1. I have a Tee shirt with UpDog on it.
2.
Conan did a video like this on his youtube aaages ago. Still a neat trick to be able to bust out
Conan ?? By Croms beard.! You mean they had the bass in ancient Cimeria ? Was a video found buried in an undergound castle, in ancient Hyborian lands ?
3. looks very nice. Coments anyone ? I know nothing of these, does anyone here own or has owned one ? 4. Thats a sad story about no pawn shop helping you. Here in the UK they will at the very least let you buy it back from them at the price they paid for it (at least thats what happened when a mates bass was stolen and he saw it in a shop a week later) As very few shops want to get on the police's wrong side. Nowerdays its all done in front of a camera for extra security (at least thats how its done in every secondhand and pawn shop i have ever been in over the last 4 or 5 years.) Again I wish you good luck in your search. ps: If i win the lottery I will pay for some 'Wise Guys' to go and politely ask the pawn shop for the information that you need.
5. So the Boss GEB7 (or similar)wouldnt be up to it, as it starts at 50Hz ?
6.
It's a deliberate mistyping of 'own', so 'pwned' means 'owned' in the sense of defeated.
Just to clarify: pwned On the qwerty keyboard the 'O' being next to the 'P' sometimes get misstyped thus. pwned instead of owned 1. The origins of "pwned" are debated but there are two possible sources: a. A prominent quake player mis spelled "owned" and the new word "pwned" was adopted by people who thought it was "1337". b. A warcraft map designer misspelled "owned" and thus people started using "pwned" instead. It hasnt been around that long. I can remember seeing it for the first time maybe 12 years ago.
7. Whats happened to link 19: Level 42 dots ? the URL link has gone sqwuiffy. Have you got Something about you - dots ?
8.
.. P, when i first started playing i struggled just like yourself.. first off why did you give up lessons? a GOOD teacher is invaluable!!! i cant stress that enough.. maybe you didnt find the right teacher.. there is nothing like the one on one.... i had piano lessons for a little while and its so important to have that close information contact.. i taught myself how to play bass and i think it shows in my theory, and i think that really thats why i wanted to play in the first place.. dont play theory catch up like im doing...if that what you want from the instrument? i usually find Youtube information to be bit by bit.. you never really find the info you want....unless Jack's suggestion might be good mind... if you dont want to go back to a teacher i recommend a book by a guy called Stephan Richter, its just called "BASS".. comes with 2 CD's.. its THE most comprehensive book ive ever come across, and ive seen lots... if youve got the time and patience its all there..
Several books on Bass by this guy, but none with 2 cds that are titled just .BASS ? Here is a stepan richter book is this the guy? thats not it though is it ?
9. How on earth do i delete my attachments to make room for others, these days ? (What happened to the wiki that explained all this ?)
10. Frankenstein ? Never heard of it. I knew a song called Monster mash in the 1970s, that was a graveyard smash.
11. Does MJW build any bass amps ?
12.
Hi Guys So I've decided on the amp I'm going for; considering it was strongly recommended here, and I tried it out for myself, I went for the Marshall MB15, so that's ordered and on it's way in the post! Still deliberating about the bass, but I'm close to reaching a decision. Just a few quick questions about accessories. These are probably really obvious beginner's questions but they have to be asked! 1. Can I buy just any old guitar lead, or are there specialist ones just for basses? Any particular ones you would recommend? 2. I'm probably going to be playing with a plectrum a bit, so I was just going to order some heavy-gauge picks online. Will these do the trick or again, do you have to get specialist ones for bass? Any recommendations for any particular brands? Cheers
This guy is from this Forum , using the nickname obbm he has made many of us here high quality hand soldered cables for a good price. The main thing is he can make you whatever type of jack and whatever type of lead, at whatever length you specify. (whatever!) I have bought a few cables from him and both are still going strong. I dont know him to speak to, however usually when he is mentioned he gets dozens of people saying how good his stuff is, so he must be pretty ok at what he does. As far as plectrums are concerned. Whatever floats your boat.!? Try them all There are a few supposedly made for just bass like the Gibson Heavy, which is a bit bigger than yer average guitard pick. but really just buy* a handfull and try them all. ( I usually use a pick myself, but sometimes only fingers can give me the tone i feel i need) *PS: If you buy a bass from a shop. Make sure that a hand full of free plectrums to take home, is mentioned before you part with any money.
13. I have the LH 500 and with good speakers it is extremely loud!. I too, liked the look of the HA 350 with the bespoke case, and almost bought one, But for £100 more i could get a brand new LH 500, so i went with that.
14.
Alternative to the squires is the Westfield P bass copies. You can pick them up for peanuts - about £100 new. I just got one from Crackconverters 2nd hand for £40!! They are good basses, Precision shaped and sounding (Monsieur Burnell used Precisions) and would leave you more of a budget for an amp. A cruddy amp can make a decent bass sound pants.
