Working out what to buy/try?

Recently considering moving onto the cab & head rather than a combo. I currently own a line6 300w and love the ampeg setting. So obviously I want to try plenty of ampegs. However.. which ones? I like the 4x10 idea but again which ones? Which other brands will give me growl/punch as I wish, still be deep but clear? I know the second hand market is the way to go usually and I'm seriously considering it but I don't know what the best I can get for a small band situation is.

So basically I'm not asking which amp/cab I should buy.. tonnes o' those threads already. I'm wondering which I should try.

About me and my band...

We're a 5 piece band, 2 gits a singer, bassist and a walloper (drummer). We play heavy rock mostly with bass lines which vary from high to low pitched regularly. Recently started using a 6 string too. My 300w line6 is definately loud enough.

I drive a ford escort and consequently have a good sized boot on my car.

Thanks in advance,
Rik

Budget wise I'm unsure.. probably upto a grand or maybe just a little over.

Why change it if you're happy with what you've got - you could try lots of things and not get the sound you're already happy with.

I tried the 300w line 6 combo and loved the modelled ampeg sound, I would have bought it if I could lift it and it was a bit louder.

Also think what you can do with a grand..........

unless i missed something, the problems seems to be that what he has isn't loud enough....so sticking with what he has wouldn't really work...

if you like the line6, then what if you switched to one of their modeling preamps, and then a power amp with some sort of cab that didn't color the sound too much?

Good move.
There are a couple of Eden 410 cabs here on BC. Also an EA 410, a Boogie 610, or if you decide to keep your combo, a Boogie 210, to put under it. All good cabs and all will give you a great sound. Then there is a Marbass amp and Chopthebass's GK currently for sale.
Do what I did, buy an SVT-CL and a 410HLF with money you dont really have and you'll be in tone heaven!

(then sell it 6 months later when you're skint...)
That is almost exactly the same as what I did :) (except I sold it about 3 months later for lightweight gear!)
Damn you Ampeg! – why can’t they make a super loud and lightweight all valve monster?!?! I do understand that “super loud and lightweight all valve Ampeg monster” is probably the epitome of an oxymoron.

I reckon if what you have has a sound you like, and is loud enough, you should really stick with it. The only times I have spent money on gear is when i've felt i've needed something. If you just fancy something new, buy a pedal or something a bit cheaper! A new bass would probably make more of a difference than swapping from a good Ampeg model that you love, and a good Ampeg.

OK. My suggestion was, assuming your combo is 8 ohm, to add an extension cab, the Boogie 210 for example, so you get to keep the amp and sound you like but beef up the volume with the extra power at 4 ohm and move more air with the extra speaker area. But personally I'd go with the 410 and seperate amp idea.

Honestly, if you can't find a problem with it then don't change it! Once you do start to discover its shortcomings (which I suspect your forthcoming bass may assist with) then start looking into upgrading it. If you said you didn't like the tone or it wasn't loud enough then you'd be in need of a solution but you're currently trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist!
