Waiting for further input from other moderators, but it looks like the most effective thing to do would be to open a subforum and if it gets really popular we can always migrate it to a dedicated site.

A creepy amount of common sense there. Get yourself a cup of tea and sit down for a while :P

that would be like me going into WHsmiths, looking at the multitude of guitar related magazines... then spotting my oasis, (the lonely bass guitar mag) and finding out half the magazine has guitar content...

i really think we are all equal as musicians, but this electric bass forum with its great info, is too important to start diluting... :)
No, it would be like finding that the magazine instead of 60 pages, it now has 70, with 10 of them dedicated to guitar in its own separate section.

There are plenty of guitar forums. I have been in a few.
I would be interested in a guitar subforum, because of the people who participate. They will be members of basschat who also are interested in guitars, mostly, and that's what would make it interesting for me: the people, not the concept.
No dilution, it could be a subforum just like there's one for effects, or for "off topic".

I don't think it is a necessary addition, but if it existed, I would be glad and use it. I do not have an interest in participating in a dedicated guitar forum any more. But as a subsection of Basschat, sure.

Nice one. Would be good if it could happen...

I'll have a think about it more seriously when I have sorted out one or two things here first. To open a 'sister' site would be much easier than it was setting up from scratch.

Cheers

My personal opinion is that opening a sister site will not be helpful.
It would become yet another guitar forum, populated by the same people who populate other guitar forums.
I personally do not need another one of those.

However, a subforum here, within basschat, could be something different. A place for bass players who also have an interest in guitars.
What makes Basschat interesting for me stems mostly from the members and their attitude. A subforum populated by some of those Basschat members seems like a very interesting one, for me.

That's brilliant! Thanks so much for even considering it.

I agree with this, and would not object to a guitar subforum. After all, no-one would force me to go in there! :D

It's not that it's guitar, its that it's not bass related. There's enough room in off topic to bring it up. I would feel the same about a cars, violin, hamsters or clothes sub forum.

If there's a gap in the market I think it would be a great idea for someone to set one up.

You have your own Double Bass and EUB sub-forum don't you?

Sure that's fair comment. It's all about where you draw the line. Obviously no one wants something none music related. I think double bass and bass guitar are similar enough. I don't think that guitar is. There other subjects that lie closely like PA, music tech, backing vocals etc.... I think they are best placed in off topic.

It is called a BASS GUITAR for a reason, geoffbassist. It is a guitar with a lower register and often, purpose. However, there remains the fact it is a guitar. It is a string bass in electric guitar form. It is related to the six string electric guitar a bit more than it is to a hamster, a car, apparel, and a violin.

As others have pointed out, it would simply be a subforum that you never visit. Not sure I understand the problem.

There seem to be enough people keen on the idea to at least consider it, surely.

I understand where you are coming from. I just think that to keep a website focused and specialist you need to draw a line.

I also get that we could just ignore part of the site that we dont use (like for a lot of people the double bass section). What worries me is that adding a guitar section would have a general impact on the whole.

I don't have anything at all against guitarists. I just love basschat as is :-)

I'm not saying don't consider it, but that my view is against. If there's a big demand then perhaps there should be a guitar section.

This is the objection I don't understand. If it's only visible to existing bc members, it'll be the same bunch of people, discussing a common interest in the same bc tone we know and love. It's not rebranding to bassandguitarchat.co.uk! What's this effect it will have on the rest of the place?

I guess as long as its only bassists talking about guitar and not actual guitarists it's ok ;-)
God forbid we get any actual guitarists joining! :-)

If there's a big demand then fair enough.
Again, I really do love guitar. I'm just happy with basschat as it is.

Ah, but what if guitarists find out about it and then register as bass players thus abusing the facilities? Eh? Eh?
There are people on here who quite cheerfully admit they are not really bass players!
