One of my mates is a massive Morrissey/Smiths fan, so I've had plenty of time to play their songs with him. I was the one who persuaded him to get a guitar so the least I can do is play along while he gives it the big licks on his stratocaster. Like I say, I've never really loved the tunes but I'm always reminded when I play them with him why I love playing music!

I've just had my ACG out brushing up on this bassline. There is a nice section near the end where the bass and drums just play together and then the drums just do a few bars on their own...it gives you a nice space to thump out the bassline and try out any fills you've been thinking of.

I always play this one with my fingers and the bridge pickup on solo, digging in hard over the pickup for a bright burpy sound. Not the usual gritty picked sound of the records but an interesting way of doing it all the same!

I like a lot of the music and the sounds created by the band, but I just don't like Morrissey: his voice, his lyrics or him in general. It doesn't bother me if others find him amazing, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I just will never be 'won over' by Morrissey. If the entire Smiths catalogue was released any of the vocals, I would buy it without question.

The problem with him is that he treats the rest of the band like three stooges. Just watch the video Nick posted, where his is flouncing about the stage like a bloody idiot. He is the person I think of whenever I hear people on this site complaining about idiotic, over-indulged frontment annoying everyone with their antics.

He has the talent to back it up, though, which separates him from the herd of idiotic, over-indulged frontmen who blight all our lives. I suppose he could just stand there like that Gallagher moron... nah, it's been done. More power to him, I say, what he does is unique, more than can be said for a lot of bland, generic soundalikes.

I very much doubt he has a lack of respect for his band..not quite sure where you got that from...? hes a great musician who has come along way.. i agree with Doctor J.. he has character and is passionate and it shows.. Oh yeah Gallagher, possibly the stupidest human being alive...everything i hate about an attitude is with that ermm...moron.. glad i dont have to switch on the tv and see that guy anymore..

they don't sound anything other than English

great lyrics
interesting guitar player
very good rhythm section
high quality tunes
= the sum is greater
+ 1

However I do think that The Smiths are a poor man's Housemartins.
The only thing stopping The Smiths from being a really GREAT band is Morrissey.
Paul Heaton is very much an underrated singer/songwriter and has written songs that are as important and relevant today as they were when they were written
(such as 'Five Get Over Excited' and lyrics like "Feigning concern, a conservative pastime, Makes you feel doubtful right from the start").
However, whilst The Housemartins mixed their clear political views with a rather cynical sense of humour, The Smiths had their messages tainted by Morrissey's awful vocal styles and huge ego.

IMO :)

I would like to add, I am not (in ANY way) disputing the fact that the instrumentalists in The Smiths were fantastic musicians and songwriters. I just feel that Morrissey in The Smiths is like putting dog poo in a Steak and Ale pie. Criminal.

Absolutely +1 The Smiths were like a shot in the arm at a time when the charts were dominated by sh*te New Romantic / synth-pop / proto-House / Hair metal twaddle. I remember being around a friends house one drunken evening; she raved about this new band and played me "Reel around the fountain" - just knocked me out.

Love him or loathe him, Morrisey is a frontman par excellance, and he and Johnny Marr had their finest songwriting moments together. "How soon is now" must be in my all-tine top 5

Was never a Smiths fan the first time around :) Their sort of music went a bit above my head.
However, I have a Best Of Jools Holland DVD where Morrisey and a great backing band are doing a song called "You have Killed me" Which I think is a great song!
