If there was a delete account button it would cause inconsistencies in the site. It would leave threads with parts of conversations missing. Bad idea really.
Not neck-a-celery, I've seen some forums with "No longer a member" on their status line, but the post is still there to be read.
  2.
Do make sure you've got the tipping rules straight in your mind before venturing out into NY bars. Try giving a 10% tip (or even - eek! - no tip at all) to a barmaid and you're in for an uncomfortable evening.
Chumleys still had that US tradition of the house buying you a drink back on every 3rd round. Dunno if it still does that since the reopening. I was with friends when a waiter pulled up my mate's wife for not giving a big enough tip, wanted to know what the problem was.
  3.
Unsurprisingly it's called Chelsea Guitars and it's right next to the entrance to the Chelsea Hotel. I was sorely tempted by a NOS Veleno Guitar they had in the window and walked past every day when I was staying there
It was an ancient but mint 335 that I drooled over for quite a while. Great staff too, loads of chat with a Brit visitor & all that.
  4. Manny's closed down a couple+ years ago - they auctioned off the autographed wall of pics last year. Last I heard Sam Ash was in trouble but assume it's still there. There's a cracking vintage shop near the Chelsea Hotel but I forget it's name.
  5.
I'm sure it's common sense to assume that the shape of the player's body influences the type of bass that feels right to them. That's the whole point of this thread, after all, even if it started as a female-centric topic.
Exactly so; much as I loved my first bass, an EB3, as I grew it looked like a ukelele on me - or felt like it at the time. I know - or knew - two other pro players the same size as me, both of whom only play long-scale basses for the same reason - and one of them only playing Fenders, not so much for the sound but because of the larger bodies in comparison to most others - though he couldn't answer when I said "If that's your only reason, why not use a semi - like an EB2 for eg."
  6. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!!!! Must not use the "This thread is useless without pics" icon, Must not use the "This thread is useless without pics" icon, Must not use the "This thread is useless without pics" icon, Must not use the "This thread is useless without pics" icon, Must not use the "This thread is useless without pics" icon,
  7. Even if you do please don't mention wearing leathers.
  8. Can't remember how tiny Suzi Quatro is, though I met her ex many a time at gigs & he's a big bugger. As a kid I saw a pic of her with her bass stood next to her & there wasn't much of a height difference. Though a diminutive figure and a Grabber* bass don't seem to mix............... * for the pedants among us - it may be a Ripper - I neither know nor care.
  9. Part of the appeal of Bowie is that he's more an artist than a pop or rock star. I remember the same kind of things being said of when he released the "Alabama Song", a cover of a Brecht song IIRC. It was a massive detour from his output at the time or previously - but he did gig it and went on later to release his best selling album years later. A decade ago (??) he created Tin Machine which he said on a C$ show was the best band he'd ever been in, now he puts it down as a huge blot in his career. I'm not expecting that to happen again, but as a senior member of the music industry I believe he's simply following his nose in doing just what he wants to do at any point in his life, with very little regard - if any - like his painting, to how it's received publicly or critically.

I once clicked on the "Member" tab at the header by accident & was surprised at the number of memberships which were created and never used, especially some written in Russian style cyrillic. Presumably that's why members are described as "active" rather than counting them all. There should be an account delete button; some may use it and wish they hadn't later during an emotional flounce but it would be handy tool to have. I had a forum account hacked once, by a complete d*ck-head & couldn't do anything about it because that had no delete option either. The only other option is being banned, which can be inconsistent and to a degree, IME, clique-based - though some mods/admins don't appear to be aware of the effect of banning a member from one part of the forum has on other parts. For eg. Off Topic banning also automatically applies to the Ebay and Technical pages too, there are others but I can't remember just now.
  11.
Most of his jobs come in locally, via word-of-mouth. Old school!
Yeah I get that, so am I in what I do to a fair extent. But as I said - if you use the facility you have to make allowances for problems arising. If he has emails and/or contacts on a PC that he has limited access to for whatever reason, it's not that hard to have everything backed up on an ext drive or a large USB stick. Take that to a mates or internet cafe & send an email to all contacts to say "sorry for the delay, builders in, computer knackered etc". I had to do similar last year when my phone line was down for almost a month due to floods. Hasten to add, I'm not slagging the guy, I don't have any contact or work with him so I've no gripe & it sounds like he's great at what he does. Just hoping he learns from the experience for his benefit & future clients.
