1. If you don't need the preamp to provide any dirt, then you have more options. Lots of mic preamps/channel strips would fit the bill - although not all have a high impedance instrument input.
2. The passive setting is generally preferable unless the signal you're sending into the amp is high enough to cause OD/distortion.
3. Another vote for a Stingray. Even a copy sounds slightly annoyed.
4. Interesting article about Wilko's resumption of temporary immortality. http://www.newstates...-bloody-annoyed
5.
DIN connectors were quite common on older European gear
Yes, I've actually still got some old hi-fi gear with DIN connectors but I've never come across them on instruments before.
6.
Would it be fair to say that everyone who has replied to this thread lives in the West?
I'm east of Prague - deep in Jolana territory.
7. A pity they chopped and changed between volume compression and data compression without clearly differentiating them.
8. I'm guessing the 5-pin DIN connector is not a midi output.
9. Fender headstocks should have hazard warning lights on them. More suitable for paddling a canoe. I much prefer a tidy little 2+2 headstock.
10. Given the same model bass in 4 or 5 string versions, I'd expect a tonal difference due to the different neck mass/thickness causing different resonant frequencies. Just idly pondering but does this happen in practice? EDIT: If not, why not?
11. I'd expect a 20" radius board to be barely disinguishable from flat.
12. The Zoom B1on, although it has more features than you need, would do the job. It will run off USB power and you'd need only a cable from headphone output on your iDevice to the B1on's aux input. Plug headphones in to the B1on's headphone output and job done.
13. When you plug into pre amp out, the signal to the power amp is interrupted so it, and the cab, are effectively "sleeping". There's no danger in doing this. Running without a cab connected is OK for solid state amps, but bad for valve amps.
14. The 8 ohm cab will be fine. 4 ohm is the minimum impedance you should connect to the amp. You'll get slightly less power with the 8 ohm but the volume difference is barely noticeable. EDIT: The wording in the manual is not clear so you were wise to check.
15. The thicker neck on the 5 will have different resonance. Just a thought.
16. Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing. Not fussed about the song but the intro is sublime.
17. Sounds like a technique more suited to archery
18. Might be worth checking what they want. Rendering in wav will give you a data CD readable/playable on a computer rather than an audio CD playable on a CD player.
19. Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the difficulties but my main point was that "dB" is not a level unit but a relative unit. -10dB relative to what? If using the absolute values dBm, dBu, dBV might be confusing - and I agree that it might be - then why not simply specify levels in volts? Power amp manufacturers often use this convention to specify input sensitivity anyway, and it makes level compatibility visible at a glance. As regards pedals like the Big Muff, it's usually safe to assume that they're designed to connect to an instrument level input so there's less guesswork involved.
20.
Sorry but this is not correct. We have been through this numerous times on the Talk Bass forum years back. We even measured our RBI's output to duplicate Crown's test specs.
A little bugbear of mine - Sansamp specs quote levels in dB and it's not clear if that means dBm, dBV, dBu.
21.
adjust the volume by 3dB to hear the difference between 250W and 500W. It's bugger all.
https://soundcloud.com/dincz-1/3db
22.
Hi Ed, many thanks for the really useful feedback, seems I will have to think again!!
Crown's new Drivecore 2 series should solve this - switchable input sensitivity 1.4V/0.775V http://www.crownaudio.com/en-US/products/xls-1502

No luck with the mp3 attachment so maybe a Soundcloud link will work. This is what a 3dB change in level sounds like: https://soundcloud.com/dincz-1/3db
For example, a 50w guitar amp is rated at 100dB, where a 100w guitar amp is rated at 103dB. Although the Wattage rating is doubled, the dB rating is only 3dB, but the 100w amp will be twice as [s]loud[/s] powerful but only slightly louder.
Fixed
