Baby (my favourite U2 album).
David Bowie - Five Years set (classic early Bowie which still sounds inspirational).
Beatles - stereo remastered set (the standard to which everything else is compared).
Peter Gabriel - Secret World Live (one of the best live albums ever made).
The Who - Hits 50 (just so I can get most of my favourite Who tracks on one set).

For a book - Tom Wolfe - Bonfire Of The Vanities (I've read this book over and over. In fact, I think I'll do so again).

Luxury item - my Martin HD28VS acoustic guitar.

Level 42 - World Machine.
Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings.

+1 for Scoundrel Days, fantastic album from an underrated and unfairly written-off band.

Nik Kershaw - 15 Minutes
Mike Stern - Between The Lines
Threshold - Dead Reckoning
Seth Lakeman - Freedom Fields
Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory
It Bites - Once Around The World
Fish - Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors
Jeff Wayne - War Of The Worlds

In the radio programme, you also get the complete works of Shakespeare (bliss!) and the bible; I'd swap the bible for some Buddhist scripture.

Luxury - ABG and 30 years' supply of strings :D

I salute your magnanimity,Sir.

Here's a bit more bending of the rules:

Having been cast away, what a delight to discover two discs in one case - so it just so happens I have Pink Floyd - Wish You were Here to listen to, too!
And what’s this in my pocket? Why it’s my copy of M John Harrison’s The Centauri Device – stroke of luck there!!

Hmmm....

Richard Thompson - Henry The Human Fly

The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers

Fairport Convention - Liege And Lief

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

Langhorne Slim & The Law - The Way We Move

Echo & The Bunnymen - Crocodiles

Wah! - The Maverick Years

John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett - John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett

Book would be Lord Of The Flies, but I'm struggling to think of a luxury item.....
