Interesting - to me anyway - a few weeks ago there was a badly refinned 60's bass highlighted on the Ebay thread that eventually went for not much. The general consensus was that it was a one-off hand made job that looked unstable, piece of cr*p, whatever. At around the same time I saw a major name player in a 60's promo pic holding a bass that appeared to be identical to it. Someone on Ebay either got a bargain, .......... or a "one-off hand made job that looked unstable, piece of cr*p"
In that case- The seller sold it too cheap by not doing their homework The seller was desperate for cash The market has shot up maybe due to a reunion of a band that features the instrument in question etc None of the above are the new sellers fault or give an obligation to give the bass away
It's your opinion; it's fair enough. Personally I think there's something callous about a member of this forum buying a bass on here cheap with the sole intent of selling it on at profit to someone who could have had it at the price the profiteering member did. As I just said, I was under the impression that that scenario is what the OP is talking about. It's not in what I took to be "the spirit" of this place, so I may - or may not - have had my eyes opened to the motives of some users on here. "Users" possibly being the operative word.
I think it's about proportion. If I went off to a car boot sale and picked up a pre CBS Fender Jazz Bass for £20, cleaned it up, stuck a new set of string on it and then flogged it on here for £400 would there still be a complaint because I'm making 20x what I paid for it?
I may be wrong - but I took the OP to mean just gear that was bought on here & then sold on at a huge profit shortly after, thereby denying another BCer who would have had a greater need for the bass rather than just gaining £££ his/her chance. What you describe is fair-do's, buyer beware, etc & probably one that we'd all follow.
Sorry Stu, but I think having the BC Marketplace policed by the very people who are buying and selling on it would be a total disaster... just like it has been in the real Marketplace...
I was thinking more of the moral indignation in the Ebay thread about that luthier MDP & how much he's not getting for stuff he paid sh*te-pence for the week before. All it would take would be a few "Is that the same bass you paid me less than half that for 6 months ago?", to make a possible mug think again & either decide it's still worth it or pocket their stash until something more appropriate to their needs comes along". The only ones with anything to lose in such a scenario are the flippers.
A year? That would be a good idea if you wanted to kill the BC marketplace stone dead The whole place is basically a giant swap-shop with small ammount of cash going each way.
I haven't paid that much attention to it to monitor all the sales; is it really just a micro-market of the same stuff going round in circles with the odd punter paying over the odds? Sounds like Blackburn town centre. I was in their "Crack Convertors" the other day, warming my hands on all their power tools.
lol -- Actually, if something hits you, it hits you. But we all have guilty pleasure. I'll go. Grand Funk Railroad
The first time I heard their version of "Gimme Shelter" I was blown away! It kicks seven shades of proverbial out of the original. I've made no secret of it, but received a lot of stick at the time, that I was a massive fan of Slade for many years; went to 36 of the original line-ups gigs from 73-83. Also been to around a dozen of Dave & Don's lesser version but these days it's more about meeting up with old mates & having a jar or ten than the music. When I was feeling sorry fo rmyself during my divorce I caught the Guitar Legends gig in Seville ('91??) on TV & it saved me musically. Such variety over so many days that I received an overload of musical education. ......... I was also a big fan of ............ my son's band of the 90's (they were once John Peel's band of the week & drew crowds of 400 when playing Glasgow or Edinburgh, sometimes Aberdeen) . One of their songs is still in my top 10 of favourite songs ever. I tried to keep it in check so as not to be the embarrassing Dad thing; so I just stayed being roadie, manager, promoter, agent & minder. Now what he does is more of an "acquired taste" - I believe you young 'uns call it "industrial".
Who's to say that One Direction, once they've finished with their cr*ppy little songs for 9 year old girls, won't become the next innovators in music? After all, they've had huge success and are known all over the world...
The Guardian's music "expert" (their word not mine) was quoted in The Independant as saying that history proves that Kraftwerk were more influential in music than The Beatles. Even I snorted in derision.

I thought it was, as you say, made clear in the original thread you mention. Personally I don't think it's the done thing, some don't "get" the spirit of this place & put the fast buck first; worse still are the ones who only seem to be here for that purpose & don't post anything advisory or worthwhile in other threads. In that situation I wouldn't personally buy something on here unless I wanted it for my own needs; preferring to leave ones that I fancy, but that's all, to other BCers who do have a need/GAS for it. It probably could be policed. Make a ban of reselling something on BC that was bought on BC in the previous year. It doesn't have to be a rigid ban, but would be easily policed by other BCers who would remember it being up for grabs previously.

Rock-clubs in the UK? (other countries are of interest as well)
Big_Stu replied to blackparkas's topic in General Discussion
+1 for the Robin in Bilston; gigs almost 7 nights a week, mostly rock & blues based. Great venue for crowds, I've never seen any trouble there & it's on the edge of the Black Country/B'ham based HM fans. Changing room could be better, but there are many worse. http://www.therobin.co.uk/default.asp -
Am I the only one here who thinks its a bit morbid, odd even, to remember the anniversaries of people dying?
I can understand it a bit; just another thing that folk differ about. What I don't get is posts wishing a "Happy Birthday to...." to a dead person. I mean IF there's a heaven and IF the subject is there - maybe they wouldn't want a count keeping of how many years of eternity they'd spent there?
Do not go down this route if you're looking for anything but 'clean', however. Any 'dirt' or 'grit' will have to come from outside (and will be faithfully reproduced...)
Well you can; but to get to that level of volume & playing with a band it would have to be a fairly big venue, or a HM band that handed out H&S disclaimers & ear-plugs at the door. Also, if you're used to playing only tranny heads you'd do well to swot up on valve amps. They're very picky about the speaker resistance you put into them. I had a 4x12 and a 2x15 in mine running at 16ohms each to give the amp 8. A pro player I know said to me a couple of weeks ago, "hell fire!". Then I put the bass's overdrive on...

The name of Hiwatt was bought by Music Ground a few years ago. MG began recreating Hiwatts allegedly based on a few vinatge "Hylight" models they got hold of. Problem being that most of the component manufacturers had gone out of business by then (Partridge tranformers for eg.) That is the only claim to the heritage that they have. They seem to want to sell their copies of Hiwatt Custom 200s (DR201) for around £1200, which by coincidence is what you can buy a decent Hylight original Hiwatt 200 for. The Hiwatt current HO used to be MG's Doncaster branch, the father & son team who ran MG were recently sentenced for dubious practises. They've yet to be done for the alleged forging of various classic amps based on the rebuilding of cheaper PA amps of the same manufacturers. If the OP has £1200 or thereabouts handy, he'd be well advised to hold out for an original coming available. The DR201 is a beast of a bass amp, but the maintenance of a vintage valve amp is not for the faint-hearted.
my response if hurried like that would be "sell it to the other guy then". On gumtree I once saw a bass I mildly wanted. I expressed my interest, and we discussed when we could arrange to meet. It was tuesday or wednesday, I could meet him on Thursday, or at the weekend. Thursday was going to be complicated for him at the times I could make it, so we went for Saturday. He later txted me saying he had someone coming on Friday and was offering £10 more to hold it for him. He wanted me to either show up on Thursday at a time that was inconvenient for me, or offer more for him to hold it for me till Saturday. I said he could sell it to the other guy. The advert was again active the following week.
Good call; this is exactly what I'd do. -
