stubass Posted March 6, 2014 Share Posted March 6, 2014 Got a loan of a beautiful g&l sb-2 from a work colleague today and used it at rehearsal tonight. OMG! This thing is awesome! He said he's not selling it but a conversation has to be had! I've got an unexpected show and I'm between (decent) basses so he gave me it for a week. The tone, sustain, feel and action are awesome. The neck is soooo playable, feels jazz like but with a p growl. What are these things worth? It's American circa late 90's early 00's with a pj configuration, solid maple neck, not sure about body but the grain through the transparent red finish looks amazing. Graham Posted March 7, 2014 Share Posted March 7, 2014 I've got a '95 SB2 which I love (3-bolt neck joint with the micro-tilt) It's just got the tone in my head - clear, punchy, mid-range focused that can sound enormous with the volumes up high, but still undeniably a P-bass. I also like the undersized body which reduced the weight and the neck profile, which is somewhere between a P and a J, though closer to a J - if I had enough money I'd order one with a slightly wider neck, but I don't and it's not that far away as it is. Value wise, I paid £700.00 last September for it, though it was a commission sale at a popular bass shop so you may get a better price in a private sale, but this was the only used one I could find. [/quote] The neck is kinda between a j and p, always had trouble with p necks, can't get round fast enough but this ones perfect. Yeah, if I am going to get one, it would likely have to be from the states. Looking at £500 ish with taxes etc. My work mate is definitely not selling me his (wiping away a small tear). [/quote] That's correct, but I assure you, with this bass you don't need one - by varying the ratio between the two pickups you get a lot of tonal options. If you solo the P pickup and roll the volume down low you can get a Motown style thud and as the pickups are so powerful, you still get a usable output. Or, chuck both puckups on full for a massive, agressive style grind and a lots more between. There's certainly more tone options than on say, the USA Precision I tried before buying the G&L. [/quote] And sorry you should be! In my opinion, this is a foolish stance. "Yuk" seems an excessively negative reaction. The two Tributes I have had (2007 L-2000 and 2012 M-2000) have been excellent. I have a USA made El Toro but to be honest if there had been a Tribute version of that, I'd have got that instead. There are many inferior products out there worthy of little more than a look down one's nose, but as far as I'm concerned, G&L Tributes are not one of them. LeftyJ Posted March 12, 2014 Share Posted March 12, 2014 I used to own a sunburst SB-2 with a rosewood board and black pickguard. It was beautiful, I loved the neck profile and the feel of the satin finish, and the range of tones was huge even without a tone control. When I got it, I thought I was probably going to miss a tone control, but in the end the bridge pickup WAS my tone control . Want more brightness and articulation? Dial in more bridge pickup. Very excited. Yes it's a tribute but I have a wife and she has a temper. I was nearly tempted by a modern player jazz but I couldn't get my workmates sb-2 out my mind.
