Which cab is best? Ampeg, Ashdown, Gallien Krueger?

Im wanting to get a new bass cab, preferably a 4x10 for rehearsals and gigs, I have an ampeg B410HLF at the moment which has a horn problem (see my post in repairs forum). Im not sure which cab to go for from the list below:

Ampeg SVT 410HE
Ampeg SVT 410HLF
Ashdown ABM 410T
Gallien-Krueger 410SBX

Has anyone had experience with these cabs and if so could you please give me an idea of what they are like, volume, sound, build

I have a hartke 3500 head

thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

Any reason why a Hartke cab is not on the list? I had a 3500 and a 410XL and 210XL cabinets that was just fantastic. I would rate the hartke cabs over anything you have listed there from personal experience. The Ampegs I always found quite power hungry and indistinct, the Ashdown a bit midrangy and the GK a little bloated/boxy sounding (all IMHO of course!)

Hi

In my opinion the GK is the best on your list. The RBH range is much better though.
I do agree about the Hartke. I had a Hartke 7000 head running a 215XL and 4.5XL cabs. The 4.5XL cab is fantastic, and is actually quite cheap now. Only downside is the weight. That is one rig I would loved to have kept, but weight just became a problem.

Good luck!

I'd have to agree with Ped, Hartke do great cabs. I couldn't get along with Ampeg or Ashdown...mind you I was a tad gutted when I realised Ampeg wasn't for me...but that's another story :) If you get a chance give some a go, they're rather good!

For an 'all in one' cab solution my 410HLF was great. I believe it goes lower and handles more juice than the others you mention.
That said, it is a beast to get around, even with the tiltback castors.
If shifting it isn't a problem then I'd heartily recommend it, but if moving it is a concern then you might be better off with some of the smaller cabs currently available like the Schroeder/Aguilars. They don't have quite the same stage presence but they are easy to move and match a 410 for sound.

I got a Eden Nemesis 410 cab an year ago and it's been excellent-very sensitive(103 I think) so easy to drive and very light
Nearly new £250 on the bay-bargain
Cheers

I have a long running love affair with the Hartke 4.5XL as many a BCer will know! Absolutely brilliant!! - I also agree with Ped's first comments about your list of cabs.

Tell us what sort of music you are playing /styles etc as it may give us an indication as to what may be best for you. Do you like a dirty distorted sound? or a clear HiFi sound, for example?

First off I have 2 musicman stingrays, I sometimes play through a samsamp bass driver and I have a hartke 3500 head. My main band is sort of punk rock so I want that gritty sound mostly associated with ampeg cabs, but my other band is kind of inbetween gritty and clean, its a bit like Led Zepplin meets the chili peppers and mars volta. If anyone is interest here are both my bands myspace addresses, this might give you an idea of the type of music I play

Just not sure whether to go for a SVT 410E or 410HLF I currently have a B410HLF which messed up after playing 1 gig and 3 practices!! Horn has gone strange, so im not sure whether to get the more expensive version of my current amp. Bit put off by ampeg at the mo but I just cant stop loving that sound. Have you had any experience with the new Hartke Hydrive amps?

Cheers
