1. My main bass has a satin finish (black too, which makes it worse) - except in spots where my thumb/hand rests where it's noticably shinier. Should I attack the entire body with some kind of polish and what result should I expect?
2.
Can anyone confirm if its ok to connect a balanced output preamp to an unbalanced input power amp ?
You can but bear in mind that you'll lose 6dB of your preamp's output level.
3. As mentioned, the power won't be equally divided if you use drivers of different impedance. Probably better off using 6 x 8 ohm drivers in series/parallel to give you 5.3 ohms. Your amp will deliver slightly less power than with a 4 ohm load but not noticeably.
4. Made-up past tenses - or at least their spelling: He dove into the river. He snuck out while nobody was looking. He lead me up the garden path.
5.
[sub]When somebody does that inverted commas thing with there hands[/sub]
Them there hands?
6.
Probably no help at all though for the cramp I endured in my calf during saturdays gig.
Ah yes, walking bass
7. How about including current limiting? This could work: http://www.zen22142.zen.co.uk/Circuits/Power/add-on.html
8. Vox Cougar bought s/h in 1970. Still got it but it's under a friend's bed on the other side of the world. Not my photo but just like this:
9. Clubby neck = good B? Just a suspicion, but how do the thinner necked SR's compare to the fence-posted ones?
10. I've used a Behringer EPQ900. My only complaint is the noisy fans.
11. Looking forward to the film and hope it gets off the ground. His daughter Mollie has a decent set of lungs too.
12.
There are two types of active bass too (AFAIK): One has passive pickups with an active EQ, and the other has active pickups also with an active EQ... I believe you can have active pickups without EQ as well... OK, that's three types...
"Active" pickups are really just passive pickups with the preamp electronics built into the same casing rather than on a separate PCB. Same principle, different geography
13. If you ever do need to adjust tone mid-song, it's easier to do on the bass than on the amp. But I agree that amps are likely to have much more comprehensive tone controls than are normally provided on a bass.
14.
Surely, the line and inst switches don't apply to a microphone, when using an xlr.
No, the switch doesn't affect the mic inputs. From the manual: "Note the Scarlett 2i2 has no “Mic/line” switch – the Focusrite preamplifier stage is automatically configured for a microphone when you plug an XLR into the input, and for a line or instrument when you connect a jack plug" The mic channel max gain is shown as 46dB. I sympathise as I have a Lexicon Lambda with 44dB of mic gain
15. If a monitor is good enough for you, sell the Barefaced and have a serious talk with the sound guy.
16. Thanks for all the tips. I think I'll pass on the extreme engineering option Very happy with the Stingray pup but if I can fill the vacant hole with another MM pup and gain another tonal option as a side benefit, I think I'll go with that.
17.
It wasn't even an instrument cable, it was a power cord, from mains to amplifier!
Yeah, I think I'll wait for the wireless power connection.
18. I detect an incipient low-viscosity colonic event.
19.
I once owned http://s1128.photobu...l%201986%20SOLD which leads me to believe that the answer is ... closer than you might think.
Or as close as I think it might I'm a pickup-position convert thanks to the Thingray experiment but wondering whether any specific MM pickup would get me closer.
20. No progress with the Thingray but while wondering about hiding the excavations, it occurred to me that as there's already a vacant MM rout in the P-ish spot, why not drop another MM pickup in there for cosmetics and versatility. How close would it get to a P sound? 21. I read on another forum that two cabs complimented each other.
22.
Switched Speakons exist, never seen one in the flesh though.
Interesting. I just took a look and apparently they aren't airtight http://www.neutrik.com/en/speakon/speakon-chassis-connectors/nl4md-v-s
23.
I do, but tbh cannot be bothered with another argument /coat
There's really nothing to argue about. 16 bit PCM audio inherently has a signal/noise ratio of over 100dB - much better than analogue systems can manage. That's not an opinion but fact. Unless you're talking about 8 bit audio? As for mp3 , it gets an unfairly bad rap. As mentioned previously, almost no-one can tell the diff between a CD and 320Kb/s mp3. After all, the mp3 algorithm was developed after listening tests determined what parts of the signal could be thrown away without anyone noticing. The result is as you'd expect. Admittedly there were some dodgy mp3 encoders in years gone by.
24. When you reach Xmas it sounds like bells ringing.
25. If you're reasonably handy, a box, a couple of resistors and jacks would do the trick. Info here: http://robrobinette.com/HeadphoneResistorNetworkCalculator.htm
