OK so his stuff really wasn't everyone's cup of Darjeeling, but you don't release 75 albums by being totally crap at your job. Brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

A lot of outstanding Musicians played in his bands, and he treated them very well.
The late great Derek Watkins did a stint with the JL Orchestra.
Starts with Flugel then tears it up on Trumpet towards the end.

I was privileged to play with him in his early years

With such a big back catalog of arrangements it's entirely probable that the orchestra will go on long after the man is no longer with us, much like Glenn Miller. There are no individuals among the musicians that are specifically linked to that band alone really so they can all change at various times as long as the overrall enemble can produce that sound and there is still an audience out there for them.

Met him a couple of times through work (we put out a couple of live CDs and DVDs). Absolute gentleman, and yes, treated his musicians brilliantly. Had a meeting with him in the Park Lane Hilton prior to him playing the RAH, and he insisted on the whole band staying in the same hotel as him. Also went to the end of tour party in Zwickau and had an absolute riot with the horn players, with Last making sure everyone got very drunk!

The other little thing he did that amazed me was that he allowed fans in to the soundcheck, and once the band was up and playing he'd leave them to it and come off stage to chat with them. What a pro!
