Rickenbacker 4004 Cheyenne II - SOLD!!!!!!
£1600

As some will have read in the General Discussion section, I bought this bass brand new on the 13th of April this year, only to find that, like 98% of basses these days (especially those with any sort of forearm contour a la Fender, Status etc), it aggravates nerve problems that I have in my arm(s); my medical conditions are pretty well documented on Basschat. I've tried playing through it but it just isn't happening.

So, what's bad for me is going to be good for someone else as they get to pick up the most stunning Rickenbacker Cheyenne II I've ever seen (it's also a much better bass than the other one they had in the shop, and I've since tried another that was nowhere near as good) at a great price.

As you can see from the pictures it's a maple and walnut sandwich body and weighs about 8lbs, so pretty lightweight. The pickups are passive humbuckers with volume, tone and pickup selector and it comes with all case candy and case. It sounds big, big, big, but is also nicely open sounding. It'll do Squire to Zender; if not for the arm issue there is no way I would be selling this as it's one of the very best basses I've ever had. The figuring, both on body and fingerboard, is amazing.

A recent Guitarist review lists the price as £2680 (although I've seen the RRP listed as higher):

Looking at the internet They generally go for anything from about £1999 to £2300 or so. Mine was up for a great price of £1899, although I actually got it a little cheaper. In the hope of not losing too much money and given it's been played for mere hours I'm looking for a sensible offer in the region of £1495. Buyer to collect or to arrange pickup.

Any questions please ask; if you need further photos or details just say. Not really interested in trades although I may, repeat may, consider a Sei or an old pre '73 Ric (just about the only basses I can play these days!).

Having owned one of these basses, i can say that they are huge sounding basses, built to perfection and the figuring on the maple is amazing looking in the flesh, this is a great bass for someone at a steal.

Sorry Thunderbird but I have to keep these 2 4004's I have. ;-) One is a (converted) 5 stringer which is my main bass these days, the other is in BlueBurst which happens to be a colour I really love.

A real shame 4000, I love the contouring on the 4004, it's what drew me to mine, don't get me wrong I love the 4003 but the ergonomics don't work for everyone.

These are great basses with a lot of flexibility soundwise, it cant do a 4003 but if thats what you want the pickups are a direct swap. Good luck with the sale

You do'nt even need to swap the pickups to get a 4003 sound. The HB-1 (pickup) has 4 wires. Just connect 1 coil and you have a vintage 4001 sound. Diagrams are available on the internet to have a switch for dual/single coil, or even the tone knob to gradually adding the second coil.

+1

Really sorry to hear you've got to sell Shaun!

As has already been said, this is an amazing looking instrument, so someone is going to get a real beauty at a great price.

Good luck with everything; the sale, another bass and most importantly, your health!

Thanks Nik, your thoughts are really appreciated. Still really annoyed I've got to sell for the reasons given but unless a miracle happens sometime soon it's just not going to work.

Greenman, also thanks for the thoughts & the day I win the lottery jackpot, it's yours. ;)

Warwickhunt, yes ironically I have real trouble with almost all basses that have proper forearm contours and many others that have any sort of contouring (although most Warwicks seem ok); they really exacerbate my nerve problems. Jazzes and the classic Status shape are the worst. I often wonder if because I learnt to play on a 4001 my body has sort of molded to that shape. For anyone who has trouble with the slab/bound 4001/3, this is the perfect Rick; and don't forget, only 8lb!
