Somebody that doesn't want the commitment of a regular gig and wants a bit of fun to keep their hand in. Depends how off the wall your set is I guess. If it's standards, you'll be able to find players I would have thought. It's all about networking, networking, networking!

The best party/function band I have seen
Well I would bet there are some $100.00 a man bar band guys like me that would like a shot at this type of opportunity. You know, see how the other side lives, make some real money with better hours and working conditions. And were willing to play the game. Am I right? Thing is if your not networked, how do you get a chance at this type of opportunity.I would love the challenge. The function bands over here rarely announce openings to the public. Then for some of us, we have to expect that "look" and age will come into play here. Much more than in the bar band world.
Get your band tight. Get all the gear you need. Get the right image. Get the right promo (basically a sh*t hot vid, a few snippets of pro audio tracks and a few great promo pics) Approach the agents. There's your in. -
We would do this if we needed extra brass for a big gig. It always annoyed me that a trumpet player could just turn up and get paid the same as me without having put in all that time rehearsing the set! AND he used a music stand - WITH BLOODY MUSIC ON IT!!
They don't always have a busy diary - so if you pay well, you hopefully will get some loyalty so when they do (e.g. Christmas when everybody is rolling out the bands with all the extras) you know who they'll play for, even if you aren't necessarily offering the most money. Players like the consistent work and dates in their diary - if you can offer them that, you find you make friends very quickly. -
You might want to look into these (don't seem to be readily available in the UK) - http://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_powerplay_p1.htm theres always the trusty http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_hpa_in_ear.htm too. (just get an extension cable for your headphones)

I wouldn't worry. I never got the Smiths. Or Nirvana. Or Stone Roses... Yet lots of people do. If it rocks your boat, that's great. Doesn't do much for me. It doesn't matter who the player is, if the music doesn't rock your boat, it doesn't rock your boat. I don't like Bakithi Kumalo's solo efforts... unreal playing on Paul Simon's Graceland though.
That's fine, but I'll take the 12K side with a Glee theatre set up. I've been doing the 4 guys knocking out stuff for years and at the local level for years and it will never pay 12K. For those that don't like money this type of top notch function band would not be for you.
And 12k is a lowball figure for a member of a busy function band. The thing with function bands, is that the large lineups rarely get all the gigs. Pitch yourself in the midrange price wise and you'll be working all year. You'll find that the members of the larger bands are usually players called up for the gig and will actually get the majority of the work from smaller function bands. Certainly, I have found my bands to be unique in the fact the lineup is very static... for a lot of bands, you are hiring a bunch of talented deps that are grouped for the show. The big bands are for the Christmas gigs and the wealthy who judge a band on their price. I'm not complaining - I've had some of my most fun gigs at Christmas! As my grandpa told me, cater for masses, dine with the classes. I seem to both cater for and dine in the same company it would seem... -
good choice!

I don't get it. Sorry
And it is one very achievable way of becoming a pro bass player too, if that's what you're looking for.
Very much so. -
The only sensible way of sorting this out seems to be to have a 'straightner' between 'Get Funked' and 'The White Keys' to see which is the "best"...Winner takes London.
I certainly wouldn't limit it to those two line ups. There are some scarily good bands on the function scene... Especially when you get into London. -
I'm looking to enter the IEM game cheaply at the moment to see how it goes. This peaked my interest http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_iem_75_bundle.htm But would I be better upping the funds and going for something like this? http://www.thomann.de/gb/ld_systems_mei_1000_g2.htm I can see the merits for the higher class systems but I need to prove the concept first!
If you want to prove the concept, do it wired first. A lot of people are put off due to crappy rf systems and poor buds. A decent set of in ears are key for bass and a lot of the low end systems don't do a good job in giving you a good low end and smooth top end. Couple crap buds with crap radio and you'll hate it. I guarantee. Ps don't bother with the shure psm200 - they are being discontinued so don't be tempted by knock down prices. They are pretty sh*te. If you aren't wireless on your bass, contact obbm about his cable which carries a bass signal and IEM mix. If you are tethered by a bass cable, it's no big deal having that same cable route carry an IEM feed to your belt. Try a practice with a wired setup and over the ear headphones (I appreciate not everybody wants to do the Paul Gilbert look) - the bass on over ears are generally better than in ear buds but will give you the experience of higher end custom moulds) to see if you want to make the leap and invest. Remember, the key to a truly great monitor mix is a great (pref digital) desk, a great radio system (or wired - nothing beats wired in terms of quality) and probably most importantly, great isolating (pref custom moulded) in ear monitors with at least a quad set up with dual lows). Any compromise in any of these areas will be very noticeable. If you haven't already, read through all of this thread. I believe it's the best source of info on the net about the subject.

Isn't the weak G string an internet myth that was set up by some MM hater/baiter. Haven't we had the same thing about - MarkBass, their heads are the business but their cabs are crap. (I actually think I know how that one started and it wasn't based on how they sounded...) What we do know however, is Ashdown do catch fire (and sound wooly, muffled etc...)

Band Break-Up Issue (Selling and Splitting the PA)

Tongue in cheek..... Can you get a hit man for £63 quid? -
"Kemper"
-
I tried the Kemper units and wasn't sold that it could do a convincing low end on its profiling. It's fantastic with guitars but I would be interested in your results with the device for bass.
-
What's your budget? Must say to get good amounts of bass, it's gonna be pricey for inears.
-
I don't know where all this Rickenbacker hatred is from. Plug then into a barefaced and they sound great.

Is this normal? Scratched truss adjustment pocket
EBS_freak replied to Heket's topic in Bass Guitars
If its a great player, have the tone pot on the bass looked at. Cant be that much wrong with it! Finding a great playing bass is key - although I do appreciate that it's a bit cack that things just don't work out as they should! -
I have 4x near mint condition (few scuffs on the corner protectors but nothing serious - everything else is perfect, no bubbling fur, nothing), special order 8 ohm 2x10 proline cabs from EBS. This enables you to have a highly versatile rig - with a 2ohm amp, such as the TD650, you can run 1, 2, 3 or 4 cab rig - an 8x10 without the back breaking weight. All of the cabs have been kept in a set of quality D2F covers that I had imported from the States - and additionally, I had velcro flaps put over the openings to the handles to keep the handles of the cabs mint too. The cabs really are like new. As for the corner protectors, I have brand new EBS corner protectors to make the cabs absolute mint. I have had these corners as spares but never used them because the original corners are still in great condition and are not anywhere scuffed enough to warrant changing yet. I shall include 8 spare corners with each cab. I haven't used these cabs in anger in nearly two years as I have gone the silent stage route and let the PA do all of the work. I also have a mint TD650 up for grabs but am unsure whether I want to let this go yet - but try me. Will split but would rather sell in units of 2. Looks the bomb on stage!

Problem with all this loud sound stuff is that when you are asking exhibitors to pay such a lot of money to exhibit, they need to do their best in order to make their money back. Reducing the period in which sound can be made reduces the chances of somebody actually making a purchase - especially when everybody is at it full hog in that period. In short, there is no solution. There is no way that I would buy a bass based on what I'd heard through headphones.... likewise, I wouldn't buy an amp without hearing what it can do. Call me pessimistic, but maybe shows just aren't a great idea for retail and making noise. :-/
