If the chip only showed a code identifying the owner (similar to chipping dogs), then I guess that would be of limited use.
However, I can absolutely see the pointif thechip/device was able to show its location.

I wouldn't mind a bass chipped with realistic on board amp/cabinet modelling, one extra rotary knob with a click for each choice. It would have to add hardly any extra weight to the instrument and be charged similarly to the East P-Retro.
Oh and a push/pull option for clean bypass.

Give me THAT future. :)

Wasn't this (one of) the things that Tesco have been criticised for, they put these things in non-food goods to track the whereabouts of people who would buy that sort of thing?

I suppose our movements are being tracked by our phones, Oyster cards, why not our basses too.

"Oh, been on tour for 3 months have you? Looks here like your bass hasn't left your bedroom!"