  12.
Is he actually alright ? I mean I am quite sure he has pals with the interweb, who would gladly let him use it at the drop of a hat. Or an internet café or a wifi point nearby. Being as he's supposedly such a nice chap, and conscientious worker . It does not seem like him to fall behind with orders and not keep in touch with customers.
That thought crossed my mind too, but it'll depend on how knackered his PC is, if all his contacts are inaccessible on a machine he's pretty much waiting for a phone-call from disgruntled (edit; & genuinely concerned) clients. Maybe it'll be a lesson learned & he'll take steps to avoid loss of contact happening again. In this day & age you can't be just a "face-to-face/phone" operator, nice thought, but if you offer an online facility you have to be able to back it up - or - no matter how undeserved they are - suffer the consequences.
  13. I can imagine it's going to be difficult to be able to describe verbally all of the different tones out there in a language that everyone will take the same way - or even remotely the same way. How many words are there to describe a bass' tone? Quite a list I'm thinking. Would it be possible/permitted to have it as an "audio book" and have as many samples as possible; not so much sample tracks of copyright material but trials of many & various basses in shops (dangle the carrot of a credit on the sleeve-notes?) and/or basses belonging to BCers in your area?
  14.
I honestly can't remember guys. However, on another note, I've an audition for an established function band tonight. Not been with a function band before so far as I can remember.
Fixed.
  15.
Reminds me of Felix Dennis (Publishing Tycoon) saying: "If it flies, floats, or fornicates, rent it. It's cheaper." (Dennis is unmarried and proudly non-monogamous.)
.......... which must be why ships & planes are always referred to as female.
  16. My baby; that's why I had it made............
  17. Looks like it's missing the stamped bit if metal which laughingly formed the one piece bridge saddle. Had a bridge like that on an Avon copy, the saddle is held on by the strings.
  18. For a pot luck worth a try effort Johnny Roadhouse up Oxford Road, past the BBC on the same side, is worth a look. They had a Jazz (ex-Bonehead one of the staff is a mate of his) for months recently, usually some old stuff part-ex's etc. Worth a phone call first.
  19.
I use one of the oak beams
Thankfully not in your new Kit video.
  20.
If I tuck it between my legs can I answer this?

No.
Just throw it over your shoulder like the rest of us have to!
  21. The first cust. review about a Precision replacement sounds promising in that respect, but I don't see anywhere saying it's a direct retro-fit. So like when I replaced a Tele bridge to an ashtray one; I'd have lo-tack masking tape either as accurately as possible to both sides of the bridge to get it centred, then mark the positions of the E & D saddles. Only drill extra holes when you're certain you're right - loose stringing up should confirm that. Use the marks on the tape for position of the new bridge allowing as much forward/backward saddle movement as possible.
  22.
I'm really pissed off about it. The moulded sleeves on the minijack keep splitting and f***ing them up. They aren't cheap either.
Always the 'kin way!!! Had one of them lying around since LAST Xmas when I got my new ones. Binned it just a couple of months ago thinking I'd not need it again - it didn't fit the new pair. You could have had it if it was the right one! Sorry Nige! I've always found high end-ish hi-fi companies helpful; I once asked Marantz for a new battery cover for a remote & they send me the whole new remote. Could be worth dropping them a line? Monckyman's suggestion is a good one too - the extra rubber will protect it too.
  23.
I haven't, but I think Shep has.
.................. using a bit of old Fairy Liquid bottle? ................. well what do you expect, at least I didn't suggest a pair of Val's old knickers... ...... he sleeps in them............... over his head!
  24.
I mean to say , I bought this quality leather (Aria) leather strap about 30 years ago , as I remember for a fiver, and was assured that it would last me a lifetime
To be fair, you're in Scotland and the shop you bought it from was next door to a chippy that did deep fried Mars bars, maybe they had low expectations of how long your life would be.
  25. Might be me being a pedantic git (no change there then) but to me when you get a Fender-esque bitsa made of chosen parts it's more of a "bespoke" rather than a "custom". To me a custom is something like a JayDee, or my beloved John Birch, where even the pickups and bridge is made by the luthier involved. Though the machines and strap studs aren't so it's a case of how far does that need to go? Mine is based on an EB3, more specifically it was based on Jimmy Lea's custom EB3, but that idea didn't exactly work out, but it is what it is.
