3 out of 4 ain't bad! Besides Michael Anthony is entrenched in Chickenfoot now with Sammy Hagar (who could NEVER replace Dave Lee Roth as far as I am concerned)

Even though Van Halen reached commercial peak with Hagar?

Nothing tops their first album, in my view. Astonishing, original piece of melodic hard rock/metal.

Friday enjoyment for you all;

On the Roth/Hagar thing. I think they are two very different front men who, because of their chemistry with Eddie, made two very different bands. Personally I prefer Hagar era Van Halen, with For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and Balance being my favourite albums.

The band were awesome with Dave or Sammy. I think what happened with Gary Cherone was nothing to do with him, he's a great singer arguably better than either Roth or Hagar technically speaking, but it wasn't the right fit.

I really hope the new album they're planning is something special, otherwise it would crush my lifelong love affair with the band. Time will tell...

Good god almighty. Good old Dave. Ever the professional carrying on in tune despite the fact he must have known EVH was out of tune a probably pissed.

I'm sure young Van Halen can play Mike's bass lines but his backing vocals are what made the VH sound IMO. If I had a chice between VH now and Chickenfoot I'd go for the latter.

Yep, great backing singer, and a good bassist - no point being flashy if you`re playing with EVH or Satriani, just play the holding role - the whole band sounds better because of it.

Love old VH, not overly taken with later Hagar VH, but I do love Chickenfoot.
[/quote]I can relate to this. I've been going back to the Hagar era VH with renewed interest since getting into Chickenfoot though.

Nothing any of them ever do will top Eat 'Em And Smile, however. The laws of physics state it cannot be done.