Westfield P bass was the first bass i owned, I fell on my feet there. Only £80 inluding postage from ebay. Good bass not just for the money. For the money you will not do better thats for sure. PS: the fact that Squire bass are made in China is irrelevant. The Grand Reward factory make basses for all sorts of big name bass 'manufactures' they know what they are doing. These days 'Made in China' means not cheap tat, it means that if you want a handmade £3000 bass you get one just as good as anywhere else, or if you want a £300 bass you get a very good bass indeed. If you want a $50 plank then you can get one of those as well. I would put my Chinese CV Squier up against any north American Fender. Along with my Chinese made Farida P bass and Jazz bases.
15. Well appart from one string too many, its a very fine bass indeed. I hate seing pictures of lovely basses that i will probably never own due to their horrendous price though. ps: interesting videos at the foot of the page.
16. Why should writing songs on a bass be any different than on a guitar or keyboard ? You can obviously wite your own parts, but writing guitar parts is not a bother, if you just envisage them being played an octave or two higher. As Flea famously said "The bass is the ultimate party instrument" I'd go one further, Id say the bass was the ultimate song composing instrument. But then i am biased
17.
Yeah, I know that it's miles out of my price range, I was merely quoting it as an example of a look and feel that was good (having had a quick noodle on a friend's). Sorry, could you explain to me what a 'combo' is? I know next to nothing about amps. Sorry for the relentless questions, but I'd rather get some impartial advice here than from a salesman in a music shop somewhere! Would you definitely recommend buying used rather than new? I must admit I'd not considered the possibility of buying second hand yet, but I think I'll look into it now. I'll also look up the Yamaha BB414- £150 seems quite cheap though, I'm willing to spend a bit more than that to get something better. [s]I had a look on my local music store's website, the only squier p-bass I could find was this one: http://www.dawsons.c...k-olympic-white, is that the same one you're talking about?[/s] In any case what you're describing sounds like the best option for me so far. [s][Edit: I also found this bass: http://www.dawsons.c...telecaster-bass, is this the one?][/s] [Edit Again: I found the one you mean; it looks good] The MB15 also sounds like a good amp for the price. If I was willing to stretch to £100 for the amp though would I be able to get anything considerably better? Also could you explain what a 'valve amp' and 'gain' are? Once again, sorry for all the questions, and thanks for all the assistance. You guys are a real help, especially for a novice like me! It's good to have some advice to help me make sense of it all.
Yes that Squier Vintage Modified P Bass from Dawsons would be fine as a starter bass, or not just a starter bass. I wouldnt worry about Valve amps at the moment unless you happen to come accross some fantastic bargain. I see the link you used was from Dawsons ? Are you near a branch ? They are pretty good at letting you try out a few before you buy. I have a local branch in Chester, and have bought a few bass from there. The adantage of buying the Squier vintage modified P bass is that you'd get it from new and still have well over £100 left to get a small combo. But as ever go and see how it feels. Especialy the difference between a P bass and a J bass.
18. Youd struggle to get a Stingray / Cab for anything like what your prepared to spend. That said its still possible to get a great sound for not much money if you take your time to soak up a bit of knowledge from here before jumping in. The Squier Classic Vibe P bass are about £320 new from GAK here Or you could pick one up for maybe £200 - £250 in good condition from someone here. These have a very good reputation as a great bass, not just a beginer bass. As its a classic P bass in the Fender style your sound wouldnt be a million miles from the JJ burnell growl. Go to a music shop and pick up both a P bass and a J bass and see how the neck feels, the P bass is a few mm thicker. No problem for most people unless they have small hands. (like me) As for other makes. Yamahas are also almost always well made, even the entry level ones.. So far as sound is concerned. A combo would be best for the money you'd have left, there are always plenty knocking about. Get one with a headphone socket, so you can practice in quiet. Possibly a Laney.
19. Just pretend to tune down a semi and see if they notice.
20. the two left hand pics of body and neck are not working, '404 not found'
21. I just happened to come across a transcription of the 10cc song, Dreadlock Holiday, released in 1978. Even in notation I recognized the famous intro straight away. I was however puzzled by the rest of it, so purely because it was a boring Sunday morning I went and found the album and looked up the tabs and played it through headphones whilst reading through the tabs to see if what was written seemed to be correct. The tabs did appear to be correct, but that was by now irrelevant, as i was entranced by the wonderful quirky bubbly bass lines throughout the song. Simply addictive to play and even I leaned the song in half an hour (and have been playing it ever since) So I thought it was selfish of me not to share it with my fellow Basschatters who may not know it, or those like me who may just not have listened to it properly before. I recommend a good quality recording and a decent Hi -Fi or headphones to really appreciate the way the bass line bubbles along through the song, often fitting the words perfectly. Here is the transcription the tabs and a link to a youtube video, though if you have it on cd i recomend that on a good set of speakers or headphones. tabs: http://www.ultimate-...72/?transpose=0 notation: or go here for notation and music on one page: http://www.basslesso...ptions.php?i=29 and finaly here is the song from youtube

23. (IF body and neck are Fender) That seems a reasonable price for what it is. However............ Trouble is Fender make so many models that you never know unless you can actually take it appart. More importantly have a play on it. If it rocks your socks then it dosent matter what it is priced at, or what parts are made by whoever. You just have to ask yourself, do you want to pay the price to own and play the bass. I have seen several basses on here that people were convinced were not Fender only to see them selves proved wrong, and vice verser. The fact that you cant go and see it is probably a deal breaker.
