I don't think a 1dB change in level is audible outside lab conditions.
It's easily noticeable outside a lab environment although you might not notice unless you're listening for it.
 2. Lots of support here for ears. Am I the only one who doesn't have perfect pitch? Korg GT-6J - ancient guitar tuner Zoom B1on Behringer Bass V-Amp

 4.
No, a watt is a watt. A valve amp and SS amp of the same power will both deliver the same voltage and current into a given load.
Yes, see post #11. They will, but for how long? What I was getting at is the difference between continuous power ratings and burst power ratings. Burst is more commonly used to rate modern SMPS/class D amps. I'm not suggesting it's the only difference but highlighting the impossibility of predicting perceived volume based on power ratings measured in completely different ways.
 5.
why is it that a 200 Watt valve amp outperforms a 600Watt class D?
Their rated powers are measured differently.

A pity about the blurb.

 8. The short answer - a watt is always a watt. The difference is in how long an amp can maintain its rated power output. Some are rated for continuous power (often wrongly called "RMS") while others can only keep it up for a few tens of milliseconds (burst power ratings).
 9. Slightly off track. I've often heard of different keys expressing different "moods". With the tempered scale, surely transposing from one major (or minor) key to another major (or minor) key would not affect the "mood".
 10. "dissonant fifth". I guess we're talking about a very different scale then?
 11. Not sure if this will be useful, but there's a pickup maker in Slovakia who's been around since communist times and just might have some bits lying around. His English is sub-Shakespeare but he manages. http://www.electrosonic.szm.com/ Contact info in small print near the top of the page.
 12. Are you a beginner in amp repair or in electronics generally?
 13.
Zoom B1ON http://www.gak.co.uk...CFWaK2wodAO0AOw Link inludes free headphones! Best £40 you'll ever spend - aux in, phones out, amp modelling, fx, tuner, looper, drum machine. Easy to use, batteries last ages.
Another vote for the B1on. Features for the price are unbeatable.
 14. I appreciate all of the advantages mentioned but I just can't get the hang of string damping Probably just an old brain and not enough practice.
 15.
If your cable is making a difference to your tone - it's faulty!
Or it's too long. DIfferences in cable capacitance are usually insignificant with short cables.
 16. It's a 33% mismatch whether you use the 2 or the 4 ohm setting but valve amps are generally more tolerant of a slightly low impedance load, so the 4 ohm setting would be preferable.
 17.
Behringer and the like don't do their own R&D. They make tributes to other products instead.
Or so the folklore goes.
 18. Are low mass bodies the reason for the other obsession with high mass bridges?
 19. If it increases perceived loudness for the audience, then why isn't it louder for the neighbours. There's either truth or important detail missing from the article.
 20. Another option - Samson SR850 are apparently identical to one of the Superlux models (668?) and get very good reviews. I'm happy with mine but take no notice as my ears are rubbish
 21. Not sure what you're trying to do. Do you mean you want to send the output of an external amp head to the combo's speaker?
 22.
Not for scooping, but for bringing back the lost mid freqs. Tech 21 suggest that yes, turning both bass and treble together gives the effect of raising the mids, although IME thats not the same or as convent as having a dedicated Mid knob.
That works but reduces the output level even more. I found the BDI21 could only fully drive my power amp (1.24V sensitivity) with bass boosted.
 23.
Very apply named.
Brian Cox? Never noticed that before.
 24. If you've got the patience, old pots can often be revived without sprays or chemicals. Gently remove the cover and run the tip of a lead pencil over the track. The pencil is hard enough to remove any crusty stuff and leaves a little graphite on the surface of the track for lubrication. Used to work a treat on ancient radios when replacements were not easily available.
